Marblehead High School

I'm a sophomore here and everything is great. I have no complaints. If your kid has too much homework, why not have him or her ask for help from teachers?

MHS is a very good school. It has a broad range of offerings supporting all students. As a public high school it MUST provide appropriate opportunity for all levels of skill and ability, taught by mostly solid teachers. The extra-curriculars are solid. It's got jocks, artists, and just regular kids. There is a fair amount of homework - not as much as the very top public/private schools (Lexington, Newton, Exeter, Andover...), but more than others. Having said that, it all depends upon your child and his/her habits and choices! Those who dislike it intensely probably have an axe to grind. Basically, it's a fine school with some problems and many more benefits. It has attracted a large number of private school kids back to MHS, not because the price is right, but because private schools offer no sizeable educational advantage, and parents can have their kids in their lives everyday!

I agree,these reviews are ridiculous. And i too am a sophomore this year at the school and it really isn't that bad. The classes may be challenging, but if your child can't handle it all they have to do is go to the guidance office and get a form that allows them to drop down to a lower class. They don't have to be in all honors classes to do well. Yes, your child may have a lot of things due on one day, but they also have plenty of time in advance to do it all and study for whatever it is. The teachers don't assign you a huge project to do and expect it to be due the next day. And i agree that there is a lot of alcohol and drug use at the school but it has nothing to do with the school, it's the parents.

Alright, looking at the all the other reviews, im actually laughing. Im currently a sophomore at MHS, and I can tell you, that its a pretty good school. All these complaints about teachers being too hard, or the homework is too much, are ridiculous. This is highschool. If your kids cant handle this amount of homework, then how are they supposed to handle college. The school has great extracurriculars, and an especially great Theater/ Performing arts department.As for the drug problem,while it is true that there are many students here who do marijuana and drink alcohol,That doesnt mean that its the schools fault. I personally blame the parents for not keeping a better watch on there kids. Its your responcibility to watch what your kids do on the weekends with your friends, not the schools.

This school puts unparalleled demands on students, and my son, a freshman, has no time for socializing or for afterschool clubs because of the homework he gets every night. There was one day when my son had three tests, two projects and one essay due on a Friday. The teachers are nice, but they like to challenge the kids a lot. This school is only good for Honors students that can take on a variety of challenges, and already know some of the subject matter.

Parents, please, please, please don't send your kids to MHS. It is considered a really good school, but the adminastration is horrible. They grind the teachers into the ground and the students are zonked off. A lot of the kids have drug or alcohol problems because the school is so alienating. It is really dehumanizing. I went there for a year, and it was the worst year of my life. The school has a great special ed. program, but they treat all teenagers like inferior beings. Attending MHS is not an experience that will help your kid develop well.

The school is good. Lots of special interest classes. Very strong in the Arts. Have fielded teams to Mass Theater Competition and Fine Arts competition. Good only for kids in traditional couses of study.
