Our experience with Fort Riley Middle School was disappointing. There is a distinct lack of academic rigor - with virtually zero homework assigned. Work that is assigned outside of class can generally be completed by students during the school day. My student was simply bored on the vast majority of the days. Moreover, many of the teachers and the current administrators do not partner in a meaningful way with parents to generate a healthy home-school relationship. On one occasion, we were actually forbidden from meeting with a teacher to discuss ways to partner for an issue our student was having. I am taking my issues to the school board. I recommend enrolling your students in adjacent middle schools if you are moving to Fort Riley, Kansas.
My daughter attended FRMS for three years and walked out of the building a well rounded young lady. Her teachers were caring, understanding and had high expectations for her academic performance. Her gifted teacher did an awesome job preparing her for high school advance english. I especially liked the Parent Portal and the instant access to her grades and assignments. KT
This is a great scholl great nice freindly teacher and as a whole is a safe fun place to go to school I would not change it for the world
Staff are Awesome. Mainly, Mrs. Hertel is the best in the world. A big help for anyone who wants to do anything in the school. A+ Mrs. Hertel!
If you are thinking about putting your child into this school don't. As a military parents of 17 years and many excellent schools, this is the WORST one we have ever encountered. My son who has HADDS has gone from kinder to 6th a straight A student we moved to FT. Riley and his 7th and 8th grade has been the worst nightmare of his and our lifes. His grades are all failing and he might have to resit the 8th grade. It is certainly not because he isn't bright and it isn't because we haven't tried to contact the teachers and work things out. There are a few special caring teachers there but not a lot. The principal is aweful and couldn't care less as for the counselor, don't even bother asking to talk to one of them they don't care either. My son is miserable and lost. Not good
This school has been awful. My son's grades have slipped. I have tried numerous times to contact the teachers, only one out of six returns my calls. I tried to contact the principal, and was not helped much. The guidance counselor has also been unavailable to help my son despite my direct request. My son is expected to have too much responsibility, he cannot maintain this level and is given no assistance despite my requests. This school is awful for a child that needs some extra help every now and then!
Ft Riley Middle School is a great school for most children. The teachers are approachable and express a sincere desire to instruct well. Its test results and support among parents are a testiment to overall success. We experienced an administration resistant to providing the strongest achievers with more personalized instruction. Our child achieved straight A grades, but constantly complained about being bored and nearly always completed homework assignments prior to the end of the school day. We are taking our child elsewhere next year.
My three children have attended Ft. Riley Middle school over the past 5 years. They have had the opportunity to be apart of a wonderfully diverse educational experience. The teachers are highly quilified and take their time to really understand the students. The staff provides consistant feedback on student performance which helps us to keep up on our kids education. The school has extra curricular activities my kids took advantage of too; band, music, sports, student senate and National Jr. Honor Society. Ft. Riley Middle School has been a wonderful experience for our family. Our kids have gone to high school tatally prepared for the experience. Thank you Ft. Riley Middle School Staff. TKM
Fort Riley Middle School has been a great asset in my childs educational experience who has aspergers syndrome disorder. He not only learns academically but they also focus on his goals (social, organizational, transitional, and communication skills) in every class. Communication with staff has been excellent, whether it be basic questions, clarifications, or academic status through emails, phone, in person, or conferences. I have always received a quick response back, which is important to parents. If my child ever has a problem they find a solution (one that will work for my son). My son has a very dedicated team who gives him just the right amount of support. My son has had a great experience at this school. Teachers have taken time to understand who my son is and brought the best qualities out of in my son. They really make students and parents feel welcome.
This school was wonderful! The teachers truly care about their students. They understand the issues military children face and do all they can to alleviate their problems. I wish my child could finish out here but unfortunately we are PCS'ing. But for anyone coming I say you will be happy to have your child here.
As a military parent, I am always concerned about the schools my children will attend while moving throughout the country. Fort Riley Middle School is a great middle school. The teachers are dedicated, willing to work with block leaves, and keep parents like me informed. When I was stationed in Iraq, my son's teachers continued to keep me informed of his progress. His teacher from Team 9 even took the time to video tape his performance of a song he wrote and mailed it to me. Does the school have problems? Of course, what school doesn't. But it's the wonderful things that teachers do for our kids and our families that often gets overlooked. If you happen to get stationed at Fort Riley, I hope your children have the privelage of attending FRMS.
I think that Fort Riley Middle School is a very excellant school. They seem to be well kept and if anything happens all the teachers are aware of it and they go farther then expected to help students pass.
I was shocked to read the other parent's experiences with this school. I'm a former educator who moved to the area, enrolled my children (3)in the school, and was blown away by the professionalism and curriculum of the well-qualified and educated staff, the courteous demeanor of everyone in the building, and a wide range of activities for kids. Racism is a national problem, not just an isolated problem in this school. Obviously the teacher spoken about didn't handle the situation well...but in my experience, for every one time something is mishandled by a teacher or administrator, there are 99 times when it is handled superbly. This middle school has the same social issues that every school in America has...but they work extremely hard to combat the problems young people face. This middle school is one of the five best I have ever observed in the country.
If you are looking for a school with a top rate band department, this is it. The band staff is excellent with instructors that have a great ear and an eye for natural talent or at the very least a talent that can be developed. If you are looking for quality academics, look elsewhere. The school has serious racial issues and discrimination. My child complained about a student using nonstop racial slurrs and was told a teacher didn't hear it so so they couldn't do anything. An outright lie, the teacher encouraged it. Parents are ignored every time they try to be a part of things. They did not even present any of the material during the school year that would be on the standardized test for science, so many kids failed that part, it still goes on the students permanent record without reference to the lack of presentation. Avoid this School!
This school is a disapointment, from the principal to the rest of the staff, we were shocked to see how racist they are, to the point to tell my kids not to speack their native language, the kids have no felling of safety in that school, I was thankful tha day we move from Fort Riley.
I was not impressed! The faculty seem to dismiss parents. Their rules are intentionally vague, as if to set the student up to fail. They lack the ablity to show concern for a parent's or student's opinions and feelings. My daughter(an A student her whole life) attended this school and from day one wasn't able to please the staff. She was even sent to the office for having hiccups! Almost daily you can step into the school and find a parent standing at the front desk to complain about how their child is being treated.
