Teacher effectiveness: Somewhat effective
August 04, 2015
Teachers are large motivators, but teachers also disagree with the student code of conduct and cant seem to stand up for it.

Amount of homework: Too much
August 04, 2015
Some teachers give out assignments with 30-65+ questions, and expect the student to finish it all in one night and if a student does the teacher tells the student that they are given another day to finish it and keep doing the same thing until its actually the due date to turn it in.

Develops grit: Agree
August 04, 2015
Students push each other to do better. And achieve their goals in the process of learning. Students are very intelligent and are willing to learn.

Develops respect: Disagree
August 04, 2015
Most staff members are very strict, and some staff members talk to the students as if they were their very own children. Which that can be very overboard and uncomfortable for the student.

Develops empathy: Strongly disagree
August 04, 2015
Students are treated like slaves, they work very hard on test scores and at through out the school year students barely go on field trips. However they may go for walks around downtown but they can never be taken somewhere farther.

Develops honesty: Strongly disagree

This school does NOT develop honesty and fairness within the students. Students are treated in such a bad way. Students are stranded from doing anything. This school is so called supposed to be a Expeditionary Learning school when students are supposed to go "outside the school building and learn new things" This school isn't for everyone but if you child have bad behavior I recommend sending them to this school.

Students do not receive much freedom. Students are not given enough field trips. The Academic core values are pointless. The uniform policy is very strict and frustrating. Certain staff members are very disrespectful to the students. The school is a very depressing place. I do not recommend anyone enrolling their child into this school. Students have to tuck their shirts in regardless of sex. Students have to wear all black shoes. Students can only wear a fleece with a Uprep logo on it. Its really a lot going on with this school don't believe the hype.

My daughter has attended UPA for the past 3 years. She has had the pleasure of being taught by several quality teachers, that really care! Unfortunately, administration lacks compassion and often hurl insult the children.

High teacher turnover, inconsistencies in instruction, and numerous safety concerns. Ammunition found in school and student brought a gun on campus February 2015. Officials became aware of weapon March 9, 2015, one month later. Students/Parents are often treated as insignificant. School officials tout on schools success 10 years ago. No textbooks for STEM courses.

The staff are some of the best I've seen , the problem lays with when a teacher is absent. The pool of replacement teachers is wanting. One use's very profane language to the students and the school wishes to keep her on.

This school has excellent organization and leadership. Doug Ross works hard to offer the best middle school experience. The entire staff keeps the student first. Students acheive in a welcoming and supportive environment. Parents are treated with respect and are encouraged to get involved. The children have classes in art, music, foreign language and life skills. After school clubs and tutoring are availabe. I would recommend this school because they consider the whole child. I have had two grandaughters there. One is now in high school and the other is in the eighth grade.

I love this school. The best school I've ever been to. It doesn't let you off easy because thats what they do in college. I really do think this school will help me later on in college. I look forward to going to UPA for the next 6 years.

Profile Completeness

Want to improve this school's profile?

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a parent or community member, you can share what you know with other families by writing a review or answering a few questions about what the school offers. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.
