THS is a great school. All staff, including teachers, want us to have a good time, and if needed, they will help a student if they get lost. The only bad things i see is that because the school is so large, its easy to get lost, and the second thing is that its crowded.
Taunton High is okay. The students tend to get away with several activites, and the teachers only show interest in teaching the required topic and getting their paycheck. It's relatively easy to do well and the classes are pretty enjoyable. However, some of the teachers are disliked by a good majority of students and they do a poor job of connecting with the student. Overall the clubs and activities are well put together, but the students aren't straightened out properly and some of the teachers aren't organized.
I attend Taunton High School as an 8th grader. The school in general is excellent. I dont see the problem with it. The teachers are very cooprotive with students who are not disrespectful. Guidence councelors are exceptionally decent. Whil they are slow on responces, the teachers are by far qualified. I recommend this school to anyone who is interested. At Taunton high, acidemic excellence, civic pride, and social responsabilaty are stressed to its fullest extent. I love being here, and cannot wait to graduate as a Taunton Tiger!
taunton high school is not up to par. there are way too many students and the guidance is pathetic. you never see the headmasters outside of their office and no one tries to help indidvidual students. everyone is only concerned for making funds and the MCAS. we do lots of surveys to try and get money from the government and it doesnt feel like a school, more as a punishment. there is way too much going on and its much too busy. teachers and workers are unfriendly and do not teach as well as they should and no one thinks of students like myself. teachers have even been known to cuss at students. they are strict in the wrong places and do not care if students pass or not. it should be a high school, not a strip mall (as a previous parent said). i have never disliked school as i do now. i always enjoyed learning and now just cannot wait to graduate.
My son went there from 2007 and graduated in 2010. The guidance counselors were pathetic, both of them. During his time here, all they did was spoon feed him for the MCAS every year. I know the MCAS is important for funding etc., however when you teach it ONLY day in and day out... you are doing nothing for the kids, but teaching them memorization. Every time I engaged him at home and discussed school it was ALL ABOUT the MCAS. it's basically because the school sucked and Superintendent was well past retiring age by 8-10 years... he was just sucking up the good funds while they were available. There is now a better Superintendent in that role and she is doing a good job I feel, however it is too late for my son. Also with the tight budgets it will be difficult to turn it around anytime soon. The one thing that baffles me at this school is they have 1) banking credit union 2) medical clinic on campus (publicly used) an elementary school and nearby preschool and 3) an alter school program ... There is just too much going it's like a strip mall of different options, kinda crazy and out of sync!
My experience at Taunton High School has been truly amazing. The diverse cultural atmosphere and excellet faculty and student leadership make it a top educational facility. There is an opportunity for anyone and everyone here. When I came to THS, i played sports and joined some clubs in order to become a more connected student, and I found my spot in student council. Through StuCo I became more involved with the school and developed myself as a person and a leader. I am now serving as the president of the senior class of 2011 at THS and I am well known and respected throughout the building and community. At Taunton High, those who work hard and become connected students, will always succeed. I am proud to be a part of Tiger Nation.
Taunton High has been going through a renovation for the past few years, and so therefore the conditions have somewhat improved.. Though even if THS had stayed the way it was, I would've still loved it anyway. I am currently a Junior at THS in all Honors classes, and THS was my first choice as an eight grader. They are the only school in the area with a full-fledged Art program, including AP art, ceramics, photography, etc. Nearly every teacher I have had was helpful,a nd kind, and my guidance counselor helps me in any way possible. I also disagree with the arguement that we have a limited Special Education program. I myself am Legally Blind, and aquire any services I may ever need at THS. I suggest that skeptics talk to the students who go to THS today, not parents who remmeber the school from long ago qhen they were students. Tiger Nation will forever be my home.
Taunton High School prepared my oldest son to get into the college of his dreams (Berklee College of Music). THS has something for everyone, and his foundation in music and academics brought him to where he is now. Now, THS is preparing my 15 year-old junior to go to the college of HIS dreams. That's right--he just turned 15 and is a junior in high school. This public, urban high school that sometimes get a 'bad rap', with about 2,000 students, was able to accomodate my son so that he could advance outside of the norm, and be prepared to fulfill his dreams. Both of my children have had the opportunity to be in a public and diverse institution that boosted them to become individuals.
