Want to improve this school’s profile? You can!

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a parent or community member, you can share what you know with other families by writing a review or answering a few questions about what the school offers. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.

Greenspring Montessori: There is something wrong with your child, they can't learn. Parents: Seek professional help, have the child tested. Nothing out of the ordinary. Greenspring Montessori: There is something wrong with your child, they can't learn. Parents: Not a single professional outside the school has found a learning issue. Greenspring Montessori: There is something wrong with your child, they can't learn. Parents: New school Child: Leading class participation, no issues, no homework problems, teachers consider the child to be more mature than classmates. Parents conclusion: Montessori has a problem. Every child is unique, but if they can't learn here, they are the problem. There are some very good teachers at this school, but for the most part leadership can't get past the righteousness of Montessori being the best and most successful teaching method on the planet and come to terms with the simple idea that not all children are the same. Ironic.

My daughter has benefited so much from the kind teachers, staff and the Montessori style of education. She loves going to school every day and what more could a parent ask?

My daughter is finishing her first year in the Children's House Spanish immersion class. While visiting her grandparents, she recently said "My teachers love their kids." A simple statement, but it meant the world to me, to know she spends her days where she feels loved and secure. I love the sense of community. Even aides from other classrooms know my daughter from the carline, and even her little brother (who is not yet a student there). Everyone is friendly and approachable and my daughter loves her school and all of her friends. In terms of improvement, we have struggled with communication in terms of events or activities, especially in the upper elementary where my stepson attends. As a split household, there has been some struggle with keeping every parent in the loop. Even with my daughter's teacher, it helps to be proactive in contacting them. However, I truly feel that each teacher I have met and especially the head of school, Ms. Balis, genuinely cares about the well-being of each child and is committed to providing them with an excellent education. I highly recommend this school and its philosophy to other parents.

Our daughter will be starting in the Children's House at Greenspring Montessori School this fall. We feel strongly that the Montessori approach is the best fit for our daughter. We have been well taken care of through each step of the Admissions process, from our first visit to the school through the enrollment process. We loved the prospective parent education workshops (we are already implementing some of these Montessori techniques at home!) and the Welcome Playdate for new students was a wonderful way to start building a sense of community for new families. We have been treated with professionalism and warmth every step of the way. We can't wait for the new school year to start!

My child is completing her 3rd year at Greenspring Montessori School and will be going on to the lower elementary class here next year. We have been pleased with the kindness, efficiency and professionalism of the staff at all levels. I continue to be amazed by the guide's true understanding of my child and her academic and social capabilities - and needs. The new head of school has earned my support by taking a good school and pushing it to be better. We have seen improvements in infrastructure, teaching standards, curriculum alignment, faculty support, parent education, and communication with families. As the school settles into these rapid changes, we will hold the five star review for the coming year. I would and do recommend this school.

I recently applied for admission for my 2 year old. I am appalled by the Director's of Admissions communication manner. She takes four days to respond to an email and does not return voice mails. If that is the way the door keeper communicates, what can I expect from teachers and other staff? I will never know anything about how my child is doing behind the school's doors. She will never go there. That was a bad choice. I regret paying the $75 application fee.

Both of my children have attended Greenspring Montessori. My older son completed the three year Children's House cycle, while my younger son started in the Toddler Program and is now in his first year of the Children's House. With both children, we have had overwhelmingly positive experiences. The teachers are nurturing, encouraging, and very much in tune with the children. They consistently refresh classroom materials so that there is always something new for the children to explore. And the faculty have always been very responsive to any questions or concerns we have had. We have also taken advantage of extracurricular activities, such as the before/after school Discovery Program, story time, art classes, and yoga instruction. My children have thoroughly enjoyed all of them. I would recommend this school without hesitation.

As a previous post stated, many CURRENT students are being asked to leave because they don't fit the ideal Montessori student, or at least not for this school. This is not in the spirit of what Maria Montessori envisioned for her schools. My child is one of the students being pushed out and we have been treated pretty poorly by the administration. Luckily, my child is bright enough to have learned in the less than optimal classroom conditions and I'm positive he will thrive at a school where he is really wanted and where the administration and teachers embrace students with diverse learning styles. If a true nurturing environment is what you are seeking, you would do much better elsewhere.

