My children have been attending depsa for a about four years now, they are happy and are learning at a lower pace than what i would like but they are content and learning. The teachers are overworked in the elementary school, i know someone there and she never has any home time because she is always working on papers, homework checking, etc. She is always stressed because of her teaching job, and she is absolutely the best teacher in the elementary division. She is always worried, worried that she could be the next one fired, especially if the money is tight at the school. They always get rid of the highest earning teachers when things begin to go south. I was a teacher for 12 years and when i got canned it was because the school i was at was losing enrollment and money, funding if you will. Teachers are unappreciated today and there is very little loyalty to them, but they demand loyalty from us. Parents on the other hand are pretty much clueless as to how to raise their children. I worry over the lack of intellectual stamina that exists in our schools and within our body of parents. Yet, DEPSA is a good school, and i applaud the efforts of Mr. Bland to keep the school .
Detroit Edison Public School Academy is an excellent school for Pre-K - High School. I love that the teaching staff communicate with parents on a daily basis. Parents are informed of any changes about the school via text, phone call or face to face communication. I love the school to home projects and activities. The school is built of making sure partnerships are built with parents and teachers. We are all family and the main focus in the child being well rounded and ready for the future.
I had the most amazing experience! The Principal and the coaches came together to support me in my instruction! I was a first year teacher struggling to deliver instruction in a way that was engaging. I appreciate the observations, professionalism and seeing the growth of my students!
Detroit Edison Public School Academy is a wonderful place for children to learn! The school is known for having scientifically researched based programs the drive student achievement.
This, by far, is the worst teaching experience of my entire career. Employees mean NOTHING to these leaders. There is constant turnover and a devaluing of what employees have to offer. It's their way or the highway. I would NEVER send my child to this school! There is no consistency with anything. Instead of improving on their customer service and human resource, they trap people with contracts. Their is no unity and again, I'm speechless at the way people are treated Elian this company.
PMy child attends this school, I thought this was school excellent. I had no problems until mychildteacher one feday was gone. No word was giving to the parents, nothing was tills to the students, even if they are kids something should have been told to them because that's who had been teaching them all year, that is who they know and to have teacher after teacher changed on them for about a month was ridiculous. My child grades slipped some because he would turn in work it is suppose to be giving back everyday to do the next day work, sometimes it wouldn't be graded other times he just didn't get them back. He had been on the honor roll for the last two reportcards, he didn't get his last two. But besides that to me the school it's the teachers Care about those students and the students love the teachers, the administrators need to get it tighter. They challenge the kids and I seen a comment from another parent about DPS is looking better, the same work my child was doing in kindergarten, a 2ND grader was doing the same work so "please" on DPS, they are not even close to DEPSA, they will get it together.
The superintendent and other administrators at DEPSA talk a great game about high-quality urban education, but the reality is less than great, especially for teachers. Teachers are expected to stay late (unpaid) after school every day to help with tutoring, meetings or other extracurricular activities. The administration is disorganized (for example, a disciplinary referral system was not set up for several weeks into the school year). Administration also does not follow through well with disruptive students, sometimes even undermining a teacher's authority over a student, causing a variety of disciplinary problems. Teachers' prep time is consumed with meetings, supervising and disciplining students, contacting parents, and other things that look good, but do not support the work of producing quality lessons for the classroom, which must then be done in the teacher's own time. In light of these demands, it is no wonder that DEPSA has a high teacher turnover rate. The students are bright and motivated to learn, the teachers care and work hard, but this is not a healthy school for either of them.
This Is My First Year At Depsa As A Freshman. My first impression of this school was Depsa is an excellent school and very manorable. As the year went on. It has been a terrible disaster. The administration is very unorganized. Three of my teachers has quit. We aren't allowed to go too the bathroom anymore. We have visitors every single day. Depsa is becoming very "money hungry".
If there is a high teacher turnover rate at ANY school then there is something broken within the administration. No good teacher, that has a desire, passion and talent to teach will willingly leave his/her students unless the administration is unsupportive or insisting or making unnecessary demands on the teacher. Do parents realize how many unpaid hours of over time DEPSA requires it's teachers to work? Has any parent actually worked within the school and/or with it's curriculum "coaches" or administration to provide work that is redundant and unnecessary? Please know your information and facts before you deem a teacher "lazy"; teaching is not for the faint of heart and no one is in this for the pay only. We have a desire to have young people learn and when that is not prioritized or set aside for the sake of administration "saving face" or their refusal to support their teachers, that is where the problem lies. I speak as both a former teacher and parent of DEPSA.
I think this school is a pioneer for other schools to follow. The school invests in its students. How many schools purchase its students a book about winning scholarships from an Amazon best selling author that won $500,000. The school even went as far as bringing the author to the school to speak further on the subject. The event only had roughly 40 - 50 participants. In today's world when going to college is a requirement, learning how to pay for college is just as essential. Once a school makes the resources available, the ownership then shifts to the parents and students to make the time. Lastly, parents cannot complain about not having the internet. In today's world, not having the internet is detrimental to your child's future. There are so many educational resources online, and we need to be current. Phones, libraries, etc. all have access to the net. Make the investment in your child, I assure you the trade off pays huge dividends.
