This school has a great faculty that cares about every individual student at the school. In my 3 and a half years so far at this school, whenever I have needed help, I have been able to go to any of my teachers and they offered me whatever help I needed. Although the facilities of the district are greatly lacking, the board of education and faculty of this school really do have the student's best interests at heart. These teachers should be honored and respected for all of the work that they do. As a senior at Herington High School, I thank all of them greatly for helping me through the entire duration of my schooling.
I agree with the other one star folks. The school has too many teachers that do not take their jobs seriously or have been able to get by doing the minimum. They need to raise their standards and push the students in a positive way instead of negative. The Administration seems to not be concerned about any of the issues at hand. Their concerns seem to be all about appearance instead of really making a difference in the community. I think more positiveness and kindness and understanding is what this school needs but it has been so long that it will not change overnight and you cannot blame folks for moving on to do better for their families.
In order for a school to thrive, it takes an entire community. Herington has a lot of great teachers that are working very hard to make sure that the students are given the tools they need in order to be successful in life, but they can't do it all alone. Look at the students with high absentee numbers and compare THAT with their test scores. I'm sure the blame wouldn't be only on the teachers if you do so. I set high, achievable standards for my children. They rarely miss school, they do their homework, they keep on top of their grades and THEY LEARN. I have seen great things happening in this school over the past couple of years, and I look forward to seeing many more great things in the future.
I give Herington High one star only because I don't have the option to give half a star. Herington does have a handful of teachers that do very well, but the majoritiy of them, in my opinion, have stopped caring. This should be obvious by our test scores compared to the state average. Something has got to be done to improve the way things are done. Several teachers and other faculty should be put on a probation period until things improve, even if they are tenured. I know that the bond for a new school is coming up for a vote, but until more changes are made to the academic structure, a new building won't make any difference.
My kids have had great teachers who go the extra mile with them. They are available for help whenever needed, they truly care about the kids. I recommend Herington schools to everyone. They also are up to date with technology and the kids have great access to many things the smaller schools around here do not have.
Herington High School has too many teachers that don't seem to take their responsibility seriously.
