My son has been attending Gesu School since preschool. He is an honor student and has scored very high on his yearly standardized Iowa achievement tests. This past school year, he scored in the 80th and 90th percentiles for almost every subject. I am very pleased with the academic programs provided at the school and see that the principal and staff are currently working on 'upping' the standards even more with new textbook series and a standards based curriculum program for all the classrooms. My son has been fortunate to have been exposed to the Spanish and Italian languages for the last few years as well as a wonderful computer program which has him making power point presentations and he's not even 10 years old! He knows more about computers than we do! I am pleased to note that parental involvement at the school is extensive. the school has a real 'family' atmosphere.
The quality of academic programs at Gesu is poor to say the least. All of the students appear to perform above bar but that is because the bar is set at a casket level. Gesu is concerned with money not quality. The tuition increases every year and the quality of education decreases. Yes I was happy to see my children recieve outstanding report cards. However, upon closer examination I discovered that they were being given work which was way below there level. Hence all students end up being high achievers. I don't want the appearance of a high achiever I want a high achiever. Invest your money elsewhere this school is only a show. Go with a quality education that your child will be able to utilize in the real world when they aren't being stroked. Parent involvement is moderate and extracurricular activities are as well.
My daughter will be entering second grade in the fall and has grown so much since kindergarten. The two teachers our family has encoutered have been wonderful and consistent with the students. Gesu is very family-oriented and small enough that the children all know each other and act as a family. The new curriculum is proving to be outstanding. Above all, the school is SAFE! There are extra-curricular activities that all grades can get involved in. Overall my short journey has been great and I am the proud parent of a first honor student who is eager to learn and go to school everyday. Parent involvement is a requirement if you want your child to succeed and the school expects 100% cooperation with this endeavor. I recommend going to an open house to find out more or calling the school to stop in for a visit.
Very high teacher turnover. Several of the teachers do not have strong control or good classroom management skills.
