There are teachers here that care about the students and then there are teachers who have no business teaching at all. There are teachers at this school that openly bully students and allow peer to peer bullying to go on. Parents have been pulling their children out of school and home schooling. The administration continues to allow the bullying and now are blaming the parents for their failures at the school. I know of at least 2 parents who have pulled their children out to home school and a few other parents who moved out of the area due to the lack of education provided here. The school has failed to meet AYP for at least 4 years in math and while working on math the last few years are now on monitor status for reading. They can't manage to do both well at once. They also fail to provide school choice as a CIPS school. Our students are behind in education and no one seems to care much about it. They do have great after school programs! As well as many other co curricular activities. There is a great rec department in the area that also provides activities for the children of the community.
While I do find that there are some very caring teachers in this school, the overwhelming feeling I get is a lack of concern for the students and their education. Some teachers are anxious to look to blame the students and parents for their own shortcomings as educators.
There isn't a staff around that can compare with the staff at Medwasy Middle School for the love, dedication, compassion and understanding of the children who attend here. The Kids are welcomed for who they.
We're happy with our school. We're glad the kids have many activities to choose from: various band levels, show choir, chorus, soccer, basketball, softball/baseball, cross country, intramural volleyball, Katahdin Area Partnership activities after school, math league, 8th grade algebra, staff who choose to teach through thematic units, at least one field trip in every grade, several teachers with master's degrees in middle level education, teachers who have been published in middle level publications, teachers who have won middle level awards in Maine, Renaissance, monthly school assemblies, student of the month awards... We would love to see more outreach to parents; maybe monthly evenings to showcase student learning, or end of unit celebrations; a PTO!; and using parent volunteers in the school.
I was a student at this school for three years and I loved it. I moved in eigth grade and it was very hard for me because the teachers at this school were very great and the students were very kind to one another. There was no vandilism and I haven't heard of any fights occuring there. The teachers are always willing to help out their students if they need extra help on an assignment. The guidence counselor was very kind and considerate. You could talk to her about anything! The gym teacher wouldn't force you to do something if it would embarass you an any way (I should know) This was a very good middle school and I miss attending school there.
