I am a 2009 graduate of SHS. I liked that the school was smaller. We had the homecoming parade, unlike the other high schools in the area. Extra curricular activities were encouraged and I enjoyed participating in them. I did have a problem with a few teachers who seemed to think that since they had earned their tenure, they were getting paid to socialize. One would talk about tv the entire class and try to cram the lesson into the last 10 minutes of class. Another would keep false record of assignments I had completed. She would mark that I hadn't completed or turned in an assignment when I had. My mother spoke with the principal at the time to have me moved to another class and he refused. Because of this my grade suffered in a subject I had always excelled in. High school is the time to really prepare for college, and aside from occasional tours of SCC, there wasn't much preparation. We were never told how to apply for financial aid, I never received any guidance in finding a career path, or even what college I'd like to attend. I encourage parents to research schools before enrollment. I'm doing this now as my oldest child is almost 3. I want them to have a better experience.

It seems every extra activity is expensive. Many students are being ommited because of lack of finances. A perfect example is the trip to New York in December, $500.00 plus spending money is unnecessary. How many students will not be able to participate?

It's a very good school. You can't go wrong going there. They don't have a lot of classes to choose from, but it's a good school, it's rather small, and you will learn something there.

My daughter is an 11th grader at Somerset High School. I moved here because of the quality of the schools and the low class sizes. The teachers are young and set high expectations for students and themselves. My daughter particularly loves her Art and her Spanish classes. The teachers make the classes interesting and have a great rapport with the kids. There are many clubs and organizations available for students. The principal and assistant principal are strict but very personable and accessible for the students. The school has a positive, safe atmosphere. Oh, they have outstanding athletic programs as well....... Go Jumpers!! NN
