BEST SCHOOL EVER! With a new principal, MacArthur Middle School has been the most exciting year of my life. Just starting 6th grade in a new school, with new people, it was hard to adjust to. But with the help of awesome teachers, like the ones in the Towson Tigers team, they helped us become a great student. I am looking forward to the rest of my 3 years in middle school to be the best. Ones that I could have not have made in any other school. We have fun incentives , like pep-rallies, dances, and days we can wear hats, crazy looking socks, and more!
I am military and my daughter attended this school for two years. From what I have seen from the school in regards to my child and a friend's child, the teacher's favor non-military children quite heavily. My friend's child said that the teacher said something to the effect that military children have it much better than the other children from offbase so this teacher said that they would give them "help" with their grades. In essence, give them a better grade regardless of their actual performance. This particular child worked very hard to have good grades - and was given "D"s and "E"s routinely. Only after going back to the teacher for a review of the work was an "A" or "B" given. Military children are also a minority here and targeted for bullying by those from offbase. My own daughter, who is very quite and carefree, had her head smashed into a locker and a lock of her hair taken right off her head with scissors. I believe that it is important for a classroom to have diversity if children are to learn from one another. Kids from offbase help to accomplish that. This school, however, is failing to provide a safe and fair learning environment for all the children they teach.
Check out some great news about the involvement of MacArthur students in an interdisciplinary project! http://www.aacps.org/axis/currentaxis.pdf
School can use some updating but my experience so far with the staff and students have been pleasant. The students I've encountered have been articulate and friendly the staff has been helpful and responsive. The only complaint is that it's over crowded and can use some modern updates. When will be the rep of the Meade cluster schools go away!? This school is doing great things.
Absolutely a travesty that a school that should be designed with a transitioning in and out military population is designed in such a way that they purposely bus "disadvantaged" kids from outside of the base onto base to mingle and mix (really just ruin the education of) already stressed military dependent children. Liberal social experiment on the wrong group in my opinion. I could go on, but I wont.
My grades have plunged since I went to this school! I was making the A and B honor roll in 5th grade. But now, I am startinag to make C, D, and E's. The school is also filthy as heck and should be tore down! The locker rooms for gym are my highest health concern, and there is a LOT of vandalism in this school. The only positive is at least I havewgood riends.
This is a fun and exciting school. There are many smart kids willing to learn, but even more than curse.
Hello I am a fellow student of MacArthur for now....let me tell you about my last 2 years at MacArthur. I am in 8 th grade now but I will be moving schools. MacArthur has a bad rep as you can see and everything these parents, teachers and students have said is True. Never send your children to this school it is disgusting, full of ignorant kids, and has horrible environment. In 5th grade I was excited to be on my way to MacArthur so I ignored the comments and ratings 2 years later ive had many regrets. This school's students will taint your innocent children and wreck their outlook on life. Please take heed to what I am saying DO NOT SEND YOUR CHILD TO THIS SCHOOL but if you dont believe me ask to take a tour with your child and pay attention to what you hear and see. There is cursing, negative conversation, and dirty talkers also gossip EVERYWHERE. If your child is quiet, cheerful, honest, nice and/or open and you send them hear expect a negative change in them. The students here spread rumors faster than the speed of lighting. I am so glad that my mother is transferring me I am fed up. Thanks for reading hope you make the right decision :)
Mrs. Gray is unprofessional and unprepared to administer a school, oh and incompetent. Mr. Greene is who makes Mac Arthur the school that it is. The faculty morale is very low well because the "principle" has no leadership skills. Keep it Mr. Peyton, you're strict yet kids respect you.
This is my son's first year here, 6th grade. I heard nothing but bad about this school beforehand. I have been pleasantly surprised! The faculty is great, and the teachers keep him fully engaged. Only downside for me is the facility can use some updating (window coverings, bright paint) and their entry control makes me a little nervous.
As a military member coming from overseas, I may have become a bit spoiled, but I expected much more out of an on-base school. We have never been stationed at an Army post in the past, so I'm not sure if this is the norm or if the delinquents being bussed from the local, off-base communities are the problem. Either way, I would think base leadership would step in and do something. My kids are getting an education here, but it's not the right type. Prior to arriving here neither, bullying nor racism were ever an issue. Well, they've certainly become familiar with both issues in the short time we've been at Ft. Meade. As for the curriculum, they have been taking so-called "advanced" classes here but seam to have much less of a challenge than when taking standard courses at their previous DoD school. In general, there seems to be no accountability for teachers or students. In fact, it seems as though the students are running the school. If you have given this school a positive review, you must have very low standards.
MacArthur middle school has very unique attendants and they don't all get along, so conflict happens, but with the right push, we can get good grades and not fight so much. last year (2012) mr. Greene started administrating at our school and things have scince turned around. I've never felt so at home than when i'm with this diverse set of kids and in this building.
In all honesty a school is justified by its education just as much as its students. Grades 6-8 are when puberty hits, ie mood swings, accidents, etc. MacArthurs rep is 50/50 with students attitude and curriculum. The school offered as much as it could, it's up to the kids whether or not they want what it.
Worst school ever! I'm actually considering home schooling. Way to thank our nation's hero's. I still can not believe that this is a on p school. I thought we had standards...
Here are some suggestions for the admin: 1) develop a friendly demeanor with staff 2) stop playing favorites 3) work on transparency 4) if you can't figure out points 1 - 3, seek professional help.
My child and her friend were bullied from day one. Her friend's parents pulled her out of school half way through the year to home school. We are going to home school my daughter this year instead of sending her back there. The school is really overcrowded and that is the excuse that the teachers give when asked why they haven't seen some of the bullying. If the school is so crowded then maybe they should re-zone or build on more.
MacArthur middle is a different school. MacArthur has a bad rep. for bullying. To be honest there is a lot of drama, and not enough time to learn. I think this school has worsened my grades because I was an honor roll student my hole life durin elementary school, now I'm down to all d's and e's. The school is dirty, and the bathrooms are never kept up with. If I could change one thing about this school I would change the schools hygein.
My dog could be a principal at this school and do a better job! My job is smart, alert and friendly.
Macarthur Middle School get s areal horrible reputation about its education provided. There are many at least 90% of teachers here and willing to help all and any student who is willing to do the work and put forth the effort. The issue is behavior. Administration does not set a zero tolerance tone at the beginning of the year so kids realize the foolishness will not be tolerated. They are given way too many chances before any real consequences happen. This being said the parents of the students need to take responsibility as well. Setting a standard and an expectation of your child should be a MUST. A VALUE FOR EDUCATION should also be a must. Issues are complex, but the top of the hierarchy does not allow AP's to hold kids accountable and so often teachers do not feel supported nor appreciated by Parents, Students, BUT WORST of ALL our Administrators. Until there is value for education, trust amongst collegues and true support from administration we will continue to struggle.
MacArthur is definitely different... I honestly thought all 8th grade students were the same. Having a teenage student myself. They are not! The lack of respect that I saw at MacArthur is sad. Being in the building I had my own problem with a student. A referral was given, for the actions of the student at any other school the student would have been suspended, if not expelled. Not the case. It amazes me that the school doesn't even have an SRO. They need at least 2 if not more to handle all the situations. The AP's have their hands tied and have to get approval to suspend. If I were a parent this was the last school available for my child I would homeschool them.
