My son made Honor Roll for the first time in high school. When he came from a middle school in DPS he felt he was behind and struggled in math and science. The teachers at this school worked with him and helped him catch up. He does science projects in class and after school in a club. Now he loves science. His grades continue to get better every semester.

My son really began to come into his own here. He transferred from a school in Mississippi where he was just shuffled around. UPSM High School has really embraced him. He has a better work ethic and he enjoys the challenge of his Junior classes. He says this is the best school he has ever attended.

The rigorous curriculum at UPSM HS is needed to ensure our students will be ready to handle the rigors of college academic work. A recent report by the Alliance for Excellent Education shows that one-third of students entering college need to take remedial or developmental courses, including classes in reading, English or math, covering material they should have learned in high school. At UPSM HS, we make sure this will NOT happen. For struggling students, we have tutoring in each subject, every week. We have math and literacy support staff. Our teachers make themselves available to students before school, during their lunch, and after school. Their level of dedication is irreproachable. Our high school belongs to the Michigan PTA organization (charter of the National PTA), and has to follow all of its policies and bylaws. Membership is offered to all parents for a nominal fee, and members have some privileges: making motions, voting, holding office, serving as chairmen of committees, etc. Regardless of membership in the PTSA, ALL parents are encouraged and supported to express their opinion freely. Parent and student voices are very important to us!

The program is rigorous, but the staff never makes sure that the student understands the basic concepts of math, science, etc. before throwing them in these advanced classes. Also, was disappointed to learn that a parent has to pay to be in the PTA or their opinions will not be acknowledged.

UPSM is a great school but it lacks teaching the basics, UPSM doesnt seem to encourage freedom, UPSM no doubt is a good school but it just lacks the proper potential, students are stressed out witch can hinder students from really learning.

About the tests

In 2012-2013 Michigan used the Michigan Educational Assessment Program (MEAP) to test students in grades 3 through 8 in math, reading and writing; in grades 5 and 8 in science; and in grades 6 and 9 in social studies. The MEAP is a standards-based test, which measures how well students are mastering specific skills defined for each grade by the state of Michigan. The goal is for all students to score at or above the proficient level.

Beginning in the 2011-2012 school year, the Michigan State Board of Education implemented new definitions of what it means to be proficient on the MEAP test. The new standards for proficiency are higher than in previous years and the percent of students earning a proficient score is expected to be lower as a result of this change.
