What do STAR scores mean?
STAR, which stands for Standardized Testing And Reporting, is California's statewide testing program. The results shown here are from the tests that students took in spring 2004, including the California Achievement Test, Sixth Edition (CAT/6), and tests in English language arts and math based on California state standards. The STAR program also includes a writing assessment and tests in science and social studies.

The STAR tests are used to calculate the Academic Performance Index (API), the state's main measure of school quality, which is announced in January. The 2004 Base API number will include the results of the CAT/6 and the California Standards Tests.
