Want to improve this school’s profile? You can!

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a parent or community member, you can share what you know with other families by writing a review or answering a few questions about what the school offers. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.

Hello all. I am currently a member of the class of 2017 at Western High School. I say that with pride, whenever anyone asks me where I attend, because I love my school! During my freshwomen year there were several issues (which you might encounter while reading previous reviews) because of the lack of leadership roles at Western. This year we have a dedicated principal who is a Western alumna and many students and teachers can already see a positive change in our envirnonment. The main problem in this school is that some students do not take their education seriously, which in turn is a poor reflection on themselves. I do not fret because those students that I just described are leaving Western rapidly. My classes challenge me and people who complain online were most likely performing poorly in those classes. If any young female wishes to succeed, Western is the school for her! This institution is allowing me to learn in a distraction free environemnt. I have and am still growing in myself while gaining a sense of female empowerment. Thank you Western. I am a Western Dove. I am only the best.

In all of my years, I have been to about 5 schools. Western has got to be the worst. The students are disrespectful and rude towards one another (especially towards the teachers) and in terms of academics, the school is so much worse than anyone could've anticipated. Blasted music on phones and rude students are all you see in the halls and if you try to confront anyone about it, you'd better prepare for a fight. Definitely disappointed beyond belief. Do not come to this school.

This school is the absolute WORST one I've ever had the misfortune of attending. I am currently a student here, but I am begging my parents to transfer me after just one year of going. Many of the students did not pay attention during class, but instead they just played on their phones and blast music. I'm going to come out straight and say it, THIS SCHOOL IS GHETTO.The whole year I was there, I did not once see our principal and for the first couple of weeks they forgot to assign a teacher for our home room. DO NOT SEND YOUR CHILDREN HERE EVER WORST SCHOOL I HAVE EVER BEEN TO!

Western is one of the best schools in the BCPS. My daughter completed 4 years there. She was accepted into 6 colleges, all for engineering. The school has changed from 10-20 years ago, but what school hasn t? Discipline is an issue. The staff are unable to kick-out disruptive students as in the past, but that is a school system policy. In spite of the obstacles, the staff and teachers will go out of their way to help your child achieve, IF she wants to achieve. I repeat IF she wants to achieve. The teachers are overworked and stressed because they are asked to do more with less. In spite of this they are willing to go the extra mile for your daughter if she is willing to put forth the effort. The teachers staff do not have the emotional and mental bandwidth to go get and drag your child kicking and screaming to learn something. If she wants to step up and challenge herself, they are encouraging and supportive. If she wants to get C s and not try, (homework, studying, coach class) there is no one there to pull her up and cajole, pamper, bribe, convince or force her to do so. The teachers simply do not have the bandwidth. Maybe the parents should take on that role

I would like to say this school has changed dramatically for the worst. I would not recommend any girls to attend here. The girls are more concern with fighting, being disruption in class and out right disrespectful towards teachers, adults and their peers. Clearly what once was held as a high esteem and prestigious school of scholarly classy women, has changed to a bunch of low class disrespectful girls who need a lot of home training. Also, the staff is unable to manage this girls because their definitely NOT women! Run for the hills and don't send your child to this awful place. There is no learning taken place because there's to many girls in training learning to do the wrong thing!! Western High School gets a fat F- in my opinion!

Hello I am an up in coming senior at Western. Yes this school is deteriorating at the blink on an eye only because they lower their standards for the incoming girls. Reasons: because its an all girl school and we are going against other schools and the school needs the money for example, for every student we get an amount, plus if we had kept our composite score at 610 or higher we would not have as many girls (which mean no money), we would not have as many teachers (lost of jobs). Also some of these parents commenting on here kids might not of made it in. western is a wonderful school. I promise you if they claim western don't teach them nothing (lie) it teaches them to always be proud of your sex, never let anyone tell you a female cant do something a male can, it will inspire you to become the best of the best. You will meet great people before you graduate. Western also offer wonderful opportunities. Yes western has its flaws so does every other school, we also have some of the top kids in baltimore city they will do greatness in their life time. So please don't sleep on us. Western is a once in a life time thing. P.s don't send your kids here if they don't want to come.

This school has very good academics. I'm a going to Western next year, entering into the Health Science Program. You learn about human anatomy and medicine. In 12th grade you start internships in hospitals such as John Hopkins Hospital. One thing that concerns me is the space. The classroom space is very small. Other than that, I picked Western over Carver and Towson high because it will best ready me for college and getting a career.

I would also like to add that Mr. Griffin one of guidance counselors is Superb. I have found the counselor that my child is assigned to, Mrs. Ward to be unavailable and aloof. The guidance secretary has little knowledge and I have found her to be generally rude and unhelpful. Mr. Griffin has always been helpful during my visits to Western. The breakdown of counselors to student is ineffective. During my time at Western, counselors were assigned by Class not by alphabet as they are now. That meant that during busy times for Seniors that the other counselors could be available. The current model does not work well for students as many times non seniors who also have important issues are not able to meet with counselors.

Hello, I am a current senior at Western High School. Seeing the review that a current junior in Western has submitted can definitely give you insight of what a student who attends this school encounters. While all of what this student states is true there are some factors that must be taken into consideration. Yes, Western does not have heating or cooling systems in each class to accommodate every student. Which is why Western encourages their girls to wear appropriate clothing during each season (Sweaters, Shorts to the knee, etc.). Also, I agree that some students are not able to learn subjects by teachers who's first language is not English. That happens. Not everyone in North America or the world for that matter speaks English; therefore you'll have to work with people such as your teachers. So get over it. Try learning and paying attention to the language of the subject and not the flaws of your teachers. Also, I would like to state that the staff there has assembled a training guide of what a Western dove should be which is great! Western will over prepare your daughter academically! Which is what she should be coming to school for in the first place!

