We've been here for two years and this school stands head and shoulder above the previous schools our kids attended. The magnet program is great and the intergration of technology in the classroom really engages the kids.
We have had 2 of our kids at Williamsport Elementary for the past 7 years and will continue to be at the school for a few more with our younger 2 children. The facility itself is very nice and very modern since being renovated a few years back. Most of the teachers have been great, especially those in the magnet program. The encore teachers (art, music, PE, media etc) all really do a fantastic job as well, especially with the extracurricular activities such chorus and the annual PE/gymnastics show. The only area I see as in need of improvement is the PTA. There does not seem to be much going on in that area as far as after school and evening activities for the students compared to a few years ago. Otherwise, WES is a great school, probably one of the best in the county.
My child had a great year last year when she was in the 3rd grade. The teachers were pleasant and always kept the parents informed. The gym, music, media and art teachers are wonderful also. There is no welcoming feeling when you walk into the school, nor is the secretary helpful. The principle and asst.principle seem to be sensitive to each student and are very active in school activites. On the other hand the fourth grade teacher that is my daughter has is very hard core, rude toward the students, but sure tries to put on a good show for the parents
Having just moved to the area and only experiencing 6 months at Williamsport Elementary School my feeling is that it is above and beyond the school we came from, Greenwood in Montgomery County, MD. There are so many student activities and the teachers care and the principal cares. Very Very Good. I hope it continues to be this way.
This is a wonderful school, and Carolyn Moore, the principal, is absolutely terrific. The teachers and the PTA make a great team - the parents are kept 'in the loop' about what is going on in the building and there are so many different things available for the students (a garden club, PE programs, after school chorus, etc.) If you are a working parent, you will appreciate that the YMCA has before and after school care provided at the school and I think the cost is reasonable. It just seems that this school and community in general care very deeply about their kids' education. If you are considering moving into the Washington County/Hagerstown area, I would suggest looking into the Williamsport schools first.