The school is so unorganized and under-staffed. There is a lack of communication that bothers me especially with my child being in kindergartern.
i AM A PARENT AT THIS SCHOOL AND I HAVE BEEN GETTING MORE DISAPPOINTED EACH YEAR WITH THE UNORGANIZATION, NO-COMMUNICATION, WAY OF THIS SCHOOL. THE EDUCATION IS GOOD AND THANKFULLY I GET ALONG WELL WITH MY CHILDREN'S TEACHER, AND ALSO I AM A VERY INVOLVED PARENT, BUT IF I WASN'T, I WOULDN'T KNOW ANYTHING. MY FRIENDS CHILDREN GO THERE ALOS AND THEY ASK ME FOR INFO. RECENTLY THE SCHOOL HAS GONE GREEN, WHICH IS NICE, BUT FOR THOSE WITHOUT THE INTERNET AT HOME IT IS HORRIBLE. NO COMMUNICATION IS BEING SENT TO HOMES AND RECENTLY NO RECORDING SENT TO VIA PHONE TO PARENTS. A FRIEND CALLED ME TO ASK WHAT IS THE 1ST DAY OF SCHOOL. THIS IS RIDICULOUS. I CALLED AND LEFT A VERY ANGRY VOICEMAIL AND NOW THEY WANT TO CALL WHEN I SAY I'M TAKING MY KIDS OUT. IT'S GREAT EDUCATION, BUT THEY NEED HELP WITH CUSTOMER SERVICE BADLY!
If the way I was greeted (of lack there of) and the fact that my vmail message, email message and a note at the front desk for the superintendent went ignored, is any indication of how my children will be ignored in this school, I will NOT be interested in sending them there. You would think a simply phone call would be returned to an inquiring parent. If this is how those in charge would run a business, that business would fold right after it opens. Poor communication from the top down. :-( DPS is looking a whole lot better right now.
I am a studet at Early College of Excellence (The High School) and I ha been going to this institution since Kindergarten. One thing I will say is that no school has no flaws, and this is no exception. But it is a great loving school with a clean, caring, and safe enviornment. I am taking an advanced Algebra 2 class in 9th grade (Algebra 2 is taken in 10th) and I finished the class in one semester after being taught by a college proffeser. We also went to NY for free to look at colleges. This is a great school and I encourage you to apply.
Yes, DEPSA has had a high teacher turnover thats because they do not allow lazy teacher to stay and if you are lazy you will quit . Student are being prepared for high school, the serious one are scoring 20's on the ACT right out of 8th grade. Standards are up, your student must be ready for DEPSA. Michigan State standard will change 2012, DEPSA has already change making sure they stay ahead. TRY DEPSA pre-K-10th
Edison use to be a great school, but things are really changing and the staff has been very disrespectful to the students. I have had to go to the school three time for teachers talking to my child anyway. Also her teacher has change 3 time in the first term that's crazy. There are little academics and they pick the same students from the following year never give other kids a chance.. My daughter has been there 3th grade and never have made it on anything and nows she in 7th. Same with my son it's time to go they r unorganized and ruled..
The school is excellent for high achievers. However, I find that children with special needs are lost. The curriculum is taught in an excellerated pace. Teachers seem to be on a time clock while teaching and under a lot of stress, which trickles over to the students. They have the time needed to slow down for the children needing individualized attention. I find a high level of anxiety among students, their parents and the teachers. There is an extremely high turn over of teachers which do not help the students.
This school is unbelievable! DEPA has a very high turnover with there teachers. 2010 school year 95% of their teachers either quit or got fired. The administration replaced these teachers with whomever was available to teach. Before the 1st reportcard came out, my son homebase teacher was replaced 3 different times, math teacher replaced 3 different times, writing teacher replaced 2 twice. It's a total mess at DEPSA. Planned on spending 4 hours at parent teachers conference, ands depending on which academy your child is in that still may not be enough time. I'm very disappeared with DEPSA, this is a very unorganized school!
I must agree with another parent who is disgusted at the high teacher turnover rate at DEPSA. It is very deplorable. They put a high emphasis on reading but the other subjects they place a lower amount of emphasis. Science, math and language are just as important as reading. This is not the same school that it was when they won the Blue Ribbon. Mr. Bland who is the superintendent is very knowledgable and personable I can't say the same for the rest of the administration. This may be my kids last year there.
I'm in the 8th grade and I have been going to DEPSA for all my life. DEPSA is a family and I teared up when I had to take my High School Placement Test because I knew I was officially leaving DEPSA. I got accepted to Renaissance High School with their help. DEPSA is the way, and I am sure I will continue to visit them. DEPSA is surely a 10.! `Love you Mr. Bland, Joyia
