When I was 11, driving along Pacific Coast Highway with my family, I dreamed that I would live 50 miles outside of a large city, where I would work at an exciting job. I thought that the city would be San Francisco and that I would live somewhere in Northern California. Silly me, I live 37 miles from downtown Los Angeles and I commute via the light rail Metrolink train. Very European -- me with a large espresso and steamed milk, a good book or a project and my iPod -- watching the traffic as we speed on by. The university has a tram service that picks me up at Union Station and drops me off two blocks from my office, where I spend my days writing. Even on the worst of days, its a lovely life and I got my dreams, even better than I imagined.
