My son transferred to South Highlands this year as a second grader, and he transferred from a very strong neighborhood school. I cannot tell you how wonderful this experience has been! I wish all students could know what it is like to go to a school where EVERYONE is dedicated to making you a success in learning. They set the bar very high, and the kids reach the bar! A tough decision to leave our neighborhood school, but he is reaping a benefit that his other school would not have been able to provide. We love you. South Highlands!

I have raised 3 children who have graduated from college. Now I have a daughter in the 5th grade at South Highlands. South Highlands is the finest school I have ever been associated with. My only regret is that it doesn't have a middle school for my daughter to attend.

South Highlands Magnet School offers a wonderful learning environment for children. I love that the school is so diverse, with people of different cultures, races, and, especially, socio-economic backgrounds. However different our make-up might be, we all share the most important quality -- a love and respect for education. There is definitely an intellectual curiosity that abounds at South Highlands school. That, combined with the teachers' efforts, administrative support and super parental involvement, makes South Highlands Magnet School an awesome place to be.

What an awesome school! As a new parent and after having my son here for his first year, we were very pleased! The staff is so supportive and top-notch! Am very pleased with Mr. Burton, our principal. He is always interacting with the students. One thing I am so proud of is the level of innovative programs at South Highlands. They really do look at all ways of making sure they are growing in every area. AWESOME SCHOOL!

South Highlands is a wonderful learning environment for children. The administrative staff is top notch, and the outstanding teachers sincerely care about the students and train them well. There is no better academic grade school in the city, yet the children appear to enjoy going to school each day and are happy while at school. Many students participate in music, art and other types of extracurricular activities. Recently, a more organized effort has been made to include students in sports, such as soccer, baseball and basketball. As a result of the successful efforts of teachers and staff in maintaining a favorable educational environment, ongoing parental involvement easily is obtained, and parents readily, and enthusiastically, participate in school functions and activities. Overall, it is hard to imagine a better, more effective way to introduce children to education than the opportunities provided at South Highlands.

I have been a South Highlands parent for nine years and cannot say enough about our wonderful school! The students, teachers, staff and parents are top-notch and work together to make South Highlands a great place to learn. Students are encouraged to be individuals and find their own gifts and talents whether it is academic, art, music, drama or something else! As PTA President this year, I can tell you that parental involvement is key to the success of South Highlands. When there is a need at the school whether it be cookies or computers, the parents are there to make it happen.

Sth Highlands is a fabulous school where my daughter can excel in academic subjects as well as art. With the new leadership of our new principal, parents can easily communicate with him and he is truly concerned about the well-being of the student body. We're so thankful to have Sth Highlands!

About the tests

In 2012-2013 Louisiana used the integrated Louisiana Educational Assessment Program (iLEAP) to assess students in grades 3, 5, 6, and 7 in math, English language arts, science, and social studies. The iLEAP is a standards-based test, which means it measures specific skills defined for each grade by the state of Louisiana.

In preparation for new assessments in 2014-15, Louisiana is including more common core aligned content in LEAP and iLEAP tests in 2012-13 and in 2013-14. The percent of students earning a proficient score is expected to be lower as a result of this change.

About the tests

In 2012-2013 Louisiana used the Louisiana Educational Assessment Program for the 21st Century (LEAP 21) to assess students in grades 4 and 8 in math, English language arts, science and social studies. The LEAP 21 is a standards-based test, which means it measures specific skills defined for each grade by the state of Louisiana. The goal is for all students to score at or above basic on the test.

In preparation for new assessments in 2014-15, Louisiana is including more common core aligned content in LEAP and iLEAP tests in 2012-13 and in 2013-14. The percent of students earning a proficient score is expected to be lower as a result of this change.
