5... The school has a lot to offer, but there seems to be some turmoil among the staff there. I think this can be a distraction to the wonderful school that it is, and hope that whatever issues exist, can be resolved.
Disagree that parents don't car about education! Why are they so involved in PTO if they don't care? There is an online discussion about the library staffing, and agreed that their could be improvement there. The former comment is obviously made by someone is involved in the library issue. The library issue is one that many would like to fix, but the methods of getting attention to it are putting most people off. It's turning into a personality issue and that shouldn't be taken as a general comment on this school.
I wholeheartedly agree with the review below about low expectations at this school. The PTO seems very engaged and constantly looks like they are trying to raise money but the focus on education is astoundingly lax at this school. It's a real shame, there are some fantastic teachers and some really awful teachers but the general apathetic approach to education is overwhelming.
I'm not sure what these other reviewers are thinking. This school is terrible. The workload and expectations for my child are VERY low. The mathematics curriculum borders on the criminal. My kids are consistently bored in school. The lack of differentiation in the classroom is a disaster for any of the kids who are more prepared to study. I'm a colleged educated dad. BS and MS from reputable universities. I've also tutored kids for many years across many levels, so while not a professional educator, I have a decent idea of what it takes for kids to be prepared for "new economy" jobs. I can't stress to you enough to avoid Medford public schools at the elementary school level. Your child will be completely left behind their competition locally at other schools and certianly compared to international competition. If your aspirations for your child are a job and career at a lower level of the economic ladder, this education will probably do for your child. If you aspire more for your children, be prepared to dramatically subusdize the classroom work here with tutors and other external resources to just get your child to par with the competition.
I've been at school for many years, and can't say enough good things about the school!! The teachers are super, and there is a new principal(2nd year) that is putting a lot of effort into improving the school. The PTO is very involved, and gives back to the school in many ways!! One drawback is the play areas outside are in desperate need of costly repairs.
Good school, good teachers, new principal that is trying hard! Great PTO! The inside of the school is pretty high-tech, the outside play area is becoming run down, but costly to fix!
Terrific teachers, new and enthusiastic principal, engaged PTO. Very pleased with Brooks Elementary and the education that my child is receiving so far!
Let's see how the new Principal does. I agree about a gifted program there. Wish there was one!
I agree with both posts below. The teachers here are wonderful. Many great ones and they do love these kids! But parents here are talking more and more about the math problems. We need to change with the times and get a new math curriculum other than this Chicago or Everyday Math system we use. Something more parent friendly so we can help our kids at home with it. It's time for change...but not for our teachers.
This school has been in a downward spiral for years now. Lowest MCAS scores in Medford. Ineffective principal. TERC math coming in 2011. Only going to get worse!
I think the parent's review is subjective, although, I personally believe that there are some ( K.Garthen, 1st and 4th grade) good teachers, there are some useless ones. The test scores tab says it all: http://www.greatschools.org/modperl/achievement/ma/3012#from..Tab and that all goes to the administration, not putting blame on funds, ... a lots of kids time goes to waste, no h.works,...etc.
Our experience at the Brooks has been fantastic. I've been extremely impressed with not only the teachers my child has had but also the principals dedication to the children. This is a unique and special school. We feel lucky to have such a 'private school feel' at a public school cost!
We've had nothing but postive experiences here. The teachers, support staff, and other parents are incredible and the kids themselves are a very nice group. While the administration may be a bit weak from time to time, they do try to solicit parent feedback when they can. My kids are happy to go to school every day, and they are excited about what they learn. That's half the battle.
While most of the teachers at the Brooks school are great, some are downright incompetent. The problem then becomes those with connections get the desirable teachers and the rest get the leftovers. The administration is not proactive, they simply try to put out fires. On the positive side, there is a great deal of parent involvement and a strong PTO.
The Brooks School is supposed to be the 'superior' of all elementary schools in the area. Although they have a state of the art facility, they have administration who are weak and are big into being PC. The PTO is outstanding. My child is a transfer student who received a less than seasoned teacher the first year in the school. The children run the class and I am afraid my child will be 'left in the dust' when the next year comes around. This is just my experience, though, and, although I would not stop anyone from attending the school, be aware that I was surprised at the way my child's transfer was handled and know that you will not get a great deal of assistance from administration.