Hello! I am writing this review both as the parent of 2 happy children who have attended the school and because I am the school s library media specialist. I want to clear up some misinformation in a prior review. NO items are being removed from the library. In fact, we house a majority of the titles listed in the last post and will encourage our students to continue to enjoy them! We do intend to add more titles for our students aged 5 and younger that have a realistic or nonfiction focus. This is because our Montessori practice and pediatric research encourage us to expose them to things they can see happening in the world around them. There will always be a place for rich literature of all types in our collection. At age 5, children start a sensitive period for imagination and crave imaginative literature and we provide it! Much love, collaboration, research and intellect has gone into building our media center and it is our hope to continue expanding on this collection to best suit the needs of our growing community. Best wishes to all!

Greenspring Montessori is an amazing fit for our 6-year old. She started in the Toddler program at age 2 and was reading by age 4. The self-directed and holistic learning environment, with thoughtful teacher direction and guidance, is a perfect fit for our self-motivated learner. The teachers truly love and respect the children and it is a wonderful, close community.

While a majority of the students are in the primary program, my child is in the middle school program. The middle school has been a disappointment. Many parents have hired tutors and many students are not being accepted at schools for the following year. The administration has not responded to parents' requests to modify the model to help the students get ready for a traditional high school experience. In fact, it has decided to implement a more radical Montessori model and is alienating many long time Montessori families. They are now turning away CURRENT students because they have deemed those students as not suitable for Montessori. It's a shame. Enrollment is down, teachers are upset by new library policies, and parents are choosing other more stable schools for their children to attend. My teacher rating below is for the middle school. The middle school will have it's 4th new teacher in 4 years starting in 2014.

We have had an amazing experience with this school. Our daughter is in 5th grade. Her teachers have been wonderful. The school cares and respects the child. The teachers and administration are top notch. There was a new head of school that came 2 years ago and she has turned the school around. We couldn't be happier. Our daughter has had incredible and thoughtful lessons. The curriculum is top notch and all geared toward life. Our daughter is better prepared for the future having gone to this school. Thank you!

Our two year old started Greenspring Montessori this year. We love it. His teachers are wonderful. He has grown so much over the year- has mastered so many important skills (from peeling eggs to dusting to playing for long periods). It is a warm, loving environment that above all respects each and every little one. We look forward to his experience in the children's house next year. There is something very special about the school - we are thrilled to be a part of the community.

Greenspring Montessori School 'celebrates and nurtures each child's intrinsic desire to learn'. It offers a child centered approach to education that I think Maria, herself, would be proud of! The teachers are loving and kind. The (new) head of school is involved, welcoming and, in 2 short years, has done a great job of turning the school around, building enrollment, and bringing the community back to Montessori! She knows everyone's name! The student work is challenging and preparatory. Greenspring Montessori has been a second home to my family for well over a decade and will always hold a special place in our hearts!

Greenspring Montessori has been a great fit for our 3-year-old. The Spanish Immersion program has been extremely beneficial for reinforcing the Spanish we speak at home. The teachers are helpful and kind and provide lessons to each child at the right time. They encourage the child to be pro-active and help offer a wide array of choices to develop different skills. There is learning in their play. This is not "daycare", it's an investment in the future.

Admitted my kid with lots of hopes but it was shattered. The management wanted to admit the kid but the class teacher so called Guide didn't want the extra burden of adding one additional kid to the class. Right from the day one the guide had a very unpleasant attitude as if they are doing a free service they don't want our kid and management forced over them to have in their class. Teacher plays the most important role in kids life and one teacher with wrong attitude can do a great deal of damage. They have a great montessori program but I request the management to have right people to support it. I strongly don't recommend this school not worth the money you pay.

Too many changes going on at the school and very poor communication. One lower elementary classroom has had 3 different sets of teachers in 6 months which is tough on the children who find change difficult. We have not found the school to be very supportive of special needs.

