Memorial is a great school to learn and It is mostly bully-free. We DO have assemblies about how to avoid bulling and the civil wrights team does a lot about that, Bulling is not a big big problem in our school. The teachers have a heart and DO care for their pupils. The vice principal and principal dedicate their time to the students and they will care if one of their students are bullied or anything happens. They are nice to everybody and they know everybody by heart. The classes challenge students from academically gifted from students that really need help in simple tasks. The sports teams and clubs are great and they have a interest for every student. I believe that everything the post from june 26th, 2009 is the exact opposite. Memorial is one of the best Junior Highs in Maine in my opinion.

I love Memorial Middle School because it has enabled my grandson Philip to excel throughout his three years in attendance there! The teachers and staff are wonderful and really help each and every student to realize their potential and get them ready for admittance to high school learning!

If you want to send your child to an apathetic, bully infested, and poor class quality school - then this is the place for them. The school will barely care whether your child is mistreated or not, they do have assemblies about how to not bully and what not - but believe me, it's just an act to make them look good. Classroom schedules are unorganized and only reach to the needs of an average student, no higher level classes given to above average students. It is a pitiful excuse for a 'learning' environment really. The outstanding band program and some of the teachers who love what they do are the only things that make this school any good at all.

For average students this is probably a fine school. The teachers and principal really care and have been very open to meeting with us as parents. Sports seem to be fairly important. The band program in all the South Portland schools is very good and has a very active fundraising group which keeps it going strong. Our child was able to have after-school lessons in a second instrument just because she showed interest. However, if your child is academically gifted, don't expect much. The AG program is nominal (for Language Arts only; it met less than once per month last year!!) and there are just no resources for extra/more challenging work for the extra-bright kids. Although the AG program at the elementary school level was fine, we'll be moving soon to a district with a stronger academic program for high-level learners.
