things aren't going so well in East Jordan. The school board hasn't settled a contract with its teachers for 2 years, and the morale of a group of wonderful teachers is suffering. At school board meetings, the board continues to "talk down" to the community members and ignore their concerns, saying the negotiations are "too complicated" to share with the concerned members of the community. They are not requiring the superintendent to do her job negotiating this contract, instead paying thousands of dollars to an attorney to do it in her stead. She serves as a "hostess" to the board during negotiations instead. I believe students and teachers and support staff are all suffering because of the school board and the administration. This was a school I had children in for 25 years, and was always so proud of. I'm not so proud anymore.
Overall a B- rating. Some great teachers, some that should have pursued other careers (some coasting and really not passionate about teaching, thanks to a lousy union protecting the latter). The MST program is built up to be something it isn't. (No one can define what math, science, or technology is offered.......Calculus? Physics? Life Science?) Our kids are going on to college prepared though, mostly because a few great teachers and constant parental involvement.
Two children have benefited from great curriculum and challenging classes, the MST Center has helped prepare them for college. Great parent involvement. Excellent co-curriculum including one of the best drama and music programs in the area. Job shadowing and mentoring programs have also been beneficial.
'Zero-tolerance' policy not enforced as true zero-tolerance. Poor example set by administration when parents are allowed to talk their child out of punishment. Sports programs, mediocre at best due to lack of recruiting experienced coaches. Many of the current coaching staff are too soft and allow/excuse disrespectful behavior. Too many 'yes' to superintendent people on school board and involved in school politics. While our children seem to enjoy attending school here, there is room for great improvement. The front put up is not the real story.
High academics are available for those who want them. The music program has improved 100% in recent years. Drama program in high school and middle school is excellent. Athletics are ok. There are lots of extra curriculars available, and athletes can participate in 2 sports in a season. There are lots of parents who spend many hours volunteering at this school. It's always a busy place! I had 7 children and half a dozen exchange students attend this school, and it's a good place for family-oriented people.
