I love this school. My daughter transferred schools two years ago when we bought a house that was out of district from her previous school Norton Elementary. I was extremely nervous sending her to a new school and making her start fresh in an all new atmosphere. We were pleasantly surprised when her first day she said she already loved it. Her teacher Miss Morgan is amazing. She is very approachable to the kids and works hard to keep them on track. She keeps us informed on what they are learning in class. The librarian also recommended our daughter into some art classes on Saturdays after seeing her sketches. She has grown so much since arriving at Shacklette. We are so pleased with this school and feel it was by far the best choice for our daughter.
I attended shacklette for four years and i feel like it is a terrible school. Going into middle school i struggled because shacklette taught me nothing. I had great teachers but the curriculam was terrible. There is alot of bullying and favoritism and some of the subs are ridiculous. do not put your kid in this school.
We just recently moved from a small town in Michigan and I was very concerned with what school my 1st grader would end up at. Initially, they tried sending her to a school over an hour bus ride when we could see Shacklette's doors from our new house. Luckily, a transfer request was granted and she was able to attend Shacklette. I couldn't have been more pleased with ALL staff! They truly made us feel welcome & provided a smooth transition for my child. Her teacher regognized her academic achievements right away & work on enhancing them. I don't feel they are at a level academically compared to where we came from, however I get the feeling that is JCPS? No matter which school your children attend... It takes special teachers & parent involvement to reach your child's full potential. PROS: staff recognized me by name over the phone and in person, parents can attend the classroom at any time, lunch with your child is encouraged & we took full advantage, many family activity nights, wonderful library!! CONS: play equipment almost non-existent, little focus on PE
Shacklette is a terrible school. My daughter attended Kindergarten there 2 years ago and had Mrs. Freemon (who was WONDERFUL) for about half the year until she took a permanent maternity leave and the horrible permanent sub came in and the nightmares began. My daughter went from getting green everyday to warnings everyday, the last straw for me was when my 5 year old daughter had to sit and watch everybody eat snack in front of her because she talked in class :( she was told by the sub "you are not getting snack" On top of all that there is a younger male teacher there who is constantly yelling in a really mean tone at his class. My daughter NEVER had a field trip or Christmas program here. Shacklette used to be a GREAT school, not sure what happened? It's a shame the south end's schools have all went downhill.
I just had a confrence with the new principal at Shacklette. She is young and ready to give new leadership to the teacher and staff at Shacklette, so that they can help the students have a better education. I think the change is Great!!!!!!
i love shaclette BUT there awards programs are gone, mst program didnt even hear about it this year school seems like its goin backwards instead of forward what are these leaders thinking????
The principal Ms. Keith is awesome and my son absolutely loves the In-house MST program. I gave Shacklette a chance and I don't see the problems talked about in these reviews. Ms. Keith is always there when I have a question or concern. The teachers are very hard workers and really care about the kids.
I have had 3 children attending Shacklette. The principal Ms. Keith has been an invaluable source of help regarding my children. I had 2 special needs children attend the school. I was not always happy with what was going in in the classroom. Ms. Keith always made time to meet with me on short notice and she addressed my concerns promptly. I am not exactly sure why the negative comments have been posted about this principal. I have seen nothing but growth since she came to the school. I am a very involved parent. I am the chairperson of the board of the advisory council for the family resourse center. I encourage parents to schedule a meeting with the principal. Get to know her for yourself.
I also have a child attending Shacklette and I have to say that I am not really impressed with what I have seen. I feel as does a lot of other that Shacklette needs new management. And after reading the test scores of these kids, I feel that it is not the childern but the ones leading them. They are lost from the beginning, how sad. And my question is who will help make the changes needed in this school needs? I can see Shacklettes doors from my home but if things don't change I will be moving my child to a new school!
I totally disagree with all of these ratings. I think Shacklette has a great leader and a very supportive staff. Everything Mrs. Keith does at Shacklette is for the benefit of the students. Because of her our students now have an In-house MST program, more extracurricular activities, and family nights. Not to mention the building expansion! All of this, I think, is for the benefit of each child's education. I have never once doubted my decision to send my child to Shacklette. I am dissapointed in the negative comments made about Shacklette and its leadership. I have never felt unwelcomed by anyone at the school. Parents and school staff should work together, in order for the child to have a positive learning experience. What kind of message does it send when you speak so negatively about someone or something? Try to look for the good in all things!
