My child goes to Whitson and we've been impressed with the teachers, the administration, and how everyone goes out of their way to ensure a child's success. Our child has some developmental delays due to medical issues, and they quickly identified that and developed an IEP specifically to address that and help us be successful. Additionally, we are part of the dual language program and we find it incredibly impressive.
Whitson is an excellent public school. Principal, administration, and teachers are very committed to excellence and challenging students. We transferred into Whitson and feel very blessed that we had this option. The school seems like a large family, everyone is open and very diverse. The PTO and school work very well together, working for best solution for school and students. There are lots of activities for kids to get involved in such as Spelling Bee, Math Bee, Geography Bee, Dance Club, and Running Club just to name a few. My daughter says this is the best school she has attended and she has been in a catholic school as well as another 501 School. Whitson Rocks! I'm sorry she will be moving on to middle school, but I can hope we have the same type of experience! More schools should be modeled after Whitson, and all parents should be involved in their child s education.
We have 6 children, 4 who attend Whitson currently and 2 more that will attend in the next few years. We absolutely LOVE this school. The principal is incredible! She is very approachable and listens to parents' concerns. The teachers are also amazing. They really care about the students and work well with them, as well as with the parents. Parents are welcomed in the school to help in classrooms, or participate in various capacities on school committees. We couldn't have picked a better, more caring enviroment for our children to attend school in,
Three of my children have attended Whitson. As far as Topeka public schools go, it is one of the better ones. Very diverse population which we liked. No art program and no science really. Like all public schools, the year seems to be geared toward doing well on state testing. Lots of good young teachers at this school along with a few excellent veterans whose experience is much appreciated. We've had children through Whitson over a period of 8 years and have not had a problem with bullying. Not many extracurricular activities. No highly academic programs like math olympiad or jr great books or chess club. More geared toward kids with problems.
