This school is pretty strong academically. It has some really great teachers and the students feel secure for the most part in their environment. The PTA is very active in the school. WES provides great services to kids with special needs on both ends of the spectrum. The school does have an issue with how it handles discipline. It can be at times applied unevenly and sometimes even unfairly. WES students are for the most part really good kids with very involved parents. That's why this issue seems so strange and out of character with the school.

Westchester is a great school. It provides exceptional educational opportunities to students of all abilities from special needs to GT. The teachers are great and parent involvement is high. I have 2 kids currently enrolled at Westchester and am very pleased with their educational experiences.

My son just 'graduated' from the kindergarten program at Westchester. What a fanstastic school! The teachers were very experienced. The 4 kindergarten classes were consistent. They have a tremendous parent participation. Lots of fun, special activities after school put on by the PTA. My son really enjoyed it. We have been concerned about a learning disablity with him and his teacher was right on it - following him closely throughout the year and pushing for a 'team' meeting for an IEP. When we met with the 'team', it was an incredibly professional, experienced, caring group of individuals who spoke of my son like they have known him all his life. They listened to us. They provided us with more testing than we even expected. We are looking forward to first grade knowing that he will get the help he needs. We love WES!! Carol Burns (Mom of Brian)

My daughter has attended Westchester since it opened as a kindergardener. We have been pleased with the quality of education she has received and how the teachers will try to challenge the students to reach higher. If there is a problem there are multiple avenues to address the issue so it doesn't escalate. The specials have fabulous teachers that when the students move on to Middle School it shows the excellent training they received in the music and arts. I know she will be well prepared for entering middle school in the 2004-05 year.

About the tests

In 2011-2012 Maryland used the Maryland School Assessment (MSA) to test students in grades 3 through 8 in reading and math, and grades 5 and 8 in science. The MSA is a standards-based test, which means it measures how well students are mastering specific skills defined for each grade by the state of Maryland. The goal is for all students to score at or above proficient on the test.
