I have had 2 children go through elementary school at Lowe. While they are both very successful academically, partly because of the education they have received there, there are a few things to know while considering Lowe for your child. There is a group of parents that has a sense of entitlement for themselves and their children, which this principal readily feeds. There is a bit of political play. We have had some wonderful teachers, but they are very limited in this atmosphere. I have seen this school lose at least 2 amazing teachers because of it. While the student population has some diversity, the viewpoints of these students don't seem to. One of my children has been bullied, called names, and ostracized for being different. Which seems to be a product of the neighborhood demographic. Both of my children have since moved on to a school where they can be embraced for who they are. Your children will get a good academic education at Lowe. That is not disputable. But if you are looking to cultivate a deeper experience for your child, to teach your child that academics are only one facet to education, then have some other schools on your list to explore as well.

Our child has had a great experience at Lowe. Teachers, staff, and the principal are always eager to help their students to be successful. There's a rich mix of activities, too, ranging from basketball to chess to orchestra. Lowe's PTA is strong, with many activities, plenty of parent volunteers, and does a great job of helping with funds for school programs, most recently technology. Lowe's test scores are high. In particular, Lowe's math program is excellent - most recent test scores were #1 of district elementaries, even topping the traditional schools, and were 2nd in the district only to Dupont Manual High, one of the nation's top high schools. Note: Test score data on this site is a few years old.

This is by far the worst elementary school I have ever seen. I attended this school as a child and they have the worst teachers. One in particular would regularly take my desk and dump all my belongings on the floor and degrade me in front of the whole class, calling me names, and getting in my face. This happened on multiple occasions and when my mother tried contacting the school they were rude and short saying they would take care of the problem. The teacher still works at this school today and I am now a high school graduate and in college. The memories of this horrible school will never be erased. Don't send your children here

Absolutely love this school! Dr. Raitzer genuinely cares for the kids and the teachers are wonderful! Fantastic PTA, too!

I have a son with special needs at Lowe. The teachers really care and do everything they can to help him learn. They also meet with me whenever I have questions or I am worried. The principal and counselor know my son and me and look out for us. I love this school.

Very disheartened about the quality of education my child receives here. She is a special needs child, and I'm constantly reminding the faculty of her goals on her I.E.P. I am transferring her out. If you have a special needs child, choose elswhere

We moved to Louisville 3 yrs ago. We've had our ups & downs-as with any school-but Dr. Raitzer is an outstanding principal who is committed to her students and parents. Teaching styles, personality, etc. may vary but I always sensed the teachers were genuinely concerned for my kids' well-being. Finally, the PTA and parents put alot of time and effort into activities, events, etc. & it makes all the difference of course. Overall, I've been happy with the school and the education they've received.

If you're looking for a school where you can be a real part of what's going on, Lowe is the place for you. Every child gets special attention because the teachers and administrators care so much. Kids excel (look at the test scores - really high for all groups of kids!) I could have chosen a private school or another public school for my kids, but we couldn't be happier that we chose Lowe.

Lowe is a fantastic school! I have two sons that attend now and one due to start next August! The teachers are so nice and really try there hardest to do what is best for each individual student! It is also a very fun school! There are many fun family events planned throughout the year! I would highly reccomend Lowe to any family!

I feel that Lowe Elementary is over rated. I also feel that the teacher's leave the kids that are not so advanced on the back burner and that they just move them along. I feel bad because one of my kids are in that school and I am there everyday and see it for myself. They let the more advanced students do the job of the teacher and assistant teacher. I feel that they need to be checked on more and not notified so that other's can see what I am talking about.

Lowe has the best administration and teaching staff of any public school in the area! The school always welcomes parents and many of the teachers send their own kids there. The test scores are also very high.

Lowe has a great academic program. Very hands on principal. They have music, art, basketball team, computer classes, gym classes, spanish classes, etc. Great particpation in the PTA. Put out a newsletter for upcoming events and what happened previously to keep all parents up to date. Once a month the school goes skating. All of the teachers are very concerned with giving the best education possible to the children.

My husband and I and our child love Lowe. Our son's reading has so improved this year in first grade and we give the teacher most of that credit. He has been able since kindergarten to participate in chess and now has the opportunity to take Spanish once a week! Teachers have an open door policy; and, the administration in the building is very approachable. The PTA and parent involvement are outstanding. The atmosphere is very calm in the bulding. We are so thankful that our 6 yr our child spends his almost 7 hour day at Lowe!

About the tests

In 2010-2011 Kentucky used the Kentucky Core Content Tests (KCCT) to assess students in grades 3 through 8 and 10 through 12 in reading, social studies, science, writing, and math. The Elementary School results displayed on GreatSchools profiles are for grades 3 through 5 combined for each subject. Middle School results are for grades 6 though 8 combined, and High School results are for grades 10 though 12 combined. The KCCT is a standards-based test, which means it measures how well students are mastering specific skills defined for each grade by the state of Kentucky.
