Fantastic school! The new principal is very hands on, all the staff that we've interacted with thus far are just amazing. I am constantly shocked by the involvement of the parents and community - the parents are extremely involved. My children are blessed to have such a wonderful school to attend!
Great new principal this year who is involved, kind, and approachable. Very nice turn of events!
Bushy Park will have a new principal in the 2012/13 shool year. The teachers are amazing - they have a lot of support from the parents the school and the community, the parents are extremely involved.
This is an excellent elementary school. If your child is gifted this school has great GT Programs to offer, also the teachers are vey nice and cooperative. We love Bush Park!
I am currently a seventh grade student at Glenwood Middle School and I found that Bushy Park played a big role in helping me get ready for middle school. My brother goes to Bushy and he loves it!
I left Bushy Park this year, and I'm feeling well and prepared for a fresh start in Middle School. The teachers, principal, and VP are very encouraging. The programs BPES has are great, and I encourage future BPES students to participate in them.
This is my son's first year at Bushy Park and the 1st grade teachers and staff have been wonderful getting him adjusted to 'real' school.
i just graduated from it and I knew i was prepared when I left, and I recommend this school for the best education you can get.
We are parents of a 2nd & 5th frader at BP. We are extremely pleased with the challenging curriculum opportunities and exceptional extracurricular activities, and School PTA/Parent involvement! The new school is State of The Art for a public school (and light years ahead of the old, smaller 'open classroom' facility it replaced). We were also extremely pleased with the Principal and staff in how they handled an issue our 2nd grader was having. I grew up in Howard County and know the exceptional standards that the County has created and has to live up to. Maybe I'm a 'softie' (which my colleagues may suggest is impossible!), but we could not be more pleased with the school, community, and quality of life in Glenwood!
After 4 years at a private school in Ellicott City, we were delighted with our daughter's math and language arts teachers, violen instruction, and the handling of a situation in the beginning of the school year by the principal. While the school does focus on how to increase standardized test scores throughout the year, the learning materials as well as the staff and students create an environment for success.
We have a child in 1st grade and so far are not impressed with this school. The curriculum is unimaginative and uninspiring. The principal seems preoccupied with her reputation and the schools ranking, whether or not the students are getting the most nourishing education seems to be secondary. The teachers and principal are slow to identify and communicate learning issues/problems and reluctant to adapt to help. If your kid is not disruptive but could benefit from a little additional help/attention you re out of luck. For the most part the kids at Bushy Park would perform well, but instead of taking advantage of the well prepared population to introduce innovate and inspiring teaching opportunities they chose to teach to the standardized tests using endless reams of dittos. We came from the Worthington School in Ellicott City and found it to be a much more nurturing environment.
We love Bushy Park! The teachers are great, the PTA is organized and there are lots of extra curricular activities for the kids. We are extremely happy with the programs and the quality of edcuation that our kids are getting. Thanks everyone!
How sad that the previous two reviewers seem to have a vendetta against the school/principal. The school is overcrowded as of 2005 but a brand new larger one is being built next door for 2008. I have a k and 1st grader;I think it's top notch with VERY involved parents. BP is in the top 10 or 15 elementaries in the state! What more can you ask?! The teachers and 'new' and very efficient and gracious principal(she was the VP for years before)are struggling with a 30 year old facility built to old hippie standards of the failed 'classrooms without walls' structure so it's very tight but they are doing GREAT in test scores and everything else regardless. The PTA is probably one of the best in the state. I find it scholastically challenging and give it a B+/A-. RECC is EXCELLENT.*WARNING...BOUNDARY LINES CHANGING IN 2006/7!
I am a new parent to Bushy Park with one child in Pre-K and one in Kindergarten. My preschooler loves school and his teachers. I have nothing but praise for the REC department. The school is very overcrowded. It is disappointing, for example, that kindergarteners do not get the use of the gymnasium and music room. That's what kindergarten is all about; learning through play. I feel the kindergarten curriculum could be a lot more creative and interesting. Also, in our case, I don't feel individual learning styles are taken into account and addressed. I have to agree with the previous reviewer; the school does have a somewhat cold atmosphere. The principal had a greater presence in the beginning of the year. I don't get the feeling that she knows the students very well. However, I could not find evidence to falling test scores.