Greenspring Montessori, formerly The Montessori School, is an amazing learning environment for both of my children. Children work at their own pace, rather than a one size fits all approach to learning. Children get to make some choices about the different academic material they want to study each day. This freedom of choice allows the children to be more independent, and they are more engaged in their own learning experiences than in a traditional school setting. Children have the opportunity to do many hands-on activities to explore Science, Math, English, Art, Music, Language, and Technology in a way that helps them understand and master these subjects. Being at Greenspring Montessori has helped my children love to learn, and that is truly priceless.

A fantastic education while fostering independence, creativity, and development of the whole Child. The teachers are well trained with extensive experience in Education. The school is being led by a visionary leader who puts forth 110% in her efforts to improve the school while implementing a solid Montessori curriculum.

We have really loved being a part of this school community. The Montessori method is amazing! It really is about meeting the needs of each child as an individual. The teachers have made such a tremendous effort to know and understand my daughter. My daughter has been so happy coming to school, and brings home such a rich variety of knowledge... and inspiration! She talked about her teachers and friends all summer long. There is lots of communication home, and we have felt like such a part of the community here.

We've had our son at Montessori since the Toddler program (he's now 7 and a rising 2nd grader). It's been a fantastic educational environment for him to grow and pursue his passions. He's reading and doing math far above his level and the Montessori methods allow for more individualized learning tracks. The summer camp is also excellent. The new head of school (arrived in 2012) has been very proactive and enacting improvements to the faculty, extracurricular programs and school grounds, which needed it.

I have a six year old who has attended Montessori since he was three years old. We have had an unparalleled experience (and we have three other children who have attended other independent schools in the area) . Montessori is allowing my son to develop to the fullest that he can. He is provided with a purposeful, thoughtful way of learning and he is expected to take an active role in discovering how he learns best and how to navigate challenges he encounters as he learns (and all of this at 6 years old!). Montessori provides a family environment in which support, encouragement, and nurturing facilitate the learning experience. My son embraces the Montessori method because the teachers and staff live the method and make it specific through day to day activities. Teachers and staff reinforce values such as kindness, grace, respect for others and the environment through purposeful class discussion and daily activities. Everyone who works at Montessori seems to enjoy what they do and they truly love the students. Staff receives strong support from well prepared, experienced commited leadership Great for parents who want their children to be independent learners and thinkers.

I have two children who attend The Montessori School in the lower elementary. I feel so fortunate to be able to provide my son and daughter with such a warm, engaging learning environment. The children at Montessori develop a wonderful sense of independence, time management, self confidence, ownership and repect for themselves, those around them and their community/ environment. Children are able to progress at their own pace and the teachers do an excellent job of providing each child with individual as well as group lessons. The Montessori method provides many tangible ways of learning that allow children to learn concepts on such a deeper level than many traditional methods, which seems to be beneficial for retention of concepts over time, rather than memorization. The Montessori School makes learning fun and children love attending school each day!

Both of my sons attended the Montessori School through middle school. One is now a college freshman and the other just started high school. I credit Montessori with teaching them how to be students who are responsbile for their own learning and giving them the skills to organize their work, participate in class, and communicate effectively with their teachers. They left Montessori with the skills and attitudes that have brought them academic success. Best part for the parents - we have never had "homework battles." They own it!

MAGNIFICENT!! I have two children that have attended The Montessori School since they were of toddler age, and I can only speak volumes for the incredible experience we have had thus far! Each of my children has had a different set of teachers and I found this to be very valuable for them as well as myself. From the get go, their toddler teachers were every bit loving, nurturing and encouraging of the blossoming person they held in their possession for a few hours a day. Each day held something special for them and it was this incredible foundation that has molded their self confidence and independence in the most positive fashion. Progressing into primary was seamless and they are eager to attend school each and every day. Both of my children are now in classrooms that truly reflect their personalities and those teachers have managed to channel the best possible positive energy out of them. Challenges are presented to the kids in a variety of ways to foster their sense of mastery. This school offers so much in an academic and specialty capacity! Hard to imagine being anywhere else but in the loving care of the amazing faculty and staff at The Montessori School!!

