This school is awesome! I have 4 children, 2 who are currently enrolled and 2 who will enroll. I had heard some information that scared me about this school. However, the principal is outstanding, the staff are friendly and caring, and the students love learning. Positive behavior is encouraged through the ROAR program, students are grouped flexibly and based on need, and teachers work hard to meet the needs of the students while teaching the curriculum. Test scores have improved a great bit too :)

Thurmont Elementary is one of the Catoctin Feeder Schools in the Frederick County Md School District. This is to say that the students in Thurmont Elementary School, (TES), will eventually move on to Thurmont Middle School and Catoctin High School. I have had 4 children in this school. Each one has had different learning styles and needs. Each one has recieved a quality education. TES rates high within the school district in parent volunteer hours and involvement. Teachers and faculity know each of the children by name, both the quiet unassuming ones, and the loud bostrous ones. The principal is understanding and fair, the teachers work with parents to help the children learn. Character Counts programs are intergrated into the school activities. There is some problem with bullying, but this is being addressed, starting at the primary level, and also in TES itself, with more awareness and learning programs.

About the tests

In 2011-2012 Maryland used the Maryland School Assessment (MSA) to test students in grades 3 through 8 in reading and math, and grades 5 and 8 in science.
