The people are wonderful and the environment is very nurturing. With that said there is far too little emphasis placed on the basic skills needed to progress to Middle School. My daughter graduated from Shutesbury and is now in Middle School and she is far behind in math and science. Despite all the positive feelings I have about the school it's not preparing kids for the challenges of the 21st century.
WOnderful school and community
We have the best community school! It's a public school but feels like a private one in the quality of the teachers, we have an incredible principal and staff, and the classroom sizes are small. The food in the cafeteria trumps other school's greasy lunches, and both my kids actually enjoy going to school. I feel so fortunate that our children are at Shutesbury Elementary!
Teachers & administrators who love what they do; the fact that physcial education, music, instrumental music and art are all considered a necessary part of the curriculum; the academics are strong, as is the reading program. There is a Psychologist on staff, and lots of support for kids on IEP's. The after care staff are happy and caring, and provide an entertaining, safe and active environment for the kids. The halls are filled with art, the library is filled with current & classic books overseen by an active Librarian, the computer lab has up to date equipment and an Information Technology Instructor that works with the teachers to further support each grade's curriculum. The assemblies almost always have local musicians who perform, and the school lunches are healthy & tasty. This would not be possible save for strong support from the communty. I'm not saying its perfect, nothing is, but I think this is as close as it gets.
Shutesbury School is an innovative and collaborative school that supports children as they create meaning from a multitude of experiences.
I use to attend Shutesbury Elementary school! It was a great school, very small school. They had great programs and teachers. However some of the teaching could be helped a bit and having classes for 5 and 6 and 3 and 4 is kind of confusing and not very helpful. Anything else its a great school.