Hi, I would like to say that from reading the comment about Western High School being one the of most unsatisfactory school in Baltimore City, is true. Yes, in past years Western was the best school for young women to attend but now it is unruly. The principle is never there as well as guidance consulters. My being a junior in this situation is not helping me at all. There are teachers that barely know English are teaching me algebra. I do not understand anything they say or anything in my other classes because if the majority does not understand a topic then it doesn't matter. School is not about getting scholarships anymore. Its about passing, Which is becoming harder to do when the grading system makes no sense to the students nor the teachers. Western is a failing school to me. No air, no heat, no teachers, no principle, no cares, and no worries. Do you all not realize this is hurting those who come after me? But, I guess not, you all already have your education. That's what I'm told everyday.

This schools principal is Almost never on sight! She is so bad that the studends clap if or when they see her at there school! There is not much leadership and guidance in this school for these girls because she wants to make it a co ed school! This is my child's second year at the school and it's been the same way both years! She needs to go and they need someone who can restore the school back to its former self! These girls are told its a great place to be ! They deserve a great experience to reach there goals and potential and she's not interested in such !!! Vert disappointed a lot of females in our family are Western graduates they are sadden by the fall of there school!!!

Reading the reviews, I'm in shock because this is one of the worst schools I've ever dealt with. This is NOT the Western High School of back in the day. The culture/environment of the school is not conducive to learning, not by a long shot. The administration leaves a lot to be desired. Most of the teachers just do not care. When I sit in the classroom, they're disruptive, kids talking on cell phones, walking across the classroom DURING a lecture for no reason other than to chitchat with another student. There are two major groups of students at Western: those who don't care and those who are exceptional and trying for a full scholarship to Hopkins. Not many in the middle. This school needs major, major changes.

Western is a great school. It is truly a college prep school. After I graduate from Western High School in 2006 and went onto college, I was way ahead of my fellow colleagues academically and even socially. Western also teaches young ladies to be ready for success!!!! I would recommend this school to all young ladies who want to be the best!

I am a grand parent of a student at western. The vigorous curriculum is actually motivational and ensures hard work. Western is becoming a family tradition, I am a 1970 grad and my sister is a 1967 grad. The school prepares students for success.

Western High School was founded in 1844. There is a reason, actually lots of reasons, it has lasted so long. The faculty and administration actually care about the students. A great school all around.

Hello! I graduated from Western Senior High and it was one of the best experiences I have had to date. Because of the all-girls environment, I was able to expresss myself freely and not have to conform to try to fit in. I would highly recommend this school to any young lady who doesn't want to attend high school and get lost in the crowd, but wants to stand out. Excellent choice!

Hello: I attended Western Senior High. I am a graduate of the class of 2003. This school is awesome! The curriculum is far better than all other city schools! More over, it's an all-girls school. The environment is one that is filled with empowerment. We are taught to work smart and there is a thing about Western girls that I do not think is a coincidence...they all succeed beyond expectations! Great School Monica:)

Western is an exceptional school bar none, my daughter is a 2008 graduate of Western, and she is currently a freshman at Spelman College in Atlanta. All of the courses she took at Western prepared her very well for the rigorous courses she had to take at Western. All of the schools in Baltimore should take a lesson from Western. Western has 100% college acceptance for the last 5 years. Ever year they make AYP (Annual Yearly Progress) Its very rare that a student would leave Western because the curriculum was not challenging enough. The large majorities leave because the curriculum was too challenging. I was a member of the School Improvement team and was president of the PTA for three years. Hats of to Western, keep up the good work.

I'm a Freshman attending Western at the time, and I'm very pleased to say that Western is one of the best all female schools in the country. Western has great leadership, as well as wonderfull extracurricular activities such as the fashionettes, Student Government, and Sisters For Black Awareness. I've only been at this school for 3 months, and I already strongly believe that no other school in Baltimore can top Western.

My daughter is a graduate of Western High School. She recieved a full Athletic Scholarship to the College of her choice due to Western's great Track and Field program. She also recieved an Academic scholarship. I believe strongly in their program and plan to send my second daughter to Western. I am a teacher and I encourage any parent to send their child to Western High School.

I am an alumni of Western and it is the parents respnsibilty to administer certain freedom and to see that the child is at an institution that will benefit your childs goals. Last year a female from Western was accepted to all 8 Ivy League colleges in the US and recieved scholarships to them all.First female to do so in history.Western is the best school in the city for young ladies to attend. The oldest all-girl public school in the US.Some colleges look at an application just because its a Western student applying. Since graduation i am a 20 year old junior at Villa Julie College, I am spokesperson for the Mayors Office of Employment Development and work at Social Securty Administration. So Western taught me to do what I want in a career and i can do more than just one thing at a time. I can Do EVERYTHING!

Being a student that currently attends Western, I find it very challenging and a school that definitely gears you for the future. At Western, you don't have to worry about your child being distracted by boys or other unnecessary things. Our school is based upon sisterhood and although you may not get along with everyone, I find that the experience you receive here is great and you will make life long friends. Western does indeed shape you into a young lady with the principle in mind of quiet dignity and has forever been known as housing fine young ladies that ultimately shape the future. We are all diverse and unique and you can see this in the halls of Western. Of course, all schools have there small problems, no ones perfect, but I truly love my school and couldn't see myself at any other school.

Western is a fine school but I agree with the previous person. The students don't have enough freedom. I decided to transfer to Dunbar High School for the rest of my high school years [1 year left]. I was not satisfied since the 9th grade. The education wasn't as rigorous as I expected. I am the type of girl that likes a challenge, and at Western that challenge I longed for was not being fullfilled.
