After attending this school I was not prepared at all for college. I would not recommend anyone attending DeRidder High School. I had one teacher literally fall asleep at his desk while many others would just spend the whole day playing on the computer. If you get paid to go to work do your job. There were teachers that would call students slow and stupid, which is last thing any teacher should ever do. I hardly learned anything attending this school. They care more about dress code than academics.

I like the system Deridder High School has going. My child was failing a few classes before transfering to this school, when she got here to deridder she brought all her grades up. She no longer has any failing grades. I'm proud and appreciate this school.

I think our school stinks!! They care more about dress code then any thing else. I font mind wearing dress clothes but what about are education. We possibly could have laptops in are class rooms. And better lunches. We need to up grade with the rest of the world

This school lacks professionalism accross the board from school administration to school board administration. Academics are lacking and very little is done to encourage and help the underpriviledged students.

I'm disappointed overall with Louisiana Schools. It is frustrating to have an intelligent student who is stuck in a classroom with lower functioning students that the teachers are required to cater too. They are missing out on advancing their intelligent students by challenging their minds. My daughter is so bored in her classes that it is hard for her to stay focused and care. I guess she will be attending Louisiana School for Math, Science and the Arts for the rest of her high school years just like her older sister did.

I just moved to DeRidder from a bigger city, and boy is it a big change. The school itself is rather small, only 1000 student for a full high school. But the students arent at all a problem, they are very much kind and helping (most of them). There are no advanced courses for subjects, in my other school, there were numerous courses that the teacher tought, some were easy, some were for more advanced student.

I honestly don't feel this school is deserving of even one full star. If you don't expect any form of education and want nothing more than for your child's choice of clothing to be criticized, this is the school for you. Their biggest concern at DeRidder High is whether or not your clothing has logos or your shirt is tucked in. Because, we all know those things are the keys to good education. This school is really a joke. Its a horrible environment and in my three years here I've been bullied and harrassed by the administration over the pettiest of things. The administration seems to be on a major power trip and just wants to fight the students, not help them in anyyway. --'07-'07 Junior, CS

My mother is an employee and I used to sub. so I know all about the dress code. The school pays more attention to dress code than anything else. How is taking a logo off helping the children learn better. It's not. If they were concerned about the kids learning as much as they are dress code things would be a lot better. And about sports. It's all about who you know, not what you know. I think that's all I need to say about that!

All in all I don't rate DeRidder High School very highly. The staff does try, but they don't give it their all. Favoritism is showed toward students of a higher monetary class and to the students who participate in the sports departments. I graduated from this school, but I don't feel that I got the best education that I could have. Teenagers need guidance and a sense of challenge. I don't think this school offers much of a challenge. Dress code is enforced and is ridiculous. I don't see the need for uniforms. They're teenagers and not soldiers or staff members. DeRidder High School could be a lot more than what it is.

Almost all classes are overcrowded and noisy. If transferred to this area, consider a longer commute from a different town. Looking forward to job transfer to get back to better schools.

Our experience with this school was very disappointing. Quality of academic programs is poor. High teacher turnover. No honors or accelerated classes offered. DeRidder High School celebrates mediocrity. My student complained of being bored in her classes to her counselor who replied, 'Be patient with your teachers'. Student behavior is out of control. My student consistently complained of loud, uncontrolled classrooms where students refused to listen to the directions of the teacher. The only student handbook rules this school seems to be concerned with is their dresscode. Which, by the way, is in force, and causes a great deal of extra expense on the parental pocketbook. If your child plays football or baseball, this may be an adequate school, as visually, that seems to be where all the funding goes. Large brand new field house, immaculate ball fields and the like.

I agree with the last parent's comments.Especially those of the football team.They need a good lesson in 'Team'.The school lacks discipline.They have rules which they don't inforce (dresscode, smoking)They do not accept or seak parental involvement and volunteering.I have offered to individual staff as well as administrators and have never been included.The Clubs and extracurricular activities are adiquate but could use some real organization.The class selection is ok but far from truly challenging.My very active teen skates by with 3.7-4.0 with little studying, he is in almost all CP or CPG. I feel that these classes are not up to snuff with any other place we have lived. If you start at this school work hard to educate your self and encourage your student to take all cp/cpg classes they are not that much harder and they will really need them if they plan to go to college or another school.

Overall the school does a good job. With the exception of a few teachers, they seem to show concern and are always willing to assist the students. Not being a 'local,' you do see a slight favoritism toward those who are locals and are richer. However you also see these same parents spending more time and money at and for the school. Academically the school offers several programs that will prepare you for college. It depends on how willing the student is to work. The drama program, this year is below standard; no major programs or plays will be produced this year. The sports program needs work, especally football. The program lacks good coaching and is in desire need of disciple. Also if you are not one of the three sports, football; basketball; or baseball, the support is very limited. Volleyball is not offered at all.

The teachers and faculty at this school are dedicated. The parish has a hard time staffing because of the low pay scale. Teachers who volunteer to work all year with clubs, like student government and interact only receive an extra $100 for the whole year. Some parents are willing to volunteer, but the same ones always show up. All are invited and asked to help, but most just criticize but don't volunteer themselves. Volunteers are at the school that don't even have kids attending there. The principals are consistent. Parents call them at home and they take care of all the kids. My son could have been kicked out of school, instead, they worked with him and he graduated. I'm a single parent with children on free lunch, so I don't see the same as the other reviews. The principal probably saved my kid.

I agree with the previous 2 parent statements. If you are from DeRidder and have money your child is treated differently than one from the 'outside' even if you are of a little higher income. Rules apply to some - not others. Schools are run down. A couple of the teachers are way above par but others...! If you are a parent of means and status then you are involved. Otherwise you are not. It is always the same parents.

This school, as the previous parent has said, is great for anyone who has money or parents in power, because this is a small town it is more about who you associate with, than your grades.

Well I believe there are some basically good teachers there but the way they inforce rules there leaves alot to be desired. If you are from a well to do family it seems you can follow your own rules but if you are from a normal income family and not in the in crowd you have follow the rules to a tee. I dont disagree with the rules I just think they should all follow them just not the lower income kids. And it seem it is easy to get drugs there sometimes my child see more of that than I think she should. It would be a lot better all around if there was more imphasis put on keeping grades up than what click you are in but sometimes that plays in there dispite what some think.

In 2012-2013 Louisiana used the Louisiana Educational Assessment Program for the 21st Century (LEAP 21) to assess students in grades 4 and 8 in math, English language arts, science and social studies. The LEAP 21 is a standards-based test, which means it measures specific skills defined for each grade by the state of Louisiana. The goal is for all students to score at or above basic on the test.

In preparation for new assessments in 2014-15, Louisiana is including more common core aligned content in LEAP and iLEAP tests in 2012-13 and in 2013-14. The percent of students earning a proficient score is expected to be lower as a result of this change.
