Profile Completeness

ADVANCED

Want to improve this school’s profile? You can!

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a parent or community member, you can share what you know with other families by writing a review or answering a few questions about what the school offers. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.

The philosophy of learning and teacher/student ratios really make CMCS an attractive school for our family. Students are engaged in a holistic learning process, not simply given information and facts to memorize. Learning is viewed as an interconnected part of living on this earth, and students begin to understand the bigger picture, not just the classroom. They are encouraged to investigate learning as a system of relationships: our relationship to God, to each other, and to the world. This seems to be one of the major components missing in much of our education systems, and it is refreshing to see a different approach. My son has benefited from great teaching there, and I've appreciated that he is not simply a number in the system. His teacher has been able to accelerate his learning process by recognizing his particular strengths and weakness, and appropriately helping him to grow in both areas. We have been very pleased with his growth there, and highly recommend the school to other parents.

Charlotte Mason Community School is a beautiful place for children to learn. The curriculum is rich and diverse. Students study artists and capture what they learn through their own reproductions. They listen to composers and learn to differentiate the different musical styles. They work at handcrafts, go outdoors for nature study, play music, sing and make art. They start learning Spanish in kindergarten and add to their fluency yearly. The students learn history through living books, first person accounts with one voice, both non and historical fiction, science with hands on activities and journaling, and literature through well written stories that spark the mind, question the character and grow the imagination. Charlotte Mason teachers and staff are dedicated and determined to make a positive difference in the lives of their students. The small classroom sizes make this possible. Children receive one on one attention that allows them to be heard, to feel seen and to be held accountable in their growing responsibilities. Charlotte Mason has been a safe, welcoming, and enriching experience for our family for many years!

Where can children be nurtured, challenged, and exposed to a diverse liberal arts education in the city of Detroit? CMCS provides all this. My children are encouraged to THINK for themselves, and to be people who care about others and the world around them. The Charlotte Mason philosophy is unique; and goes against conventional methods of rote memorization, and standards that cater to the lowest common denominator. I admire the twelve child classroom limit. I know that my children are allowed to excel in areas where they are strong, and given one on one help where they struggle.

April 07, 2014 I have 4 beautiful children who attend Charlotte Mason Community School in Detroit MI. I first heard about this school from my husband's sister. I home schooled all my children from a very young age, but was ready for a change. I needed support. I needed first, caring adults to spend time with my children. Secondly, I wanted what they would be learning to reflect our family's strong christian moral values. With these in place, I knew a good education would follow. After all who wants to learn with a bunch of hard to deal with kids and mean teachers. I have found, from 2 years of being with the Charlotte Mason Community School, dedication, personal friendship and great relationships between my children and the teachers and staff! I am proud have my children go to this school. They do so much with the children. Field Trips, Nature Study, Play time, structure in the class along with relaxed learning of the students is all a part of the package at our school. I am a happy mother with the transition of my family going to school instead of homeschooling. I have found my place as a great support and volunteer in our school:) - submitted by a parent

Charlotte Mason Community School is a beautiful environment where kids love to learn. With small class sizes and a curriculum that emphasizes student-motivated learning, children grow not only in their knowledge, but also in their character. As a liberal arts school with an emphasis on art, recreation and nature, this community is a great place for educating the whole child.

My nephew is entering 2nd grade at Charlotte Mason and his younger brother will be attending kindergarten in the fall. The school offers small class sizes with a focus on hands-on learning, emphasizing nature and outdoor exploration. It is my understanding that they do not evaluate students with standardized tests but rather the students are required to provide verbal responses to evaluation questions, which requires them to integrate and apply information instead of memorizing isolated bits of information. Families are required to volunteer a certain # of hours each school year so each family has a vested interest in the school and there is a strong sense of community among the families. They have recitals each year to highlight what the students have learned including vocal and instrumental music and recitation of poems and Scripture. They operate from a Biblical world-view, which is infused into all aspects of their school. I would highly recommend Charlotte Mason Community School in Detroit for anyone interested in providing their child with a solid academic and spiritual foundation!

Ambleside School is like no other that I know. The children at Ambleside not only learn, they actually seem to enjoy it! The school is very hands on, learning through experience and multiple intelligences. No standardized tests, lots of time outside in nature, music and art, average of 3 field trips per month, children read great literature, teachers that really nurture - this school is FABULOUS!

There isn't a better elementary school in the city than this one! Because teaching is their calling and not just their job, the staff creates an atmosphere that is welcoming and engaging for all students. And the kids learn! As a classroom helper I get to see teaching at its' finest. My favorites are history and spanish songs. I (andmost of the other parents) love to learn right along with the kids. Another thing I love is that they provide outdoor recess twice a day. No other schools around, to my knowledge, even acknowledge the need of children for outdoor recess let alone provide it twice daily. And then, there is art, gym, handcrafts, composer study, etc., etc, etc.
