The teachers and staff at Saffell are absolutely the best. I am very sad that my daughter will be switching schools due to the redistricting process. I have nothing but wonderful things to say about Saffell Street Elementary.
My children have all been happy with their teachers and love school! I now have 1 at high, 1 at middle, 3 at Saffell Street. They all love it, and are learning wonderfully. The grades they are getting are outstanding. I can't say enough about Mr. Shouse and the staff at this school, they remember when my twins were born and I would walk to the school to pick up my other children. Now they are in the 1st grade and Mr. Shouse walked up to us at the 1st grade night and shook the boys' hands, and told them he remembered them from long ago. (with a smile) My boys loved that and asked later if it was true, I quickly told told them yes. It shows that they do pay attention and my children have flourished because of the staff and Mr. Shouse!
My son has attend Saffell St. for the past 6 years. He has ADD, and has had many struggles. I have found that the teachers, councilors, and the principal, Mr. Shouse, to be most helpful, and caring when dealing with these problems. I receive phone calls, notes and requests for meetings when they have an idea that may help, or a concern. It was my son's first grade teacher that helped me realize he had ADD, and gave me the direction I needed to get him help. I am grateful that we moved here, and that my son got to attend this school of dedicated professionals.
I have one child at Saffell right now but eventually will have three there. I love this school. There is no other school that even comes close to Saffell in my opinion. I would not have my children attend any elementary school in this county other than this school. The Principal is very involved with what goes on here. He knows exactly which child is which and who they belong to. He knows majority of these kids by name. First graders being an exception of course. The teachers at this school are really fabulous. They are all very different with very different techniques in teaching. It is up to the parents and teachers to decide which classroom techniques work best for each individual child. If there is a problem , the teachers and principal work to make sure it is resolved very quickly. I don't believe that there is any school better!!
My two children attended this school. With the exception of my son's 4th grade year, my children enjoyed every day. My children are now in middle and high school and they are both straight 'A' students with scores of proficient and distinguished on their portfolios and test scores. I believe education starts at home with dedication to hard work and effort. Children learn what they live and live what they learn. I was very surprised by the previous review. There may have been a few times when my child and I were unsure of what needed to be done but a simple phone call to the teacher usually solved the problem. Teachers are not out to see children fail. Their success is measured by your child's success. I was very sad to see my children leave for the big school but Saffell St. prepared them well.
I would like to say that although I enjoy the atmosphere at Saffell Street School, I have a problem with lack of instruction my child is receiving. He has needed special help since age 2 and still needs that help. Homework assignments are difficult because no direction or instruction accompanies the majority of work that comes home, leaving me, the parent, lost as to what is expected or needed. I have been out of school for some time and I need refreshing on some subjects, especially math, to understand the problem solving, but, that is not available from the class teacher assigning the work. If I'm expected to teach at home, I need tools, directions, instructions, something to help me stay on track with classroom activity. Am I the only parent with this concern? I think not. Are you certain the teacher is aware of the needs of each child?
