I strongly disagree with Jesse about the extra curricular aspects of Jenkins High. Teresa Bentley was tough as nails on our b-ball team in 97' , but we always knew she cared about not only our physical talents, but our scholastic even more. Some of the best and most rememberable moments of my life was at Jenkins Ind. High School...
I work in this school district. The staff that works in this district care about the children and work hard, but the administration is the biggest joke I have ever met in my entire life. The preach professionalism yet they are the most unprofessional group of people I have ever met in my life. This school district is in severe threat of shutting down or having the state assistance. The superintendent and director of special ed conjure up multiple ideas and try to implement them all at one time, not giving any of them time to see if they actually work or not. Punishment is inconsistent because of no principal. You have up to 7 individuals trying to run a school, all with different ideas on instruction, discipline, etc. It's a nightmare. This school might have a fighting chance but not until they get rid of the superintendent and director of special ed.
I went to Jenkins and graduated from there in 2006. I do not believe Jenkins is a bad school. However, to get the grades you deserve you have to earn it. I worked hard every day in high school I was disappointed with a 94 and I hardly ever got lower than a 96 in most classes. No Jenkins is not some major Lexington school with the best resources in the world, however, I was accepted to the University of KY and I am about to graduate from there with a 3.9. Jenkins Middle High School is an adequate school, if it was not it wouldn't be open. Jenkins prepared me for college, but I did have to work at it. College isn't easy for anyone... if you're not willing to buckle down and study, you're not going to get the grades you desire.
I go to Jenkins currently. And I really have no problem there. The education I receive is pretty good. Smaller classes help a lot, they have a better student teacher ratio. We have one of the best history teachers in the state Mr Brian Breeding. We have huge extra-curricular support. I would recommend my school to anyone who wants a small town atmosphere and a very caring school.
I read the previous review of Ms. Elkins and I would adamantly disagree with her statement of not being involved. With this being a small community school, everyone is involved. Jenkins his not a magnet high school or a private intitution of high, but it is a great place for students to go and get a sound education and good structure. I think that if you are wanting your child to get individual attention without a bunch of BS, send them to Jenkins. Now the athletics a JHS aren't very good, but they do compete...
I graduated from jenkins in 2003, and I would not recommend it to anyone. I was not prepared for college at all, and my ACT score of 25composite was because I studied alone. There is no support for extra-curricular activities, very little parent or teacher involvement, and only a handful of the teachers made me feel that they actually cared if we graduated or not. The classes available to me were so limited that I didn't get to choose them- they were chosen for me; I just picked the times. One teacher changed and saved my life, and I felt the others resented her for it and for her excellence. The best teachers I had are no longer there. Please don't subject your kids to this. Thank you.
