I agree that with 'gifted and talented' in the name, more is to be expected, not only of parents, but the school and the district as well. I'm very active, and most Bates parents that I know expect high quality. They also deliver it! Currently, the school is operating under sub-standard conditions, and for that parents have a right to voice their opinions. The school lacks sufficient coverage in the cafeteria, on the playground, and in classrooms. Fights are common, and so is theft among students. You can smell the stinch of the restrooms from a distance, and they're rarely clean. Bates parents, I say keep up the good work, but by all means continue to voice your opinions so that prospective Bates parents won't come in oblivious to the issues!!!! Sometimes your voice can bring on change.
I love Bates Academy! I've been reading reviews about bates academy and I am shocked. Yes, the children have lots of homework, but, as a parent you should help them. You should be proud and willing to help them to excel. It is not the teachers responsibility to be the only teacher. When you decided to have children, you accepted that task. Parents, it is your duty to assist you children in excellence! There are so many schools out here that don't send the children home with homework and don't care. When your child gets homework regularly and you assist, you can better understand how to help your child. You also get to learn there weaknesses and further assist in those areas. Come on parents, this school is great and if you don't think so, why are your children there? Some of us parents appreciate Bates Academy and you should too!
Bates Academy challenges the students and prepares them for the next step which is High School.
It is time for the district to either bring the school back up to it's original standard or remove the 'gifted and talented' label. The first step needs to be a new administration. Structure left with the previous principal who retired less than 2 years ago. Teachers who were once very enthusiastic are now stressed out and overwhelmed. They lack the basic resources needed to meet a 'gifted and talented' curriculum. Students will literally run you over in the hallways because of all of the horseplay. There is no control now.
It is my last year at Bates after being here since the first grade.I must say Bates' Alumni and the current students have and are well prepaired and are doing exuberantly well in a lot of fields. However, it isnt what it used to be.Many of the very notable teachers have retiered , the kids can be quite unruly, and the administration makes some very unorganized decisions.Another thing that is quite annoying is that for us to be one of the highest noted schools out there we have a lack of supplies and some programs that would really accsentuate the enviorment.I would say this school is very good in a sense that its better than a lot of DPS schools ;although , it needs a tremendous amout of work and effort from some of the students , staff , and the DPS school district. I would reccomend this school after doing more reaserch.
Bates Academy is by no means what it used to be. I've had two children to attend Bates from kindergarten through eighth grade. Even then I didn't feel that Bates was perfect, but they left Bates amply prepared for the next level. I currently have a child in sixth grade at Bates an I wonder daily if he will remain through his eighth grade year. The new administration seems to be taking the school in a much different (& less preferred) direction. There is less structure, less discipline and more of the 'kids rule' atmosphere. It seems that the really good teachers from years past are being worn down by this atmosphere; they seem to be giving up and giving in. It is truly a travesty and a shame for this once glowing example of an EXCELLENT DPS school has sunk to its current depths.
I think Bates Academy is a great school. Unfortunately it is riddled with the financial challenges of DPS. The principal is doing a great job holding it together. I think it's tough because no matter what you put in, you are battling the administration. I know many parents and teachers are concerned with Robert Bobb, the financial manager....But we've had the school district for years and have failed our children. I think all schools in the district could learn from Bates philosophy, treat all children in the district as if they are advanced from day one.....because they are.
A lot of supportive parents are pulling their children and taking them elsewhere. My son fnished the 8th grade there 3 years ago. I have a daughter there now, and I also see a drastic difference under the new leadership. Discipline is not as firm as it used to be. Children are often insufficiently supervised, especially during social situations, i.e. lunch and playground. Administration is often unavailable when needed. I will be among those fleeing families next school year.
I agree that it is not as up to par as it was under the previous administration. The teachers are not as enthusiastic as they once were. The environment is not as controlled as it used to be. There is a need for stronger organization. This will be my last year. My children will be going to private school.
Not at all what it used to be. Great teachers are leaving left and right, and so are wonderful families. Not very well organized. New administration has taken the school in a different direction.
This is an extremely great school. I've been going there since Kindergarten and I'm in the 7th grade now. Truly, a great school. The education is great! Also, your child's personality will grow after she meets some of the people and get comfortable with this school! Enroll your child now!
Bates is one of few high performing schools in the Detroit area. This school manages to do a lot with very little. The parent support base is excellent. Bates Academy consistently scores 10 out of 10 on greatschools.org and prepares our children to go on to the best High Schools and Colleges. Bates children want to excel and are challenged to do so. Bates children are proud to say I go to Bates Academy!
i think that bates academy is a very good school.....my child has been going there for 5 years...
This is my childs 2nd yr at Bates and overall I'm pleased. My daughter has never went to a DPS school and despite the rumors Im happy to say she is being very challenged at Bates.
I think that for the money, this is the best deal going in Detroit city proper for edcuation. My son (in his first year) was shocked at the beginning of the year at the pace of the classses because he essentially skipped a grade in coursework, but he quickly adapted. Yes it is DPS, so it has limited resources and not as much individual attention as one would like, but I think that this was a great experience for my son to enter Middle school. My daughter is also a first year student and she caught on pretty fast. Both overall enjoyed their experiences at Bates and we look forward to next year!
I have been a parent at Bates Academy for the last 7 years with 3 children attending. I was also a student at Bates Academy. This school is by far the best elementary/middle school in Detroit and ranks top in the state. Not only are the students exposed to challenging academics but always a wide variety of extracurricular programs. The parents involvement at Bates is phenomenal. I would recommend Bates to anyone looking for a quality public education for their child.
I have attended Bates Academy since the 3rd grade and i will b graduating soon this year. 09'! During my years at Bates Academy i have learned sooo much. I don t think i would have gained as much information from any other school. A downside of Bates Academy is the drama that the students are involved in but this wouldn't be a problem if students really would attempt to stay away from confrontation. When i first go to bates my friends and i were always in drama, but as the years progressed we matured and became a family, moreover drama didn't erupt as much. However i do have to admit that some students tend to be conceited but what teenager isn't. Almost everyone believes that they are superior of someone else; and if thats what we are taught to think then thats what we will think.
i am a 2009 graduating student from bates and it is a good school i have been there since 5th grade and yes people do think that they are better but i mean thats how your suppose to feel you are suppose to have confidence and sometime we are better than different people because we are smart and we are all cavalier types of people.
This my first year at Bates academy and I have to say this is the worst school i've ever been to. The kids here at Bates are rude and think they are superior to others. I have had the best education here though but they environment here is just hectic.
