I am a Calvert School graduate from the lower school. I understand not all of you will agree with my opinion, but Calvert put me through some really rough times. While providing the structure I needed growing up, I found the school very lacking in artistic and creative encouragement. I made some long lasting friends and many good memories there, but all in all, it was a harsh, rigid, extremely structured environment. I would recommend this school to anyone for the first few years, but I needed to get out. It may have changed since I attended, but this is my experience.
My husband and I live, literally, paycheck to paycheck to send our daughter to Calvert. Our investment is worth every penny! Yes, the curriculum is challenging. Yes, we love the teaching staff and administrators. Yes, Calvert strikes the right balance between robust academics and opportunities for the students to "get out the giggles and wiggles" via recess or PE. But from our perspective, the intangible benefits of a Calvert School education is the distinguishable feature that separates Calvert from other private schools and why we will continue to sacrifice in lieu of the public school alternative. Our daughter is independent, confident, articulate, intelligent, and well-rounded. She is respectful, compassionate, and responsible. All of the faculty and administrators know my daughter by name; but more importantly she knows each of them, including the indispensable groundskeeping, housekeeping, and cafeteria staffs. Calvert is a cohesive family where everyone is valued and appreciated. While we instill these same values and principles in our child, Calvert teaches and reinforces these values in every aspect to develop a leader and solid citizen in our community.
We have only experienced the Lower School and so are not in a position to review the Middle School. Calvert has a traditional and structured style. The students learn in a mostly same sex environment, with coed specialty groups. Uniform is comfortable (Khakis & shirts for boys, plaid jumper for girls). The environment is respectful for all. Academic standards and personal attention are balanced. Courses require focus; students have assignments and receive. There is a premium on fundamental abilities: reading, writing, speech, math, problem solving, etc. with exposure to computers and art. Calvert is a haven of childhood holiday celebrations, patriotism, and plays /assemblies. Environment is insulated and safe. The academic preparation is outstanding. You can expect an honest assessment. Calvert is welcoming and actively seeks diversity. Graduates receive an excellent education and will be extremely well prepared and typically successful at the next level. Admission testing is a reliable predictor. Socially, my daughter has made wonderful friends, with whom she plays sports, has sleepovers, etc. The kids are terrific and the families are strong in the community.
Calvert School brings out the very best in its students. Our son and daughter can't wait to go to school each day, and the range of subjects they are learning is, in a word, phenomenal. We are witnessing firsthand how Calvert plays a role in shaping boys and girls into impressive young individuals.
I am a proud Calvert alumna. My Calvert education provided me with a solid foundation and a love of learning I that would not have received at any other school. The history, tradition, and approach to teaching truly make Calvert a world-class education! I am so grateful to my parents for sending me to Calvert!
Calvert has a special way of challenging children while making it fun and interesting. My children never want to miss a single day!
We absolutely LOVE Calvert School! We have two boys who attend the school and they have grown by leaps and bounds in the time they've attended Calvert. The faculty and staff are engaged, enthusiastic and incredible communicators. They are also compassionate, caring and supportive. We truly feel like we are part of the "Calvert Family"! We also feel incredibly fortunate that our children are able to attend such a magnificent school. The Seward Family
Our two daughters love to learn at Calvert School. Calvert focuses on the fundamentals -- excellent writing skills through weekly compositions, reading and mathematics with developmental-based small groups, and a teaching staff that is supportive and caring while expecting the most our of their students. Calvert also focuses on all the great extras, like foreign language, art, history, science, physical education, mythology, music and art history. My daughters can use the new piano lab before school starts three days a week for practice time, and they learn about astrology by using the Calvert planetarium. Here's just one reason to love Calvert: One member of the administration -- including Lower School Head Dr. Ed Trusty and Headmaster Andrew Holmgren -- sit down with each student every month and comment on their folder papers. They are truly engaged with the students' academic lives!
We have had four children thrive as students and grow as individuals at Calvert School. No two kids are alike and we are grateful that Calvert has been able to academically challenge and accommodate the interests of our children.
