Excellent school. The principal is high energy and full of ideas to continually improve the school in any way she can. The teachers are excellent and help each student as if they were their own. One of my children excells but is still challenged by her individual teachers. My other child has experienced major medical challenges and the teachers and school staff have gone out of their way to accomodate her needs during times of illness and beyond. I wouldn't want my children to attend any other school. There is an awesome group of parents that participate and organize events at the school and they always encourage others to help out and get involved. There is something organized every month as a family event. I love Haggerty Elementary and would recommend it to anyone seeking an excellent school.

I had a tough time deciding between public or private school for my son's future. I am glad he attended Haggerty for kindergarten this past year! By the end of the year the students had to write a story as well as do basic addition and subtraction. Mrs. Patton was an awesome teacher and responded swiftly to any inquiries. I also appreciated the multiple aides. Mrs. Pitt, the principal, has a great energy which is shared by the entire staff!

I really love my daughters teacher Mrs.Binert. I wish she could have her every year, and so does she. I like how involved they are with raising money for organizations. This is the best school for my child. Keep up the good work.

I can not say enough about the staff and Principal at Haggerty Elementary. My son just started attending Haggerty this year after starting his academic career at Keystone Academy. We left Keystone after 4 years because they refused to help my special needs son. I took my son w/all kinds of medical documentation; the same documentation I presented to Keystone and he qualified for special education at Haggerty without question. He is now receiving the special help he needs and is thriving. I am only sorry that I didn't check out the Van Buren schools sooner.

I love the teachers, staff and principal, they work hard for the kids and its all about the kids. Haggerty has the highest MEAP scores in the district this year.

This is an excellent school...tops in the district! The office staff is extremely helpful and friendly. They have a new principal, Mrs. Pitt, she is full of energy and has brought many new ideas to Haggerty. The teachers are hard working and caring. Haggerty has some of the highest MEAP scores in the district.

My daughter has attended Haggerty for almost two years. We relocated briefly, and during that interim I realized what a great school Haggerty is. They encourage parental involvement and thus have tons of activities throughout the year for the kids and families to get involved in. If you take advantage of the opportunity to go to these events, you will certainly find a place of greater involvement with the school and realize that they care a lot about making it a great environment for the kids.

I am very pleased with this school. I have two sons, one in 5th and one in 1st and am happy with both teachers. I think Mrs. Pitt is doing a wonderful job and Mrs. Campbell and Mrs. Armstrong are always polite and helpful. I truly can't see someone not being happy with this school overall. Keep up the good work! Nicole Stoops

My son is in Haggerty School's kindergarten. I wasn't sure if I was going to send him to the public school or to a charter school. I am so very pleased with my decision. I love his teacher and the new principal is excellent. I've met with her a few times and she is always helpful and wanting to support the students. I couldn't be happier with how my son is doing. He's learning quickly and comes home every day happy. His class has 24 students and two parapro's and one teacher-they have plenty of help.

My daughter has attended for three years and has never had less than 30 students without aides. Also as well I agree that lunch is way too short and overcrowded.

My son has attended Haggerty for 3 years, he has never had a class that had over 23 students. Each time I have visited his class, a classroom aide was always present. With the exception of one teacher, all others have been very organized and actually know how to teach. The principal is very involved and so are most parents. The entire student body for the most part are some of the most well behaved students I've seen in a long time. Parent participation is key and there is a lot at Haggerty. Lunch period is too short, but they are dealing with a lunchroom that is entirely too small. I feel most of the negative reviews come from those parents who only show up at the school once or twice a year.

My daughter has been at Haggerty for the past two years and I think her teachers have been exceptional! Mrs. Maxwell was her 4th grade teacher and Mr. TenBroeck is her 5th grade teacher. Both have taken time to dicuss my daughter's progress and provided positive feedback.

This school is one of the worst I have ever seen. The classrooms are overcrowded, the children have no textbooks, everything is photocopied from the web. There seems to be no set curriculm.

The classes are overcrowded. The average class is 30 students. Their are no Teacher Aides.

The kids only have 7 to 10 minutes to eat lunch. Then are led back to the classroom to read. One person watches up to 52 children at lunch time.

Haggerty was a wonderful school. The teachers are very involved with their students. They are there to teach, and there is no doubt that they don't do that. They meet their goals, and help students to reach theirs as well. Haggerty's staff has always given their best and related to their students. They 'want' the students to be successful, and that 'want' ensures that they won't quit until they have done their best. I cannot think of one thing that I would change about this school. The level of education is always met or exceeded what it should be. There are many programs that are available for the students and many activities to do during the school day. Such as: art, music, gym, and 'library'. Everything is scheduled properly and the students seem to be happy. Being a former student of Haggerty, I'd say that I was very pleased.

While Belleville schools do not receive the highest scores in the newspapers, I have found Haggerty to be wonderful. Every teacher has made tremendous effort to work with my daughter. Her teachers have been kind, but structured; her classwork has pushed her to learn, without being too hard. I would recommend this school to anyone. She always felt safe and cared for. My daughter struggled at times and I found the communication with her teachers to be excellent.

About the tests

In 2013-2014 Michigan used the Michigan Educational Assessment Program (MEAP) to test students in grades 3 through 8 in math, reading and writing; in grades 5 and 8 in science; and in grades 6 and 9 in social studies. Currently, GreatSchools' ratings reflect 2013 MEAP results; ratings will be updated after 2014 Michigan Merit Examination (MME) results are released. The MEAP is a standards-based test, which measures how well students are mastering specific skills defined for each grade by the state of Michigan. The goal is for all students to score at or above the proficient level.

Beginning in the 2011-2012 school year, the Michigan State Board of Education implemented new definitions of what it means to be proficient on the MEAP test. In addition, they have recalculated past years' results using these new standards for proficiency, making the above year-over-year results comparable.

What is the GreatSchools Rating?

The GreatSchools rating is a simple tool for parents to compare schools based on test scores, student academic growth, and college readiness. It compares schools across the state, where the highest rated schools in the state are designated as “Above Average” and the lowest “Below Average.” It is designed to be a starting point to help parents make baseline comparisons. We always advise parents to visit the school and consider other information on school performance and programs, as well as consider their child's and family's needs as part of the school selection process.
