The school seems really attentive to students with special needs, but doesn't seem to push the smarter students to grow beyond state curriculum. I think the playground is too close to the main road and it would be safer to put up a better division to keep the children safe.

My kid has mild learning & physical disabilities and Olney ES has not only accommodated him but also allowed him to excel in a few areas he does well. Twice a year, the student counseler, with her team meets with us and we come up with a go forward plan for the next 6 months. Students are challenged with take home problems although I wish the homework was a little more. I hope the school gets BAR-T (aftercare program) soon.

Olney Elementary is a great school. The parents are very involved and it is a true community oriented environment.

Olney Elementary has a superb, dedicated faculty. Teachers go the extra mile to communicate with parents. The PTA heads up Science Fairs and Clubs, a chess club, Renaissance arts programs and award ceremonies, athletic programs, and family fun nights. Newletters keeping parents informed are issued weekly; twice as often as most schools. The library is bright, open and well stocked. The computer:student ratio is the lowest allowed by the county despite a recent influx of students thanks to the PTA's strong support.

About the tests

In 2013-2014 Maryland used the Maryland School Assessment (MSA) to test students in grades 3 through 8 in reading and math, and grades 5 and 8 in science. The MSA is a standards-based test, which means it measures how well students are mastering specific skills defined for each grade by the state of Maryland.
