My daughter Is in the third grade at GW Carver Elementary. She also attended second grade at Carver as well. I have frequent and ongoing communication with her teacher. Parents are kept informed of homework, tests and special events via a weekly newsletter from the teacher. The school also calls our home phone with prerecorded messages from the principal for other updates. My child receives extra assistance in reading so she has been evaluated continually and her deficits are being addressed. Her second grade teacher took the class on at least 10 field trips which were revelant to class material. The kids have special events for positive behavior such as recceiving dragon (school mascot) dollars for good behavior and can spend their earned dollars at the dragon store. They have several other annual and semi annual events for positive behavior as well. The ciricculum is appropriate for the age-appears to be a grade level ahead of what I learned at her age in an excellent school. I have very few compliants about the school-limited extra ciriccular activities, dated playground equipment, and not too much focus on math and science. Large emphasis is placed on reading.
We are a military family in DeRidder, and are happy with Carver Elementary. My kids are a little on the 'active' side, so I appreciate the discipline offered here at Carver. The kids get plenty of computer time, and reading is encouraged. We now have a new principal, who is not only easy to deal with, but a parent of young children herself which is nice. There is a little more junk food access than I am used to in a school environment, but overall I am happy with the education that my children are receiving. There is also a lot of opportunity for parental involvement which is nice.
We moved here one year ago because the schools in Ft. Polk were so overcrowded. We came from a Magnet school in ID and were deeply disappointed. This school is about one year behind in the curriculum compared to our old school, very little enrichment has been done. Disciple is handled by some teachers as if we are still in the middle ages. Our daughter was so scared of going to school that we had to involve the counselor. Previously she loved school. Children have to walk on color-coded lines in the hallways, 'zipped and clipped'. With her first teacher they had to put their heads on the table when any other teacher entered the room. If they had to use the bathroom close after the appointed time they would have to stand on the wall during the next recess as punishment. Very disappointing all around.
Very disappointing. We recently moved to another state and my eyes were finally opened to what a 'real' school should be. I never had anything to compare it to until we went into another school system. Carver is a joke. They care nothing about the child's education. They honestly couldn't care less about what happens to the child or if they get a real education. Kids are passed when they shouldn't be just to make the school look good. Needless to say my child was way behind at the new school.
