INTERMEDIATE

Want to improve this school’s profile? You can!

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a parent or community member, you can share what you know with other families by writing a review or answering a few questions about what the school offers. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.

St. Columba School is a great school. They have a caring, dedicated, and nurturing staff and faculty. No they aren't perfect, but they do strive to be the best and do the best for our children. Whats wrong with being old school, it helps make children well rounded adults. They are installing air conditioning this summer, which they fund-raised for all this year. They have a great resource teacher and assistant and have started a talented and gifted program this year. All schools are not a perfect fit for all children, it's the parents job to find the right school , as we all know some people are not that easy to please. Check us out we just might be the right school for you.

GREAT school with qualified, caring, and nurturing teachers!! As a St. Columba (Oxon Hill, MD) parent I was quite pleased with the quality and level of education my child received. She started in Kindergarten, graduated with honors, accepted to ALL of the high schools she applied to, and received scholarships! [I have another one at the school now!] The teachers at STC CARE about their students, are DEDICATED to the students and the profession, WORK HARD to ensure the kids are prepared for high school, and make themselves AVAILABLE to parents when issues arise. I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND St. Columba.

Love the school! There is a reason why STC has been pumping out GREAT MINDS for over 50 years -- DEDICATED Teachers!!

The way the teachers teach is horrible! It is so old school and the kids are behind compared to other schools. There is no air so the kids suffer when it's hot. And the kids are out of control!!!!!!

Despite other ratings regarding technology, i feel that i get emails from the school at least 3 times a week, once from the principal, and at least twice from the teacher. As for other tech savvy tools, i would rather the children learn how to do things manually through verbal interaction. In this day and age, technology changes so fast, the operating system or the "next big thing" will be obsolete by the time they need it in the "real world". Other luxuries such as air conditioning...I have never experienced in school air conditioning except for one or two classes, if i was lucky, so i dont get what the big deal is. They have provisions in place for extreme heat and that's what matters. Teachers are very involved and even when its a small behavioral issue, i've been contacted before it turns in to a bigger issue. They expect parent involvement and reward it. If you dont attend HSA meetings or are not involved, you'll find yourself behind. I hear stories of low attendance during HSA meetings. St Columba has one every month and I've never seen less than 100 people at any given meeting. You get out what you put in. I am extremely happy with St Columba.

This school may not have all the fundings for the high tech programs (since when was FB membership and email use a measure of a good school), but I was looking for a school that delivered excellent academics and a close knit caring family atmosphere. I got it at St. Columba bar none. It takes a while to get used to all the procedures and rules/regulations, but the staff and faculty all love the children and think of their best interest in all situations (despite their limited budget). It promotes high acadamics, discipline, and structure. Don't expect to just drop off your kid and let the school do the rest. They expect parents to be very active. Expect to be very active on a daily basis (esp. homework). My child loves it here and has threatened to never talk to me again if I ever think about switching her so I'm hoping we don't have to relocate. To address the A/C situation, they are fundraising like crazy for this. It's an expensive venture. And regarding the technology, call me old fashioned, but I can provide all that at home. My child is advanced in all areas and happily goes to school everyday. Consider St. Columba and decide for yourself.

A school that has no programs for kids who are falling behind in reading, No programs for kids who are advanced either. You get the same generic education no matter what, but wait they have a resource teacher who does what ??? No one knows or knows who she is. This school took 50 years to get on facebook, 49 years to get a web page that works, 49 years to start using email. The principal said in the home and school meeting about the email "baby steps". It is not that difficult send an email. Not the school for me anymore. I suggest you do your own research and find out the truth.

There are a lot of things going wrong with this school, no air conditioning, no control in the classrooms, Principal who is afraid of technology and teachers who are not certified. If you send a teacher a email, they respond by writing in the planner because they are so far back technology wise. The parents fight against the school to try and make it better, but it is excuse after excuse and no way forward.

I believe this school is acceptable, but the students are arrogant, self-important, and just PLAIN RUDE. Very good education, but with the students, laughing at the teachers, spreading gossip around, and talking during class, it was very hard to concentrate. I was even harassed for being "smart" I don't recommend you enrolling your child here, I think it was a BIG mistake to go there. -A student

Schools are like jeans or shoes. Sometimes you put them on and you never want to take them off, and sometimes you realize they aren't a good fit. For us, St. Columba has been a very good fit. Overall our experience over the past 15 years has been a very good one. There have been some bumps and the occasional not-great experiences (since no place is perfect), but we have found that the teachers are genuinely interested in the children and in helping them grow academically, socially, and in faith. The principal works hard to be fair and evenhanded with discipline issues and we have found the students to be well-behaved and organized (mostly - they are kids!) The preparation for high school is very good indeed. If you don't attend the church or if the children don't play on the sports teams, it can be difficult to get to know the other families very well (our only real negative).