Excellent school. I think the princial cares about the kids. Teachers are new but are wonderful and creative. My children love going to school there and I am satisfied with my chidren's education.
I agree with the reviews that talk about how this school has went down hill every since Mrs.Keith has became the principal. She is suppose to be a good role model for the children but doesnt do it.My children have been going to Shacklette since 1st grade and you can really see a change thru out the years and its for the worse.I think there needs to be a NEW LEADER so that there would not be so many turnovers for teachers and students.I hope someone will read all of these bad reviews from the parents and do something about it.Because its only getting worse not better every year!!!They principal makes alot of parents feel very unwelcomed too!
I am also a parent of a child that attends Shacklette. And I am seriously thinking of removing my child from this school as well. I have a 4th grader that might have to adjust to a new school, new classmates, new teacher, new routine. Just because of how Shacklette is ran. People say parents should get more involved. Well in my experience theres no use getting involved with this school. They make you feel unwelcome, they make it seem like you are hassle when you step foot in the door. Anytime you try to talk to the principal, nothing gets done. I have seen and heard numurous reports of bullies, fights, and favoritism. But nothing is ever done about it. No wonder all the good staff members has left. No wonder parents are sending their children to other schools. Something needs to be done. Now the question is, who is going to do something about this? Someone needs to do their job here! If not the principal then who?
I am currently a parent of a child at this school and every year I have given it a chance. I truely regret not taking my child out of this school three years ago. I have endured too many upsetting incidents in the past five years. I am now removing my child from this school and truely agree with the other reveiws that point their finger in the direction of the principlal. The dishonesty is very strong. I can't stress enough about the dishonesty.
I have had several children attend Shacklette Elementary. It use to be a good school. Since 2003 I have seen great teachers, many that have been there for years, flee the school and the current principal in a mass exit. I am at the school for all activities and have witnessed very upsetting things. I have seen teachers insulted and humiliated in front of parents and students by the principal. The recent Christmas program was a disaster. Students were told they would perform. They and their teachers practiced hard for thier moment in the spotlight. On the day they were to perform for parents and the school, the principal refused to let them perform. These students were crushed and will never be able to make up this missed opportunity. The teachers at Shacklette are great and work hard to have my children do well in school. I commend them for their hard work in a school that is ran so poorly by the current leadership.
Shacklette use to be a wonderful school until the present principal took over. The former principal wasn't the greatest but at least she was friendly and not so hard to talk to. It seems to be that all this principal cares about are the test scores and all that is taught at Shacklette are the tested subjects. I know this is a problem at a lot of schools but I have friends that have children at other schools and it is not as bad at those schools. Lucky my last child was a 5th grader last year and she had a wonderful group of teachers who all left at the end of last year. They just couldn't take the principal anymore and the staff turn around. I saw that 10-15 staff members left every year because of the principal. I'm glad my children are in other schools now.
Parents need to be involved, I lot of things happen there that behind closed doors. They do nothing as far as discipline. The staff is great but the principal is not friendly and not easy to talk to.
I think parents need to be very involved at Shacklette. A lot goes on behind closed doors. The teachers are great and work very hard, but they are all fairly new. They do not have support from the administration especially on discipline. Parents need to be concerned about the discipline situation at Shacklette. As new leadership takes over people do leave, but what does that say when it is still happening after 6 years? Check out the history of the test scores also. Make sure this is the environment you want your children to spend their days in.
I agree with aug 8th parent. My daughter loves it there ,but she has had some wonderful teachers. The principle is not so frendily. But the teachers make up for it. Also my daughter loves the MST program its wonderful.
This is my daughters second year here and so far I have been very satisfied. Reading some of these other reviews scared me a little but I haven't seen any of the things they talk about. Getting a new principal can cause lots of changes and staff members to leave who don't like new ways, this is normal. But sometimes it takes a little time and changes to get things under control. Their test scores are not the best but my daughter learned so much last year and is above where she needs to be, that should say something. So I faith I will continue to be as satisfied as I am today. Thank you and I hope this helps anyone who is thinking of Shacklette as their school.
