I have a child that attends this school and is struggling in Reading. His teacher has convinced the staff and some school board employees that my child has attention deficit disorder, ignoring the fact that he was taken to a doctor to be evaluated for this and the physician's diagnosis was that he does not have ADD. I am fighting with everything I have to get the proper accomodations for my son to bring his grades back up and the school has no interest in helping me. His grades went from A's and C's last year to F's this year. My greatest hope is to remove my child from this school and send him to one that will take action to help him get the education he deserves!
In my opinion, this School is great. Provided your child(ren) is/are perfectly well-behaved (zombie-like). Other than that, this School is HELL for Parents to havlve to deal with. The St. Mary School System seems to get more than their share of 'Off Days'. Hardly a week goes by that there's not an 'out for (something)' day. They have a very low tolerance for anything out of the norm. They told me and my family once (face-to-face, mind you) that they were not going to give up on my Son any time soon. 2 days later, they put him out and made arrangements for him to begin attendance at the local Alternative School. I also agree with the other Parent about the Teachers' poor attendance. As much as Teachers cry about not being paid enough, you'd think that they would be working EVERY Monday-Friday WITHOUT INTERRUPTION! But that's not the case at all. I'll fight for Teachers to get a pay raise when they start working SOLID SCHEDULES like everyone else on Earth. They get an INSANE AMOUNT of Off Days. [>:-O
My children did well at this school years ago and my grandchildren are doing well now. Like every school, there are a few of the teachers that need to go. Overall, the faculty is caring and teach more than what is in the books. Discipline problems are handled according to the rules in the handbook. This school is a real asset to our community.
It is my opinion the biggest problem is lack of leadership, unreliable staff, and at best a daycare attitude towards curriculum. the kids run the school . The office doesn t send written notices , or call to make sure the parents are aware of problems. For example this year my daughter, 12 years old, received ISS, in this case she had to go to Franklin and attend school for the day. I would think this would warrant a phone call. No call, she arranged for the other child s parent to pick her up at the bus stop, and drop her off at the bus stop after school. My husband and I were not aware of this till several weeks later. This is one instance that is inexcusable. I am not impressed with this school. I also think the teachers attendance is poor to say the least. Centerville gets a d- rating.
At first, my children thought this school was great. After a few months, however, they started complaining about unfair treatment by the teachers. My children are making straight A's but I feel very uninformed at times. Their teachers also seem to miss a lot of days of school. I have to probe to find out what's going on with my kids. I have visited the school on several occasions--with and without invitation. There seems to be great school spirit in this small neighborhood school.
Centerville High is a great school!! My children are well taken care of and I am well informed about the things going on at school. The teachers are wonderful.
I was a student at Centerville High before hurricane Andrew in 1992. Even though the faculty has probably seen changes, the spirit of the school is sure to be the same. We always had top-notch teachers, who were not so overwhelmed with students that they couldn't stop for a minute and help the kids who didn't catch on right away. I can definitely say that there were hardly any kids who got left behind. I wish they had more schools like Centerville, where you can know that all your children are in the same place regardless of grade, where the teachers seemed to genuinely care about the development of your children, and where sports isn't the main focus of the school (even though we had pretty decent baseball and basketball teams in '92).
I moved specifically to put my daughter in this school. What a wonderful choice I made in doing so! The entire faculty is to be praised in their efforts. My daughter has never done so well, her attitude is wonderful and it is such a joy to see her come home happy everyday from school. Thank you Centerville High School for making my daughter comfortable in her surroundings and ensuring she is put in classes she can excel in.
