this school has really changed since 2004. . . if you are going by the rating on this site, you will be sadly mistaken. . . this year, we have received gold in Reading, Science, and Math. We are currently the highest ranked elementary school in the district and consistently post the highest checkpoint scores in the whole of USD 500. We have received numerous awards from the state of Kansas, including the governor, for our high test scores. . . in 2006, Mr. Jones, our then principal, got rid of the teachers who were ineffective and only taught using worksheets. These people were disgruntled (check the dates on the bad ratings, these were probably submitted by these same people!).
Mr. Jones is an excellent principal and I wish him the best and pray that he continues in his efforts to help W.A.W in the journey to excellence. However, if parental involvement and test scores are low, nothing the state will ever implement will work until parents recognize their power and responsibility in their childs education. Increased parental involvement will bring the extracurricular activities some are looking for it should also increase our students test scores.
This school has gone so far downhill that it's barely recognizable. So many teachers have left that 75% of the staff is new. Academic programs are falling apart and they don't even have a student resource team, let alone extracurricular activities.
This school has a new principal who is one of the best I have ever worked with. Mr. Michael Jones visits all the classrooms, plays football at recess, sweeps in the cafeteria, gives pizza parties to the classrooms, dinners for parents and trophys for the honor roll. Mr. Jones is one in a million. We need more principals like this man! He is definitely involved with his students and staff. He arrives early and stays late every day.
