This year my child will get programs as part of the extended day program that sound exciting: TAEKWONDO, Dance, Fitness, Puppetry, Hooping, Swimming, Readers Theater, Math Games and Chorus.

My daughter went to Newton School from Kindergarten to third grade. Overall, it's a great little school. As a parent you're known personally by the staff, your phone calls are always returned and you're welcome in the school at anytime. My daughter adored all her teachers every year and loved the administrative receptionist (me too). Like anything worth it's salt, Newton School could make some improvements. My critique involves #1 The All All School Meetings which are poorly orchestrated from seating arrangements to time management to performances. #2 The parent pick up situation outside is a nitemare #3 The food is awful #4 There was a head lice break out every single year . The last year she was there she wore a tight braid or pony tail with lavender essential oil. I feel the school district and Newton missed opportunities to thoroughly educate children and PARENTS on how to check for head lice and how to properly remove them. Newton is a great little school, I only wish it could accommodate 4th and 5th graders because my daughter is already hating the Middle School.

My child attends this school, and I think he gets more opputunities here than most other schools in terms of non academic classes such as art, technology, drumming, sign language, just to name a few. They really encourage students to challenge themselves and excel. the staff here are committed to working with each child's abilities and improving all students individually. Class sizes are not large. there are less than 20 students in my sons class and when in Kindergarten there were about 15. the teachers are friendly, and even though they work longer days than most other teachers (newton is an Extended Learning time school) they always seem to have a smile on their face.

Providing your child is perfect, then it is a great school. But for someone like my son with severe ADHD and behavioral problems, the school is unprofessional, unprepared and unwilling to do their part. My son was amazing in PreK, in Easthampton and Greenfield. Then he started Newton and its been horrible. To the point where the principle pretty much forced me to putting my son into a behavioral hospital. He ended up missing 3 weeks of school and when he returned he was put into Strides (a decent program) and at 8am, they were still discussing who was going to be there with him. We went through several aids and it tooks months to find one appropriate. They do not monitor the websites our children go on. I could go on for weeks describing what we went through and we are only 1/2 way through the year.

My daughter and son both attend Newton School. It's a unique school that has embraced the extended day program and offered great programs such as Strings for Kids (violin), TaeKwonDo (which helps with discipline, listening skills and focus), sign language, dance - these are just to name a few. The staff are dedicated to the students and it's a nurturing environment. The size of the school is a good fit for younger elementary students.

I am the parent of a Newton School Kindergartener. I could not be more pleased with the school and the staff. The consistant attention to detail and effort made by the staff to alwya provide a safe learning environment for the children is with out a doubt top notch. They concentrate on teaching the children respect and courtesy and expect no less than that from each student...they always make time for parents with any concern. I can not say enough about how happy I am that my daughter attends this school!

Newton Elementary is just off the highway and is a warm, delightful elementary school. The staff are terrific and they have a state grant for extra day enrichment. They are offering strings and dance. The faculty is terrific.

About the tests

In 2012-2013 Massachusetts used the Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System (MCAS) to test students in grades 3 though 8 and 10 in English language arts and math and in grades 5, 8, and 10 in science. The grade 10 MCAS is a high school graduation requirement. The MCAS is a standards-based test, which means it measures specific skills defined for each grade by the state of Massachusetts. The goal is for all students to score at or above proficient on the test.

What is the GreatSchools Rating?

The GreatSchools rating is a simple tool for parents to compare schools based on test scores, student academic growth, and college readiness. It compares schools across the state, where the highest rated schools in the state are designated as “Above Average” and the lowest “Below Average.” It is designed to be a starting point to help parents make baseline comparisons. We always advise parents to visit the school and consider other information on school performance and programs, as well as consider their child's and family's needs as part of the school selection process.
