I went to Wathena all my life, and I have to say I am a much happier person now that I am gone. There are certain unspoken rules and regulations about that town. Girls dress nice. You must be an athlete. You must be white. You cannot be yourself. Your family has to be perfect. I was harrassed and teased from the moment I walked into those walls. Every day was spent counting down the hours until I graduated. It only got worse the last few months of my senior year when I came out gay. The whole community is self-absorbed and predjudice against anything different. If you want your children to have an Old Fashion upbringing, take them here. Just know that if you or your children ever step a to out of line, you will have a horde of monsters gearing to tear you to shreds.
This place is a prison way too many regulations and unnecessary rules. However the college prep is extremely useful as it is a very serious topic for the administration to project towards the students.
Wathena School is the best school ever! The teachers are amazing! I have always lived here and I love it. The teachers are amazing. I have gone to school here all my life and am on the Honor Roll. I am currently on the volleyball, basketball, track, softball, and on the knowledge bowl team. If you come here you can do anything and everything. So come here and if you are an athlete, an actor, a brain, or even someone else this school is great.
We moved here in the middle of my oldest sons 6th grade year, the teachers, and students for that matter, welcomed my kids with open arms. Dont get me wrong, there are cliches in Wathena like anywhere else, but this school has turned my teenager completely around. I recommend a small school to anyone.
I agree witht he former student. If you are an athlete you fit in, but you also have to be an athlete with a name. If your family is a no body you will not get very far. My son would rather go to another school.
I am a Wathena High graduate and I have to admit that an athlete will fit in better in this school. But if you are not an athlete, like myself, you will also have a great time. My entire family and my husband's have gone to Wathena and we have all had an excellent life afterwards. Even in college I have not found better teachers than in my experiences in Wathena. Wathena may be a small town school, but it has the same good experiences as a bigger school without all the bad experiences that you get with the bigger schools. I would rate my experience at Wathena High School as better than I would have had if I went to a different school.
Our entire immediate family has been educated at USD #406. Several of us have gone on to college and have been thankful for our Wathena Educational System. We left high school very prepared for college life and life in general. We would highly recommend the school to future students. The teachers are very caring and professional. The administrators are fair and professional. With each passing year, the education that the students receive continues to improve. Thanks to the hiring of highly qualified staff. Wathena (USD #406) is a great place for any student to attend!
I am a former student of this school and this is school has no culture. It is all white, and the students are one of a kind. I moved there later in life and it was horrible. Some of the teachers are great and very inspirational, but there are a few I worry about. I have better grades at the university I attend now than I ever did in high school, and it is much harder. Lets put it this way, if you as a parent are some one big in town- faculty or maybe a board member, your child will have it good from beginning to end or because this school is completely based around sports, if your son or daughter are great at sports they will have no problem. Other than that it will be hell for your children. This is not just me, its is my parent as well!
Wathena school has some of the best trained teachers I've ever seen. I most definitely request this school for your child. My daughter's scores raised from Troy school, when I transferred her to Wathena.
