Teachers take extra steps to tutor before and after school. Students are rewarded for good test score. A great school to be in to be challenged.
This is a great community school. If you want your child to have an education, he/she can get it here!
Its ok. Not the best of schools but its ok. Teachers should teach because they love to help our students. Not just because it is a job.
'All praise to Northwood High. May it always stand. Let banners of orange and white wave across the land!' As I reflect on Northwood and the fond memories that I had as a student in the 80's and the ones my children allowed me to share most recently, all I can do is be Thankful for the STRONG academic foundation that school provided us. We found what we were looking for and what we needed in a school and as with anything, you get out what you put in. The faculty , though many faces have changed, seems to mirror the same stern character paired with high expectations that I was challenged by in my youth. I am thankful that I was not coddled but nurtured and my children had their feet held to the fire to excel beyond what was comfortable. Thank you Northwood, 'we forever honor you!'
The only neighborhood high school left in the parish. Outstanding faculty. Warm environment. Dynamic leadership. Wonderful and caring counseling department. Please remember that a school is simply a building. The population determines whether one receives a quality education or not. All students can learn but there are limits. Also, remember that children are only products of their parents. Genetics play a large part of just how far a child may go, or not, academically. I firmly believe that parents are not keeping the smart kids at home and sending us the mentally and behaviorally challenged ones at home. By the same token, I do not believe that educators have gone to college for 4-6 years, paid thousands of dollars, and sacrificed countless hours of their own personal time to 'sit in a classroom and pass out worksheets'. Check it out for yourself. Don't take my word for it.
i think this school has a pretty good atmosphere. I do think that the staff could use some work, but other than that its a pretty good school.. and i love attending it.
Northwood is an excellent school for students and parents to get involved in now. 2007-2008 will be my forth year at Northwood and I love every bit of it. I am involved in so many things including: the award-winning Falcon Line (National Champions), Renaissance, Drill Team, Z-Club, and Drama Club. I have got to say; Northwood has definitely improved since my freshman year. We have a great principal, a big brand new gymnasium, more students, and a better staff. We have outstanding sponsors and coaches for our extracurricular activities. Our marching band is becoming more known and is trying new things. Our Falcon Line, which I am a currently a member and proud of, is still undefeated. We are the ONLY DANCE TEAM in Shreveport to compete in Nationals in Texas against numerous dance teams from various countries and still keep the title. Our academic programs are great. -Monica Gilmer, 16
I attended NHS for four years. I will always stand behind my school and its teachers. My experience there was unforgettable. I felt important and known, which is something I never could have received at a larger school. I was in all enriched classes and was challenged in every subject. Almost all of my teachers were enthusiastic about their subjects and made learning fun. I remember particularly well measuring water displacement by stepping into a garbage can full of water and lining up at four o'clock in the morning to choose research paper topics for the 'Master of the English Language'. I was also involved in many clubs including Student Council and Falconline. For any parents considering Northwood for their child, I would encourage them to visit the school and speak with students and teachers. I promise they will not be disappointed.
I went to Northwood last year. I think it offers some of the best teachers possible. Mrs.King and Coach Wall were by far my favorite. Northwood is the best school and offers positive support. The extracurricular activities were also wonderful and offers a great variety of sports to choose from.
NHS is a great school. The Teachers are their for you and are willing to spend extra time with you if you need the help. Our school has really improved since we have got a new pricipal. Northwood is big on extra-cuirrcular activites and on academics. If your not really into playing a sport like I am you can always join a club. There are several to choose from. I am on the Black Studies, FCA, Z-Club and I am on the Newspaper. I keep my grades up and if I slip I can catch up rather fast with help from my teachers. Northwood is a great school and I love it.
I am a graduate of Northwood in the late 90's and I can honestly say that Northwood prepared me for the challenging academic curriculum that I have faced in college and graduate school. I feel obligated to defend our school from the bad reviews b/c Northwood truly is one of the few very good Caddo parish schools remaining in which a student may attend and get a good, solid foundation of academic skills to take him/her to the next level of education---IF the student wants it! I must stand strong for our enriched teachers for they complement the best of what Northwood has to offer and I definitely would put them at the top of Caddo Parish's best teachers. As go for sports and extra-curricular activities, I feel that now that we have a dedicated principal to push us in these areas, every student can enjoy very fulfilling high school experience.
I attended NHS for all 4 of my high school years. I feel that it is a very student oriented environment. The members of the staff watch out for all of the kids as if they were their own. The teachers are well learned and teach their subjects well. Sports are a big part of the school, as they are at every school, but other activities are provided also. Activities like clubs and various academic programs in which students can interact with both peers and teachers. The only way that a child can't enjoy their experience at NHS is if they go into their high school career with poor expectations that they are only destine to fulfill. It isn't the schools fault if the parent isn't satisfied with the childs academic or athletic experience, the kid either has it or he doesn't. Accept responsibility for failure don't blame the school. mallory.j.o.
Northwood has the potential to be an excellent school, unfortunately it lacks the leadership and vision to really excell. My son attended Northwood and overall we were not happy with the school. There is a lack of communication between teachers and parents. Many of the teachers do not seem to care about the students. The baseball program was awful! The boys were shown favortism and not treated fairly. Our other son now attends another school in the parish and we are all much happier with this school. Good students will continue to choose other schools until Northwood gains leadership and a vision of excellence.
I graduated from Northwood and while I was there only a handful of teachers really cared about the well being of the students. Some of my teachers came in, sat down, and passed out worksheets. Others really cared and tried to help out if you were having probelms. Overall, Northwood is a pretty good school. I never went to school afraid, scared, or even worried something would happen to me, like some schools. I'm not a parent, but I did attend Northwood and like I said before, it's a pretty good school.
This school does not offer the extracurricular activities that I would prefer my daughter to have. Unless you play sports, you're out of luck in this area. Her teachers are not enthusiastic about their teaching, and some barely know how to teach the subject. I pulled my daughter out of this school after only one year.
i think it is a great school. i went there and my mother went there and a lot of my friends and there parents went to northwood. i think it is an awsome school.
