We are not originally from this area (we moved here in 2007). I have a daughter in the first grade at Quarry Hill and she loves going to this school. I've had good experiences with her teacher also. My younger daughter (whom will be entering K next year) receives speech therapy at the school. She has made many improvements in her speech, we both love her therapist and it was very easy to get her set up to receive the therapy through the town. Overall, my family has had a great experience with this school.

The academic programs at Quarry Hill are not very high quality. Quality varies wildly. There are several teachers who are very high calibre, and their students fare well. Unfortunately, there are also many teachers who are ineffective, apathetic and unskilled, and the principal seems to have a difficult time holding her staff to any academic or behavioral standard. There is no guidance counselor, no afterschool programs, no extracurricular activities or even afterschool help from teachers. There used to be a very active parent volunteer program but it is no longer very active. Parents are not welcomed or valued by administrators. Test scores are low and falling. There are a lot of behavior issues in the school, and the discipline policy is ineffective.

About the tests

In 2010-2011 Massachusetts used the Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System (MCAS) to test students in grades 3 though 8 and 10 in English language arts and math and in grades 5, 8, and 10 in science. The grade 10 MCAS is a high school graduation requirement. The MCAS is a standards-based test, which means it measures specific skills defined for each grade by the state of Massachusetts. The goal is for all students to score at or above proficient on the test.
