My son has been at Glenwood since October 2011, and we love it. What a difference. We had been in private school for K-3rd grade and my son never had a paper hung outside his classroom or never brought anything home to be hung on the fridge. He now has papers hang in the hallways at school and we have art work for out fridge. He was never able to complete his work, he was never able to get the ideas from his brain to his hands to write. I do not know how they did it, but he is completing work daily and after years of struggling this is truly a blessing and has changed out home life and our sons outlook on school. He now loves school and does not have to give up recess and lunch to work on class room work that he could not complete, or it is not sent home for us to complete along with his homework, which made for some very long frustrated evenings. We are thankful that we found Glenwood it has changed our lives.
This school is a GREAT school!! The administrator and teachers really care about their students. Your child is not a number but an individual. You can't find another affordable, individualized program like Glenwoods.
Whoever posted the review on August 29th,doesn't know what they are talking about. Glenwood is not governed by ONE administrator. Glenwood has a Board of Directors that is the decision making body of the school. Since the Board was formed over three years ago, I see much much improvement in the administration of the school. I am a very involved parent at the school and also serve on the Board of Directors.
I would have to disagree with the recent reviews below. The owner/administrator of the school is the heart of the school. She carries the school solely on her back and is trying to get the community and parents involved so she can continue her mission: to meet each individual child's needs. If you want a curriculum tailored to take the MSA then send your child to a public school. At Glenwood Country Day School your child is treated as an individual rather than a number. The way I see it is-- school should be a community where parents get involved and have a say in their child's education and that is what GCDS stands for. I have sent my children to this school for many years now and wouldn't think twice to send them elsewhere.
I understand this school has changed its name again. No matter what you name it, the bottom line is the owner/administrator is horrible. The only way I would recommend this school is if she was not in charge of all the decision making going on at the school. The school has a "tailored" curriculum for each child, but it just doesn't seem to work unless your child is learning disabled. Even then, the teacher/tutor/administrator holds that against your child to keep them back and constantly repeats the same curriculum year after year. It was very disappointing to be promised one thing and then given another.
Despite this school being advertised as affordable, customizing the curriculum to suit your child's pace and a small environment, it just doesn't work in the current set-up. The school is too small to afford quality teachers that will put up with the administration's micro-managing and the owner of the school always requires more from her parents: more volunteering, more money and more tutoring expenses. We had our child there too long, but the early elem. school years were okay. Our child learned to read very well. However, there was a big lack in following the state curriculum and our child was not prepared for the MSA's when we finally put them in public school. Overall, this school has a lot of needs - number one being a new administrator that knows how to deal with adults and doesn't force you into paying her for more tutoring that is unnecessary and a standard curriculum that is actually followed. There a still a lot of kinks to get out before this a great or even good school!
Glenwood Country Day School - specifically the preschool - had wonderful teachers for the academic year '10-11, but yet again has been unable to retain teachers more than one year (and late hiring in the summer for '11-12 makes one wonder about the upcoming school year). They blame it on 'standard teacher turnover', but in fact the administration is atrocious, teachers have many complaints, there is very poor leadership by the head of school and preschool Director (which is evident on many levels), and there are many other concerns. While the mission is commendable, there are many inconsistencies in delivering. Buyer beware.
Glenwood Country Day School has an amazing set of teachers, however, their administration is completely terrible. I have talked to other parents and they seem to be naive about how the head of the school runs the school. While your child is around less children, many of these kids have diabilities, and it is very hard for the teachers to be one-on-one with the other students. Finally, the teacher ratio is not 1:7, it's more of 1 to 15. There's only 6 teachers. Not 14.
The best private school for our child! I can't say enough about the education my son gets here. The curriculum is setup to your child's specific needs and the results were outstanding. My son went from falling behind in his grade to one of the top performers. The small class sizes really give him the individual attention he lacked in public school. You must check it out!
I feel so fortunate to have found Glenwood Country School! Our son was struggling and falling behind in public school, and hated going to class more and more every week. I won't say that he now loves going to school (because he still has to do the work :), but we no longer hear him start complaining Sunday morning about having to go to school the next day. The teachers really understand his needs and clearly care about both his academic and social progress. I'd be willing to pay more to receive the quality education and support Glenwood provides - thank goodness I don't have to!