Calvert School has been a gift to me as a former student, a past parent and a current teacher. I am most appreciative of the people- all of the students, the families, the teachers, the staff and the administration. The connections made at Calvert are so meaningful and will last a lifetime. Students at Calvert learn so many important lessons at such early ages: respect, kindness, lifelong study skills, the importance of hard work, and the rewards of taking risks. It is such a special place! I will be eternally grateful for Calvert School!
To be honest, there are so many wonderful schools in Baltimore, but what makes Calvert unique is the focus on fundamentals and the mix of single gender and coeducational learning. Students are challenged, but also nurtured and encouraged along. My son is thriving at Calvert School, and I thoroughly enjoy working at such a wonderful place as well!
We love Calvert! Both of my children love their teachers and going to school each day. The Pre-K through 8th Grade model allows the School to focus all of their energies on the younger children rather than getting overlooked by the high schools.
Calvert School is an incredible place. It offers a unique co-ed environment with small class sizes, talented teachers, and supportive administrators. Calvert provides each student with a strong foundation while also challenging them to grow academically and personally. The athletic and fine art opportunities are extensive and each child is able to find their niche. Graduates extol the virtues of their education and seek out opportunities to give back to their school. The facilities are unmatched by any local K-8 school and fit the needs of the students and faculty well. Calvert provides an unmatched education while meeting the individual needs of each student and family.
Calvert School is absolutely the best lower and middle school in Baltimore! The teachers are amazing.
Calvert School is an incredible place, unlike any other educational institution I have attended or worked for. Children who attend Calvert need to be able to keep up with the rigorous curriculum, but the caring, attentive and highly experienced teachers are able to work with a range of interests and abilities nontheless. Students will master essential academic skills while also obtaining experience in public speaking, foreign languages, the arts, and character education. After ten years since opening, the Middle School has found its groove and is a robust, student-centered learning environment that will prepare students for the demands of high schools and higher education and later for a competitive job market. It's not about how often a PTA meets or if there is 'old money' or perceived snobbery... what matters is what happens in between the walls each day between the students and the teachers, and that, I can assure you, is pure magic.
My school is terrific! My daughter wakes up every day eager to shake hands and get to Calvert!
I am thankful to have a school like Calvert because of the amazing colleagues that I have come to know. The students are curious and ambitious in everything that they do. They take pride in their work whether it is a small task or their culminating 8th Grade Castalia project. The parents and alumni are an amazing group to work with as well. They truly believe in Calvert and have dedication to their school. Deep in traditions, it is an amazing experience to see current parents (who are also alumni) speak an experience that they and their child both had while at Calvert. It is a special place for sure!
Calvert School is a wonderful school that balances a rigorous education with a nurturing atmosphere. Our children are held to the highest standards but encouraged to be themselves and to emphasize hard work above all else. I am grateful to the school for instilling a strong work ethic and attention to detail in me as a child and now my children. I feel blessed to have attended the school as a child and to be able to send my children there now. I remain grateful to the school for its commitment to excellence and individualized attention to each student.
Calvert School is a wonderful school. Calvert embraces the students; imparting knowledge, as well as developing the students unique individual skills. Calvert prepares students for the academic challenges of the world, while also fostering a sense of loyalty, responsibility, respect and civility.
I agree with the comment "There is a heavy patina of Old Baltimore money..". We had multiple children attend this school from Pre-K through middle school. GRADUALLY, the teacher quality slips from Pre-K through Middle. My child who is no superstar, did extremely well, and did not find it super competitive. The Math dept is pitiful, barring ONE teacher. The school clamors about diversity, but thwarts any deviations from WASPiness, a culture driven down from the Board of Trustees who are the "Old money". A middle school principal who was assertive enough to try to change the school culture was helped out of the school. If your child has special needs, don't even consider going there. There are no tools for evaluating special needs, let alone provide any accommodations. If you have plenty of money and don't care whether your kids are nice or nasty, then this is the place for you. Not a great experience overall.
