Angell has received two Beating the Odds Awards from the State of Michigan. Relative to other schools with the same demographics, e.g. ethnic, free and reduced lunch, special education, gender, Angell far exceeds similar schools in terms of student achievement. Angell has been ranked by the State of Michigan in the top 99% of all schools for the last four years.
Angell is excellent. The teachers are conscientious and caring. The school secretary is terrific. The principal is visible and has provided needed resources for the school. The school has high expectations and Angell is ranked 20th in the state among all elementary and middle schools.
Considered the best school in Ann Arbor, but smart, successful people have smart kids. So, not sure you can credit the teachers for its success. Lots of parents take Kumon outside of school. It is what teachers do with bottom 30% of the kids that show the true worth and they are not doing that well here. Principal is outstanding (best in town). Music teacher thinks it is great to have shows where kids tryout for parts and there are big winners and losers. Totally discourages kids from the arts and quiet kids never really get a chance unless they raise their hands (after 5 years, kids stop raising their hands). It is like only teaching the kids to read who want to. Extremely harmful and damaging for the kids. Music shows are great because the kids who can memorize line and sing are showcased and those who cannot are left standing on the bleachers- year after year. It is about the music teacher here vs. the kids.
I was a student who graduated at Angell and I loved it there. All the teachers helped with learning and they also prepared me for middle school.
Very mediocre school. People who have grown up in A2 speak very highly of it for some reason. Extremely poor principal responsiveness to problems/questions. Curriculum is at least 1 year behind grade level outside the area.
I am a fifth grader at angell and I like it here so much. The environment is friendly and I feel safe at Angell.
My son loves and enjoys to go school here, great place to learn, communicative teacher, and good surroundings
I think Angell is the best school in Ann Arbor. I learn a lot in Angell so far.
An amazing elementary school! My children learned so much from the skilled and dedicated teaching staff. This is the best elementary school in the city.
This school is considered the best (?) one in town. But I feel several issues to be clarified: 1) Our child's home work was never marked and returned 2) Teaching style is not very structured, maybe depending on teacher to teacher 3) Too many unnecessary activities, good for students with social ability and leadership. But kids need to learn basic math and reading. Our child is happy anyway. 4) The advantage is that this is a small school, so all kids know each other and know their teachers.
I am a former student of Angell. This is an amazing school and I miss it so much. My youngest sister will be graduating this year and my whole family will truly miss it. I love each and every teacher there, they have such a great staff. They also have an amazing music department. In two years they will start teaching languages there. Angell has just had a turf soccer field put in and they are dedicating it to a very important man who passed away this October. The Ice Cream Social is on June 2nd, please fell free to come and check out our amazing school!
I attented Angell for many years, and it was a great place to be. The teachers are very involved and everyone there was welcoming and really made me feel at home and safe. Even after graduating I still feel like part of the Angell community.
Nice and friendly enviroments for kids. Lot of extracurricular activities. Especially music is very good. Gym and outside playgrounds are excellent. Reading groups and reading buddies boost children ability and interest in reading. Teachers are supportive and well prepared, with some interest in experimenting with new methods. My daughter was in first grade for only a few months, but she loved it.
my child attended angell school for a number of years. He no longer attends angell. bullying tends to be allowed at angell. it appears that the rule of order there is that if no one is hitting, then everything is ok. any child can say anything he or she wants to another child, up to and beyond the point of verbal harrassment, with no repercussions to the bully whatsoever. i am disgusted with this school.
My daughter went to this school for her second grade level only, but was brought from a below kindergarten reading level to fourth grade level with similar improvement in math. This school has amazing community involvement, allows for a hugely diverse student body and actively encourages parent involvement. First class elementary ed!
This is the wealthiest elementary school district in Ann Arbor, and so there are quite a few 'snobbish' individuals. The parents, especially the stay-at-home moms from the central city area, can be VERY clickish and can make it very difficult for the parents of new students to get involved in activities such as PTo, ice-cream socials, etc. However, there is a very high level of involvement by these same parents, so maybe there is a trade-off. One of the school board members has a son in school here, and he is very interested in the goals and needs of the educational mission. Overall, pretty good school, especially if you can deal with the snotty attitudes, the kids don't seem to notice too much.
