Two of my children attended Narragansett. Each had different experiences. The school seriously effected our son's self-confidence. From bullying (punch in the stomach, 1st grade) to a higher level of attention paid to kids in athletics than kids interested in science/math. There is just 1 person heading the Gifted & Talented program for the entire school system & she does not make herself available. While pushing their "code of conduct on children" - honesty, responsibility, courage, respect, our son was quick to point out the aids (playground & lunch room) were horribly rude & disrespectful. When he broke his arm at school, it went unnoticed until he arrived home 3 hours later. Later, the principal called our 9 yo w/ ADHD/Spectrum Disorder to the office to ask him "why he didn't tell someone his arm hurt." Our daughter's experience was good but then she fit the "norms" of the school. In our new school system, it is clear she is behind. Big improvements could be made. Principal and her staff: little in the way of accountability. I agree w/ previous posts about the guidance department. 4 months to schedule an IEP that was put off until year's end. Is this an issue of understaffing?
Previous poster is right about the Guidance department lacking because they 'know it all'. Otherwise, it is a wonderful school!
Loved having my child there. The teachers are great, the pricipal really cares, and the office staff is wonderful. I cannot say enough about the great teachers! Guidance (BW) is lacking because one of the counselors 'knows it all.' If you can deal with that, your children will have a great experience there.
This school is one of the highest rated in the entire state of Maine. No wonder why the Town of Gorham's students are ranked as some of the smartest in Maine according to the No Kid Left Behind criteria.
This school is called 'The Center for Inquiry'....and it truly is!! I have had nothing but great experiences in dealing with the staff...and my son looks forward to going to school EVERYDAY!! Love them!
