I wanted to love it, but after 3 years, I am pulling all my children. There is a non-accredited mom teaching first grade. The lower grade classes are as big as public school, and in the upper grades, there are so few kids in the class that cliques are prevalent. Kids are encouraged to be judgmental based on differing Christian beliefs. There are many special needs kids with behavioral issues who didn't do well in public school, and they are disruptive to the class. SOTL doesn't have aides so teachers are distracted. One girl used to cut herself in class, and my daughter would have to take her to the office. Helping others is a great, Christian practice, but I am paying for my children to get an education. PE and "music" are a joke - the kids crawl around on the lunchroom floor for gym during winter and the entire school (preschool-7th grade) sings songs together for "music." IT and gym teachers change every year b/c they get better jobs. I would caution any parent considering this school to take a look at WHO are the people on the school board and also WHAT kids are being taught. The school administration doesn't listen to criticism. Many families are not coming back next year.
This school is not what it appears to be. It used to be a great place with a Christian environment. However, for the past two years the new Administration has changed the school to focus on how it "appears" instead of how it is. I pulled my children and would not recommend this school.
SOTL is an outstanding school with caring staff. I am so glad we brought both of my boys over from public school. My children are getting a superior education and reinforcement of our family's Christian world view at SOTL. We couldn't be happier.
My son will be starting his 4th year at SOTL. Over the past 4 years, there has been tremendous growth and expansion in the school. The staff loves each and every student, works with the parents and provides a wonderful learning environment. The building arrangement may seem a little disjointed to those who are looking for a beautiful, high tech, state of the art facility, but what you will find is a Christ centered environment, students who typically test above grade level and a teaching staff who care about your child's spiritual and academic growth. If the school is out growing it's building, what could be a better testament of what the children are gaining there? No place is perfect. Personally, I would rather a solid academic education where my kids can bring Jesus to school with them everyday than a beautiful building to look at.
I started my oldest daughter at SOTL for 3's preschool. Now both of my kiddos go there and after three years, I still love it here! The atmosphere is welcoming and the families are great! The teachers have been extremely caring and their compassion shows! I chose SOTL for their strong academic base as well as the environment. I am blessed to have found this wonderful school!
SOTL is amazing. My kids get a wonderful Christian education plus all the extras: music, art, PE, technology, Spanish, etc. My kids love the free math club and the free boys running club. I am impressed.
I have tried to post several times, but my reviews continue to be removed. They're not necessarily bad, just offering my perspective as a visitor. Anyway, I visited the school, toured, and met teachers and I think some volunteers. I thought the facility itself was somewhat hodge-podge in its layout, like I was in a collection of trailers underground, but that doesn't necessarily mean its not a good school. The turn-off for me was the interaction I had with a teacher who began talking down another local christian school. This was very strange because it came out of nowhere and it was so harsh. This was a terribly poor first impression of the lutheren religion and from what I heard, it reflected something I DO NOT want my daughter to learn. I have continued to look and will NOT be enrolling my daughter in this school. I suppose folks have a bad day and say the wrong thing, but this was definitely unsolicited and way too natural. I understand this from parents. It can get kind of snobby with parents sometimes. But this is a teacher, and if I have an issue with my child's education, I don't want to be afraid to say something to the teacher. Just my opinion. That's it.
I transferred my kids from another Lutheran School nearby, I am SO PLEASED, with the leaps and bounds in learning that my children have taken since the change. My oldest started at SOTL in 1st Grade, coming out of Kindergarten, knowing some sight words, but not really reading. He is now 1/2 way through second grade and reading at a 3rd grade level. His first grade teacher partnered with me, helping me to teach him, while she was teaching him to read. I loved some of the teachers at the other school, but the leadership outside the classroom was lost after the principal was unfairly treated. I also have a Kindergarten student, and he is already reading and knows many sight words. He is already part way through the list of words he is expected to know, going into second grade... and a blooming math wiz! I can't say enough either about the CHRIST Centered focus this school has, it shines through my children every day... and they LOVE GOING TO CHURCH AND SCHOOL at SOTL! Very Pleased!
Excellent Preschool up to 6th grade. Wonderful school to send your children to. I am thankful I did!
I transferred my kids here after leaving another local lutheran school. They are BY FAR getting a better education and a CHRIST centered education. Academically, my kids have both taken HUGE LEAPS in their learning since the transfer. My son came out of Kindergarten not being able to read (but did know some sight words), with a lot of loving help from the teacher he is now reading at nearly a second grade level and we couldn't be happier. The teachers and all of the staff are just wonderful. We first learned of them by attending their Vacation Bible school where we were AMAXZED at the 600 + kids that showed up the whole weak and seeing their love for CHRIST! Amazing Place.
This is our first year at SOTl and we love it. We are already looking forward to next year with our children. We know they are getting the best christian education posible here.
My son started at SOTL in preschool. We liked it so much we decided to enroll him there for his elementary education. I especially love the small class size and the individual attention he gets. This is going to be a great foundation for him.
I am more than pleased with the school, the curriculum, the teachers, administration and the entire program. What a blessing we have to be able to send our child to such a wonderful school.
5 Stars!! This school knows what it means to partner with parents to grow their students in the faith in Jesus Christ in which they are called. They not only have a strong academics but they teach the kids how to serve others through acts of kindness and what it truely means to be a disciple.
Shepherd of the Lakes is a wonderful school with a great nurturing, learning environment. The class sizes are small and the teachers are terrific--they go out of their way to make the children feel special. This is my daughter's 2nd year and I have seen a HUGE change in her. They have financial aid and are willing to work with your budget. You don't have to be Lutheran--any church is fine. I hope we can afford to keep her there for a long time.