HORRIBLE. The kids watch TV in the camps. DO NOT PUT YOUR KID IN CAMP HERE. My daughter, in the Montessori Camp watched the Little Mermaid and my son in a different program, the Outdoors and Art Camp watched Toy Story. WHY? Because "it's hot." Of course it's hot! It's summer camp! Surely someone must exist that has access to books or an imagination over there! I paid $600 for two weeks of TV camp! I'm livid.

My children have been at the Montessori School since they were 3 years old. What a wonderful experience. One of my children has been through the middle school program and it is a great experience. The curriculum is self directed and really teaches your child accountability, responsibility, communication and getting along with peers. There are also several quite unique learning opportunities which my child loved. We have had many teachers over the years and although they vary in teaching style and personality, they were all nurturing and open minded.Yes, there may not be many extra curricular programs, but it depends how important that is to you.

This truly is one of the great schools in Baltimore. The education my son received was top notch. He attended the Montessori School preschool through middle school. His teachers were amazing and the facilities were beautiful. The experience he had in the middle school were some of the best he had at Montessori. The smaller class size enabled him to get all the attention he needed to be successful. He has become a confident, self motivated and independent student. Montessori has given him a love of learning which I don't think he would have received anywhere else. He leaves Montessori well prepared and ready to face the challenges of the future.

My daughter has been at Montessori since she was two and we couldn't be happier! She is now in the upper elementary program and is thriving. She loves going to school every day, and is genuinely excited about the prospect of transitioning into the middle school program next year. Academically, it is a great fit for her. She has learned that there are no boundaries for what she can learn and achieve. Every one of the teachers she has had over the years has been nurturing and encouraging. I wish I could have attended a school like Montessori.

My children found the school as good to excellent however I would agree that major changes need to be implemented. The 4th-6th grade experience was excellent however the extracurricular activiites were quite lacking. The Middle School is very self-directed, which is fine for some children but a disaster for others. Some of the teachers were excellent, others were mediocre at best. The administration seems very indifferent to any parent input which is very sad.

The Montessori School has been a great learning experience for both my Son and I. However, this school does need many changes to their facilities and staff. Being an old dairy farm, the classrooms have been updated poorly and are falling apart. Many of the staff members have been there since the school opened, and like one of the reviewers said, are narrow-minded. This school isn't any where as good as the other private schools in the area. Even though it has the excellent montessori curriculum, the curriculum does not suit middle school. Towards the end, my son got very tired of being told what to do like a little child, and we decided we needed to move on to a better school. This school has the potential of having an excellent program, but the staff and head of school are unwilling to hear the students and parents.

The worst nightmare that a parent and a child can go through. Old fasion, stiff minded, obssessed teachers. No happiness. Emotionless, not chalenging environment. You want to think that your child learned something, practically she just repeating some nonsence words without real understanding of the meaning. So much arrogance for so little to offer. A constant pain and stress. I had to brib my child everyday to go to school and always being critisized and attacked by teacher. I changed the school and she loves to go to the new school. Do not send your kids there, you and your child will be psycotic in the end.

It amazes me how knowledgeable my 5 year old daughter has become while attending The Montessori School. She is now going into her third year, and my son will begin the toddler program this fall. I feel secure in knowing that they are in a safe and loving environment. The teachers are wonderful and encourage the children to be independent and respectful of others. In this type of atmosphere my daughter's curiosity is nurtured and she looks forward going to school every day and discussing what she has learned when the day is over. She even teaches me a thing or two! I am very grateful and intend to continue both of my children's education at Montessori through middle school.

I found this school for my 5th grader O.k. There were no athletic teams, school functions were horrible! no clubs, and extra curricular activities were not that great either. Academics were O.K. sometimes, my 5th grader would come home crying because of social problems from other students, and that wasn't good! andI feel this school focuses on the small children and not the older children. That's why the school functons are not that good. I would recommend another school for your child. This school I found o.k., and now my child is in another school.
