We are extremely happy with HFA: SCS and parents and just as important, our 7th grader is having a better school experience than she had in a private Montessori school. The teachers are responsive to emails and phone calls, make time to support our child during the day and after school as needed, and since she is 2 years ahead of her grade level in several areas, the school has arranged for her to be in 9th grade biology and participate in an online Carnegie 9th grade algebra course. Again she gets support for the acceleration during the day and after school, and the teachers keep me as a parent informed on her progress. The art studios are incredibly well stocked with both supplies and amazing art instructors who are themselves artists. Our students also loves the food and eats every day the lunch meets our no-beef diet. If you are looking for a great school for your child, be sure to check out HFA: SCS. It's amazing.

Please do not let the reviews below me sell you a false advertisement I was a student at this school and I know what really happens behind the scenes. Teachers were not as caring as they seemed the often gave us worksheet to do for the entire hour while they relaxed at there desk. Our principal was never on the school grounds or in her office meaning students could not voice their concerns about the school to her. While our school had some after school clubs we had no form of foreign language, computer class, music / acting classes not to mention a library. We were forced to take art and physical education every semester. Lunch was horrible all the kids( 6-8 grade) had to stand in a giant snake like line just to get our food. If you were unlucky enough to be toward the end of the line you only had 10 minutes to eat and was left with a very limited selection of food. Afterwards we had to report to our form which is like a homeroom. I disliked form because I felt it was a waste of a hour while in form we were suppose to talk about every day life and things that bothered us but once again we were giving a worksheet.

Another thing I didn't like was Stop Drop & Design we spent a week working on a project that we could use to improve the community in the end we never used the projects we worked so hard on and the kids never took it seriously they just did what they pleased for a week. One last thing the school has no source of transportation meaning kids have to get dropped off at the school the parking lot was so small only about 3 cars could get in at a time to drop off students and After school pick up was a disaster student were suppose to get picked up from the parking lot across the street but none of the parents listened and getting to the school seemed impossible because traffic was terrible with rush hour and over 300 hundred kids trying to get picked up. For the few parents that did follow directions they were faced with the fact that their child had been waiting in a parking lot with no supervision. Me and my Mother where very displeased with what this school had to offer and i would recommend you send your child elsewhere.

HFA:SCS is an academically challenging school with a wonderful array of after school programs and tutoring for children to participate in. The teaching staff are PHENOMENAL and caring, who challenge the students in every way. There's a tremendous amount of homework, however, and students must be ORGANIZED...this is where Parental Involvement is KEY! The teachers are very approachable and work together with parents to ensure student growth and success. The learning space is ideal for creativity and the projects that must be completed allow the children to think critically. Public speaking is encouraged through their presentations. A++ for that!! Down side is parent involvement is needed, especially after school, to monitor children (who can be rowdy at times). Pluses outweigh the downside.

Every child has every opportunity to learn and grow in this school. There is constant after school tutoring, the children learn through projects that at times involve the entire school, all of the field studies are very educational, there are school mentors, counselors of all sorts, accomodations for children with special needs who need special resources in order to learn well, peer mentoring and tutoring is available, learning labs are available for all children, and majority of the teachers and school staff always go that extra mile to help your child succeed in their school work as well as a person.

About the tests

In 2012-2013 Michigan used the Michigan Educational Assessment Program (MEAP) to test students in grades 3 through 8 in math, reading and writing; in grades 5 and 8 in science; and in grades 6 and 9 in social studies. The MEAP is a standards-based test, which measures how well students are mastering specific skills defined for each grade by the state of Michigan. The goal is for all students to score at or above the proficient level.

Beginning in the 2011-2012 school year, the Michigan State Board of Education implemented new definitions of what it means to be proficient on the MEAP test. The new standards for proficiency are higher than in previous years and the percent of students earning a proficient score is expected to be lower as a result of this change.

More from this school
  • As of 2/27/13, more than 70% of our first graduating class has been accepted to post-secondary learning including the College for Creative Studies, Grand Valley State Univ., Michigan State Univ., Univ. of Michigan-Flint , Univ. of Michigan-Dearborn and other out-of-state schools such as Kentucky State Univ. and Morehouse College, just to name a few. This success is due, in part, to the fact that 90% of our senior class families regularly participate in college and career related activities.