I love St. Columba School because of the excellent education that it provides to all its students. I know this first hand since I am a former volunteer at this school and observed the teachers and staff in action.

Sadly, our experience at this school has been the exact opposite of the previous reviewers. Our child has hated her time at St Columba, as have we. Upon visiting we were led to think that the experince would be well-rounded, warm & nurturing...it has NOT been that at all! The principal is not approachable, and when we appraoched her about a certain subject that was a concern for us, she was very curt and stand-offish. And it was no small issue for us or our child. The curriculum is rigourous, which would not be an issue except that my child is terrified of messing up. Not what one wants in someone so young with a long school career ahead. We believe that these early years are what shapes the way ahead. The parents also tend to be very cliquey. We will not be returning for a 2nd year!!

St. Columba is a diverse community that is steeped in academics and a healthy spiritual foundation. Our children leave with a strong sense of self and morality. They are able to compete at any Independent or Catholic High School. St. Columba ready your kids for the culturally diverse world.

It's the best school this side of heaven! I have been a parent for 11 years and never seen anything like the love, leadership, commitment, integrity, and nuturing provided by the faculty to the students. I am not catholic but the values and morals taught daily are fantastic. There is nothing in my humbleopinion like a St. Columba Catholic education. The young women and men that are produced from our school go on to do be outstanding individuals, well grounded in christian roots, and love of God and self.

Our school is the best school ever. Our staff is the most patient and attentive staff, ever!! Our kids excel beyond expectation in high school and college. Our kids love coming to school everyday. They want to be here and absolutely don't want to miss a day. Our Home and Association is strong and supportive. Our sports and music program is also strong and the kids are very dedicated. I could go on about our school family but I will end it here. We love St. Columba!!!

St Columba has established a values code which is displayed throughout the school as well as my child's bulletin board in her room. They hold the kids accountable and this will transfer into their older years. This is a great institution

Our five year old entered kindergarten this year (2008) and so far we can attest that St. Columba is truly a Great School. His teacher provides a lot of feedback and encourages him to his best. It is the most organized school we have ever seen. There is strong sense of family that permeates throughout the school. More important than our view of the school is our son's... he absolutely loves it.

I have two children at St. Columba. The school provides a nurturing, value centered environment. The teachers are excellent and well trained. The K-8 environment is used to full advantage with the upper wing being given more and more responsibility. This is unlike a large middle school where the children can become lost. The teachers are available and communicate readily with the parents. The teachers are an integral part of the aftercare program and are available to help the children with their homework after school. I would whole heartedly recommend this school for any child. Our children have grown steadily in their Christian faith at St. Columba. The school is very well organized and supported by the parish and families.

My daughter is entering her third year at St. Columba. The principal is as best as they come. The teachers are top notch. St. Columba is very family oriented. There is lots of parent involvement. I am pleased that they have extra activities after school as well as a great library. My daughter is doing much better since coming here. I will continue to keep her until the long hall.

My son is entering his second year at St. Columba. I have been pleased thus far with his Academics as well as his social growth. The teachers are stern yet caring and concerned. St. Columba has a very high percentage of parental involement. There is truly a family environment there. I plan to keep my son a St. Columba through the 8th grade and can't wait for my daughter to start Kindergarden next year. I've been very pleased w/the teachers and principal at St. Columba.

St. Columba is a wonderful school with great teachers, staff and parent involvement. The learning environment is caring, orderly, disciplined and it shows in the students' knowledge and behavior. My child has been there since the first grade and I intend to keep my child there until the eighth grade.

St Columba prepared both my children for High School and life. The teachers and staff care about each child. The Principal, a former 1st grade teacher is first rate. Both children went to very highly rated high school, where they have done well. Music department has sent kids to high school with music scholarships, and soccer program has sent kids to Division 1 colleges. I still volunteer there, because basically they are still family.

A caring, loving environment from before care thru the academic day to after care. The children 'learn a lot about a lot'. With some sports you get a well rounded, social student fully prepared for High School.
