Mrs. Gray is unprofessional and unprepared to administer a school, oh and incompetent. Mr. Greene is who makes Mac Arthur the school that it is. The faculty morale is very low well because the "principle" has no leadership skills. Keep it Mr. Peyton, you're strict yet kids respect you.
This is my son's first year here, 6th grade. I heard nothing but bad about this school beforehand. I have been pleasantly surprised! The faculty is great, and the teachers keep him fully engaged. Only downside for me is the facility can use some updating (window coverings, bright paint) and their entry control makes me a little nervous.
As a military member coming from overseas, I may have become a bit spoiled, but I expected much more out of an on-base school. We have never been stationed at an Army post in the past, so I'm not sure if this is the norm or if the delinquents being bussed from the local, off-base communities are the problem. Either way, I would think base leadership would step in and do something. My kids are getting an education here, but it's not the right type. Prior to arriving here neither, bullying nor racism were ever an issue. Well, they've certainly become familiar with both issues in the short time we've been at Ft. Meade. As for the curriculum, they have been taking so-called "advanced" classes here but seam to have much less of a challenge than when taking standard courses at their previous DoD school. In general, there seems to be no accountability for teachers or students. In fact, it seems as though the students are running the school. If you have given this school a positive review, you must have very low standards.
MacArthur middle school has very unique attendants and they don't all get along, so conflict happens, but with the right push, we can get good grades and not fight so much. last year (2012) mr. Greene started administrating at our school and things have scince turned around. I've never felt so at home than when i'm with this diverse set of kids and in this building.
In all honesty a school is justified by its education just as much as its students. Grades 6-8 are when puberty hits, ie mood swings, accidents, etc. MacArthurs rep is 50/50 with students attitude and curriculum. The school offered as much as it could, it's up to the kids whether or not they want what it.
Worst school ever! I'm actually considering home schooling. Way to thank our nation's hero's. I still can not believe that this is a on p school. I thought we had standards...
Here are some suggestions for the admin: 1) develop a friendly demeanor with staff 2) stop playing favorites 3) work on transparency 4) if you can't figure out points 1 - 3, seek professional help.
My child and her friend were bullied from day one. Her friend's parents pulled her out of school half way through the year to home school. We are going to home school my daughter this year instead of sending her back there. The school is really overcrowded and that is the excuse that the teachers give when asked why they haven't seen some of the bullying. If the school is so crowded then maybe they should re-zone or build on more.
MacArthur middle is a different school. MacArthur has a bad rep. for bullying. To be honest there is a lot of drama, and not enough time to learn. I think this school has worsened my grades because I was an honor roll student my hole life durin elementary school, now I'm down to all d's and e's. The school is dirty, and the bathrooms are never kept up with. If I could change one thing about this school I would change the schools hygein.
My dog could be a principal at this school and do a better job! My job is smart, alert and friendly.
Macarthur Middle School get s areal horrible reputation about its education provided. There are many at least 90% of teachers here and willing to help all and any student who is willing to do the work and put forth the effort. The issue is behavior. Administration does not set a zero tolerance tone at the beginning of the year so kids realize the foolishness will not be tolerated. They are given way too many chances before any real consequences happen. This being said the parents of the students need to take responsibility as well. Setting a standard and an expectation of your child should be a MUST. A VALUE FOR EDUCATION should also be a must. Issues are complex, but the top of the hierarchy does not allow AP's to hold kids accountable and so often teachers do not feel supported nor appreciated by Parents, Students, BUT WORST of ALL our Administrators. Until there is value for education, trust amongst collegues and true support from administration we will continue to struggle.
MacArthur is definitely different... I honestly thought all 8th grade students were the same. Having a teenage student myself. They are not! The lack of respect that I saw at MacArthur is sad. Being in the building I had my own problem with a student. A referral was given, for the actions of the student at any other school the student would have been suspended, if not expelled. Not the case. It amazes me that the school doesn't even have an SRO. They need at least 2 if not more to handle all the situations. The AP's have their hands tied and have to get approval to suspend. If I were a parent this was the last school available for my child I would homeschool them.
Let's just say that now that we have moved, I am hoping that I can fix what damage has been done to my son's education in his two years with this school.
My son attended one year of schooling here (6th grade). I knew there were problems, but I went and followed him through his classes for a school day. I have never been so disgusted in my life. Out of control, disrespectful students, little learning happening AT ALL (how could there be). I think many of his teachers would really change things if they could, but thanks to the rules imposed on them, forget it. So the kids learn close to nothing, it'll take me 2-3 years to hopefully repair the damage done to my kid from 1 year, he went from a smart, good student to behaving like a loser to try and fit in and avoid getting beat up. Congratulations, MD public school system, you've designed a model future criminal and welfare recipient training center! What a letdown for the kids, many of whom needed real help and guidance and got this gov't-run Frankenstein instead. No wonder the rest of the world is kicking our butts academically, and I'm not buying that this is a rare case! the blob should be ashamed of itself.
My two children attend Mac Arthur and I know there is room for improvement but I do not share the same experience that many parents share. By being actively involved via e-mails ,phone calls and surprised visit I find the staff willing to help with any issues that arise. The key is parent /school connection . You cant just show up when theres a problem by then its too late . For all the parents that have a complaint ,when did you first meet the teachers , how often do you check in just to say Hello your doing a great job ? Is there anything you need in the classroom and how is my child doing ? Try that it makes all the difference in the world .
HORRIBLE!!! Teachers and administration are rude and don't support or help the students. So much bullying, specially if your white or latino.
The administration leaves a lot to be desired. MacArthur Middle School administrators are not competent enough to handle midddle school children or any children for that matter. Complaints and concerns fall upon deaf ears even as you go up the chain of command. Bullying is a serious issue at MacArthur, it is not a safe place for children.
I am a 2012MacArthur parent, PTSA Co-Chairperson, & cafeteria staff. MacArthur has a bad rep due to an old admin that didn't hold up the standard. But, the new principal & v.p.'s, and SEVERAL new teachers are upholding the educational standard that we all want and our students need, including new policies & training. The IB program offers challenging curriculum for eligible students, allowing some students to be bused in. There is anti-bullying training & procedures in place: STRICTLY ENFORCED. Due to the old rep, people including some Board members are not giving MacArthur a chance. Look into the new admin, staff, and policies and see for yourself before making a decision. I talked to the counselor & gave MacArthur a chance. I challenge you to do the same instead of believing everyyhing negative you hear. Too easy to post and believe the negative...where's the positive? If you want a school with absolutely no fighting or bullying, then homeschool because there's no such public school. As for parent involvement, MacArthur offers many opportunities to volunteer: PTSA, in classroom & office, lunch & hall monitor, etc.... A person only needs to show up/call to volunteer.
Pros- School Uniforms and on a military base (added security) Cons- School is old, crowded, and the admin is not exactly friendly. The school serves military children but also buses in kids from the hood off-post. So the school does not live up to the potential it could have!
There is another side of this story than just test scores and the comments posted below. My child has been at MacArthur for 3 months--in 6th grade. I was afraid to send him here because of the school's reputation for unruly behavior. But to my surprise, we have found excellent, dedicated, and caring teachers and a curriculum that is both challenging and engaging. Our one experience with bullying was dealt with swiftly, decisively, and fairly. Yes, there are problems with this--and any--middle school. But there is also another side to MacArthur--dedicated administrators & teachers, a creative and challenging curriculum, and kids who strive to excel and achieve.