AS a large school has great opportunities for those who can take advantage.
I was not happy with Taunton High School. They quality of academic programs were poor. Their Guidance department does not go out of their way for each child. They gear themselves to students who they feel have a potential to go to college. The level of parent involvement is 0. I tried many times to get involved with the school. They would commit to the time you were there but never followed up with me after. All in all I was not happy with their school. Due to the way their Guidance is handled my son, now a senior does not have the required courses to go onto a 4 year college. He now has to go to a two year and then transfer over. My over all rating for this school is a F for failing to help all children.
I have had two children graduate from THS and never had any problems with either. Both children were involved with athletics or other activities. I think a great deal has to do with the student and parent involvement. Considering the fact that it is a very diverse city, it's a great school system.
I graduated from THS in '01 and must say that compared to stories I have heard from other students at college, THS is an excellent and safe school. As far as I remember, there were only three major fights during my four years there. Although the average test scores are fairly low, it is an average. Many Advanced Placement courses are offered and all have an extremely high pass rate. I can only remember one person failing the AP test. Most of the teachers, especially the ones teaching the high level classes, are very dedicated and help their students in any way. The facilities could be better, but for a public school in a city, they are not bad by any stretch. I never noticed any gang activity while I was there, nor much bullying. I was a nerd, so I should know too.
I agree that the facilities are old and some of them do not work anymore. I even agree that it is a pit. All schools will have pros and cons. THS has many classes and opportunities. It is an old school which is half the reason it's a pit. Some of the guidance couselors are great, some of them are not so great. Some of the teachers are great, some of them are not so great. You are going to find that at any public school you go to. You will not always like all the teachers you have. THS has good things about it and bad things about, if you go to a public school I can almost 100% guarantee you will find some good things and some bad things. If you don't like it then try to find a 'better' school for what you want and/or are looking for.
Facilities are old, half of them not in use anymore. Teachers are apathetic at best. The place is a pit.
I graduated from THS in 2001 and am currently a Biochemistry major at UmassA. THS was the highlight of my school career. Because the school was large, it had so much to offer. I was involved in 6 or 7 organizations. Advisors and teachers encouraged me to do community service, and took several advance placement courses. THS is also quite diverse despite its statistics; much of the 'caucasian' population is 1st/2nd generation Portuguese/Cape Verdian. Most of my teachers were wonderful and influencial. Many of them held after-school-help and tutored me one-on-one. Some of the parent reviews are very negative, and I have to disagree with the things they said. If students have the desire to learn and to be involved, they should have had no problem at THS. Admittedly there were some problems with drugs/violence, but even the smallest Catholic school in suburbia is going to have these kinds of problems.
I definitely disagree with the two bad reviews! As a senior at Taunton High, I think it is a great school. I never had any problems with anything. The teachers are great and very friendly. The guidance counselors help you whenever they can. They are tons of clubs to join and to meet new people. I wouldn't choose any other High School to go to!
THS has been out of control over the past few years. So we are moving. The classes are way too large, some teachers, no fault of their own, have lost control. The headmaster does cover up gang activity. I do know this first hand! He does not communicate students concerns with the small security staff. They are left in the dark! They need more security! I am 33 and passed as a student. THS needs more security, better communication and to stop bussing in problem kids from other towns for a few extra bucks. I'm sorry but boot the kids who do not want to be there anyway, half the problem solved.
I completely DISAGREE with the first parent's review. As a graduate of THS, not much has changed since I have graduated (2000). Although I may not be a parent, I am an interested teacher in hopes of being hired in THS. THS was my first experience in a public school and wouldn't change it for the world. As a secondary ed major who taught in Boston all her 4 years of college, trust me no high school or any school for that matter is safe. However, times are changing, but one should feel certain that the teachers in THS are dedicated and concerned with the health, safety and education of thier students!
i tell you the truth, this school has active gang activity, poor safety measures in place, virtually no sped programs, and children are assaulted daily. its test scores are half that of the state average. class sizes are extremely large and htere is no control by teachers. the principal is never available to parents or students. hte superintendent is even worse. do not put your child here if you want them to be safe.
