The de Paul School is specifically designed for students with learning differences, including attention and organization issues. All of their teachers are trained in techniques to keep students focused and learning. They have an approach called "MAPS for Success" that guides the lessons in all subjects: instruction that is Multisensory, Attention-based, Practice rich, and Structured. Teachers do not blame their students for being distractible or impulsive; instead of calling parents to complain, they call to tell them what they are doing to help their children to overcome these issues. All aspects of their program -- from curriculum to class size to learning goals -- are designed to address the needs of students with dyslexia, dysgraphia, discalculia, and other learning differences. Most importantly, the learning goals are kept high, rather than watering down content and expecting less. Their ultimate goal is to prepare students to be independent in high school and college!
The teachers at this school are amazing. They know how to deal with students who learn differently and they work with each student individually to achieve success. The student/teacher ratio is very low and they emphasize self-esteem and success. The school has done wonders for my granddaughter. A truly amazing school and worth every penny.
My daughter started the 4th grade at de Paul in November 2010. We went from spending 2.5 hours every night doing one-on-one homework with her, to about an hour of homework (which included her reading time) that she completed on her own. Their philosophy is that the student should be doing the homework independently so that their teacher can see what they mastered and what needs more instruction. Projects are done at school (they don't want to see how great a project the parents can do, they want to see what the kids can do). Teachers challenge the kids, but in a way that doesn't make them feel like failures. The kids are great too, amazingly helpful to one another. This is the perfect environment for kids who learn differently.....although expensive, we'll figure out the finances somehow to ensure our daughter can continue to thrive.
We are new to DePaul and we love it! My son is six and he went from crying every day, at his old school, to jumping out of the car to get to class. He feels so confident and 'safe'. The teachers are kind & loving and inspire the kids to want to learn. I can not say enough. No more tears for mom and child! They challenge the kids in such creative ways that they love school! Yeah!!! Thanks DePaul for rescuing our family!
This school is nothing but a success. I have children who attend and we have had nothing but improvement and restoration of our self confidence that it is wonderful. The Academic program is on[e] that every school system should incorporate because all children do not learn the same and many need some structure. Parent involvement is there and not limited but could be more as well. Sport activities are there and are limited which this is new to the school.
If your child has dyslexia, hyperactivity, or a similar learning difference, this is the Best place in the World! I will have 3 children there in the 2003-2004 school year. My youngest started school there last year after I was told for the 2nd year in a row he wasn't ready for Kindergarten (at age 6.) He went from recognizing only 16 letters to reading books from the school library with a small vocabulary in only 3 months. He also loves school. Children are taught how to work with and around their specific learning differences so they can function in a 'normal' classroom. Speaking as a mother of 4 hyperactive dyslexics, if you have the chance, send your child to de Paul. It will save your child's educational career as well as their self-esteem!
